9774 - Abd al-Razzaq narrated from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Urwa, from Aisha, that Fatimah and al-Abbas came to Abu Bakr seeking their inheritance from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and they were then requesting his land in Fadak and his share in Khaybar. Abu Bakr said to them, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say, 'We do not inherit what we leave behind; it is charity. The family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) only eat from this wealth.' And by Allah, I will not leave something I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) doing, except that I will do it."
So, Fatimah boycotted him and did not speak to him about it until she died, and Ali buried her at night without informing Abu Bakr. Aisha said: Ali had a respected position among the people during Fatimah's life. When Fatimah died, the people's attitudes turned away from him, and they began to distance themselves. Fatimah lived for six months after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and then died. Ma'mar said: A man said to al-Zuhri, "Why did Ali not pledge allegiance for six months?" He replied, "Neither did anyone from Banu Hashim until Ali pledged allegiance." When Ali saw the people's attitudes turning away from him, he hastened to reconcile with Abu Bakr and sent word to Abu Bakr, saying, "Come to us, but do not bring anyone with you," as he disliked coming with Umar, knowing his severity. Umar said, "Do not go to them alone." Abu Bakr replied, "By Allah, I will go to them alone, and what can they do to me?" So Abu Bakr went and entered upon Ali, who had gathered Banu Hashim around him. Ali stood up, praised Allah, and eulogized Him as He deserved, and then said: "O Abu Bakr, the reason we did not pledge allegiance to you is not due to denial of your virtue or rivalry over good that Allah has bestowed upon you, but we see that we have a right in this matter that you have taken exclusively for yourselves." He then mentioned his kinship to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and their right, and continued to mention this until Abu Bakr wept. When Ali fell silent, Abu Bakr testified to the Oneness of Allah and praised Him and eulogized Him as He deserved. Then he said: "By Allah, the relatives of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) are more deserving of my maintaining ties with than my own relatives. By Allah, I have not held back in these matters that were between me and you from doing good. However, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say, 'We do not inherit what we leave behind; it is charity, and the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) only eat from this wealth.' And by Allah, I will not recall any action the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) took in this regard except that I will do it, if Allah wills." Then Ali said, "Your appointment is this evening for the pledge of allegiance." When Abu Bakr prayed the noon prayer, he turned to the people and excused Ali for some of the reasons he had mentioned. Then Ali stood up, magnified Abu Bakr's (may Allah be pleased with him) right and virtue, and his precedence in Islam, and then went to Abu Bakr and pledged allegiance to him. The people began to approach Ali and said, "You have acted rightly and done well." Aisha said: They were closer to Ali when the matter became settled and recognized.
