47 - Sa'id ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Amr narrated to us from Abu Salamah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) woke up on the day he died in the most composed state he had been in during his illness. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, you have woken up today in a good condition, and today is the day of your daughter Khawlah. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) allowed him to enter, and he returned to his family. Then death suddenly overcame the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and people gathered in the mosque. Umar stood by the pulpit, warning and speaking, saying: Some men among the hypocrites are claiming that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) has died. By the One in whose hand is the life of Muhammad, he will surely come out, and he will cut off their hands and feet in retaliation. Then Abu Bakr came until he entered the house of Aisha when he heard the news, and people were dispersing until he entered the house of Aisha, and Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had uncovered his face. He then uncovered his face and fell upon him, kissing him. He said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you. Allah would not combine two deaths upon you, the death of this world and the death of the Hereafter. Then he went out and stood at the door, and said to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Be silent. But Umar refused. He said to him: Be silent. But he refused. Then he praised Allah and extolled Him - and he was one of the most eloquent of people - and said: O people, whoever used to worship Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), then Muhammad is dead. And whoever worships Allah, the One, without partner, then He is alive and does not die. And Abu Bakr recited: {And Muhammad is but a messenger; messengers have passed on before him. So if he were to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels? And whoever turns back on his heels will not harm Allah at all, and Allah will reward the grateful} (Surah Al-Imran 3:144). The people began to say: {And Muhammad is but a messenger; messengers have passed on before him} (Surah Al-Imran 3:144), receiving it from Abu Bakr. Umar said: I used to read this chapter, but I did not understand this in it until I heard it from the son of Abu Quhafa. Then an individual came to them and said: Indeed, Sa'd ibn Ubadah has taken his seat on a bed in the Saqifah of Banu Sa'ida, surrounded by people from his tribe. Abu Bakr said: Shall we not go to these and see what they have? So they set out, walking between Umar ibn al-Khattab and Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, until they reached the place of the oil stones in the market of the city. Al-Zuhri mentioned that two men from the Ansar, Uwaym ibn Sa'idah and Ma'n ibn 'Adi, met them and said: O companions of Muhammad, from the early emigrants, gather and settle your matter, for there is nothing good behind us. Al-Zuhri said: And it had been decreed for them by Allah, that I do not know, that one of them was among those of whom Allah, the Exalted, said: {In it are men who love to be purified, and Allah loves those who purify themselves} (Surah At-Tawbah 9:108). They used to perform ablution by using stones, meaning istijmar. The other, he said something about, but I do not know what it was. So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and those with him went until they came to the Saqifah of Banu Sa'ida, and there was Sa'd ibn Ubadah on a bed with people from his tribe. Habbab ibn al-Mundhir ibn al-Jamugh, the brother of Banu Salamah, said: I am the one who will not be scorched by my fire, nor will people sleep in my shade. We are the people of the circle and the people of the fortresses. From us, there will be a leader, and from you, there will be a leader. He went to speak, but Abu Bakr struck him in the chest and said: Be silent. He replied: I will not disobey you on two occasions in one day. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke, praising Allah and extolling Him, and then mentioning the Ansar and what they were worthy of in terms of precedence and virtue. He then said: I am the middle of the Arabs in terms of dwelling and the largest in terms of lineage. And the Arabs will not recognize this matter for anyone but us. No one is more deserving than us to be with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in relation to lineage. We are the leaders, and you are the ministers. Sa'd said: You have spoken the truth. Extend your hand so we can pledge allegiance to you. He extended his hand, and they pledged allegiance to him. The people crowded around to give their allegiance, and someone from the crowd said: Sa'd has been killed. Umar replied: May Allah kill him! Then Abu Bakr returned and sat on the pulpit, and the people pledged allegiance to him on Monday.
Ali and Zubair entered the house of Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Then Umar came and said: Bring yourselves out for the pledge of allegiance! By Allah, you will come out, or I will burn down the house around you. Zubair emerged, drawing his sword, and Ziyad ibn Labid al-Ansari from Banu Bayadah embraced him and struck him, and the sword fell from his hand. Ziyad took it and said: No, rather strike the stone. Muhammad ibn Amr narrated to me that Abu Amr ibn Himas from the Layth narrated to me that he witnessed that stone on which the sword was struck. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Leave them, for Allah will bring them. They will leave later and pledge allegiance to him. They said: No one was more deserving or more worthy of it than you, but we have known that Umar was intent on taking our matter from us. So the people pledged allegiance to him on Monday, and when the next morning came, he said: Where do you think we should bury him (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)? Someone from the crowd said: Let us bury him in his place of prayer where he used to pray. Others said: Bury him by the pulpit. One person said: Rather, let us bury him where Allah, the Exalted, took his soul. So they moved the mat, and a man was sent to the two diggers, one from the people of Mecca and one from the people of Medina. Then Abu Talhah came and dug for him a grave and a niche, while the people of Mecca were digging a grave, and the people of Medina were making a niche.
