Ibn Kathir - Al-Sira al-Nabawiyya - Chapter on Clarifying that he, peace be upon him, said: "We do not inherit"

- .... And thus, Imam Ahmad narrated it from Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, then Ahmad narrated it from Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Salih ibn Kaysan, from al-Zuhri, from Urwa, from Aisha: that Fatima asked Abu Bakr after the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) about her inheritance from what he left behind of what Allah had bestowed upon him. Abu Bakr said to her, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, 'We do not inherit; what we leave behind is charity.'"
So Fatima became angry and forsook Abu Bakr, and she continued to forsake him until she passed away. He said Fatima lived for six months after the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he mentioned the rest of the hadith. Thus, Imam Ahmad said. Al-Bukhari also narrated this hadith in the Book of Maghazi from his Sahih, from Ibn Bukayr, from al-Layth, fromuqayl, from al-Zuhri, from Urwa, from Aisha, as mentioned earlier, and he added: "When she died, he buried her at night and did not inform Abu Bakr, and he prayed over her. Ali had a favorable standing among the people during Fatima's life. But when she died, this was perceived as a change in the people's expressions, so he sought to reconcile with Abu Bakr and pledge allegiance to him, although he had not pledged allegiance during those months." He sent a message to Abu Bakr: "Come to us, and let no one come with you," for he disliked the idea of Umar accompanying him, knowing Umar's severity. Umar said, "By Allah, you will not go in alone to see them." Abu Bakr replied, "What can they do to me? By Allah, I will go to them…"
