- Suwayd ibn Sa'id and al-Hasan ibn Ottoman both said: Al-Walid ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Urwah, from Aisha (may she be pleased) that Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), sent a message to Abu Bakr (may he be pleased) asking him for her inheritance from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from what Allah had granted His Messenger. At that time, Fatimah was seeking the charity (sadaqah) of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that was in the city, and Fadak, and what remained of the fifth (khums) of Khaybar. Abu Bakr (may he be pleased) replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "We do not inherit what we leave behind; it is charity." The family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) only eat from this wealth, and I will not change anything of the charity of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from its state that it was in during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and I will act in it as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) did. So, Abu Bakr (may he be pleased) refused to give Fatimah (may she be pleased) anything from it, and Fatimah was upset with Abu Bakr (may he be pleased) over that and became angry with him, not speaking to him until she passed away. She lived for six months after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).
When she passed away, her husband Ali buried her at night and did not inform Abu Bakr, and Ali (may he be pleased) prayed over her.
