- Ali's (peace be upon him) defense of the offspring of Prophethood: So Ali (peace be upon him) sprang up, seized him by the collar, then shook him and threw him to the ground, striking his nose and neck. He intended to kill him but remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and what he had instructed him to do. He said: "By the One who honored Muhammad with prophethood - you son of a temperamental woman - if it were not for a decree from Allah that had preceded and a command entrusted to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), I would know that you would not enter my house. Abu Bakr will soon return, issuing orders to burn the house again." So he sent Umar to seek help, and the people came until they entered the courtyard, and Ali (peace be upon him) rose to his sword. Then Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr, fearful that Ali (peace be upon him) would come out to him with his sword, due to what he had known of his strength and severity. Abu Bakr said to Qunfudh: "Go back, for if he comes out, do nothing, but if not, storm into his house. If he resists, set their house on fire." So the accursed Qunfudh went and stormed in with his companions without permission. Ali (peace be upon him) rose to his sword, but they overtook him and overwhelmed him, though he was many. Some took their swords and engaged him, restraining him, and they threw a rope around his neck.....

- Then the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: O Khalid, what did he command you with? He replied: He commanded me to strike your neck. Ali (peace be upon him) said: Would you have done it? He said: By God, yes! Had he not told me: Do not kill him before the submission, I would have killed you. Ali (peace be upon him) then took hold of him and slammed him to the ground, and the people gathered around him. Umar said: He will kill him, by the Lord of the Kaaba! The people said: O Abu Hasan, take heed, for the sake of the one in the grave. So he released him, then turned to Umar, grabbed him by the collar, and said: O son of a worthless woman, by God, if it were not for a promise from the Messenger of Allah and a decree from Allah that had come before, you would know whose supporters are weaker and whose numbers are fewer.

- Umar said: "Go, for you have permission now, or else enter without permission." So they went to seek permission, and Fatimah (peace be upon her) said: "Is it difficult for you to enter my house without permission?" They returned, and the accursed Qunfudh remained, saying: "Fatimah said such and such, and we felt it was inappropriate to enter her house without permission." Umar became angry and said: "What do we have to do with women?" Then he commanded some people around him to gather firewood, and they collected firewood, with Umar carrying some along as well, and they placed it around the house of Ali (peace be upon him), where Ali, Fatimah, and their two sons (peace be upon them) were. Then Umar called out to make sure Ali and Fatimah could hear: "By God, you, Ali, will come out and pledge allegiance to the successor of the Messenger of Allah, or I will set your house on fire!" Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood and said: "O Umar, what do we have to do with you?" He replied: "Open the door, or we will burn down your house!" She said: "O Umar, do you not fear God, to enter my house?" But he refused to leave and Umar called for fire, setting it ablaze at the door before pushing it open. Fatimah (peace be upon her) confronted him, crying out: "O my father! O Messenger of Allah!" Umar raised his sword, still in its sheath, and jabbed it into her side. She screamed, "O my father!" He raised the whip and struck her arm with it, and she called out: "O Messenger of Allah, how vilely you are being replaced by Abu Bakr and Umar!" Then Ali (peace be upon him) leapt up, seized his collar, and threw him to the ground, striking his nose and neck, and was about to kill him. But he remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and what he had instructed him. He said: "By the One who honored Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) with prophethood, you son of a difficult birth, if it were not for a decree from Allah that had already been sent and a promise made to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), you would know that you cannot enter my house." Umar sent Qunfudh for help, and people came until they entered the house. Ali (peace be upon him) rushed to his sword, and Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr, fearing that Ali (peace be upon him) would come out with his sword, given what he knew of his strength and fierceness. Abu Bakr said to Qunfudh: "Go back, and if he comes out, confront him in his house. If he resists, set fire to their house." So the accursed Qunfudh went and, along with his companions, entered without permission, and Ali (peace be upon him) rushed to his sword, but they reached it before him and overwhelmed him. They grabbed some of their swords and surrounded him, throwing a rope around his neck, while Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood at the door of the house, defending him, and Qunfudh the accursed struck her with the whip ....

- He said: So Abu Bakr and Umar returned to their homes, and Abu Bakr sent for Umar and then summoned him, saying: "Did you not see Ali's (peace be upon him) gathering today? By God, if he were to sit in a position like that again, he would surely ruin our affair. What is your opinion?" Umar said: "The opinion is that we order his death." Abu Bakr replied: "And who will kill him?" Umar said: "Khalid ibn al-Walid." So they both sent for Khalid, and he came to them. They said to him: "We want to place you in charge of a grave matter." Khalid replied: "Place me in charge of whatever you wish, even if it is to kill Ali ibn Abi Talib." They said: "That is it." Khalid asked: "When shall I kill him?" Abu Bakr said: "Be present in the mosque and stand beside him during the prayer. When he finishes, rise up and strike his neck." Khalid replied: "Yes." Then Asma' bint Umays, who was the wife of Abu Bakr, overheard this and said to her maid: "Go to the home of Ali and Fatimah (peace be upon them) and give them my greetings. Tell Ali: ['The prominent ones are conspiring to kill you, so go out. I am one of those who sincerely advise you.'] "The maid went to them and said to Ali: "Asma' bint Umays sends her greetings to you and says: ['The prominent ones are conspiring to kill you, so go out. I am one of those who sincerely advise you.']" The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: "Tell her that Allah will prevent them from what they desire." Then he stood, prepared for prayer, attended the mosque, and prayed for himself behind Abu Bakr, with Khalid ibn al-Walid standing beside him, sword in hand. When Abu Bakr sat for the testimony of faith, he regretted what he had said, feared the fitnah (trial), and recognized Ali's strength and fierceness. He remained deep in thought, not daring to give the salutation of peace, until the people thought he was distracted. Then he turned to Khalid and said: "O Khalid, do not do what I commanded you." Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings." The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: "O Khalid, what did he command you?" Khalid replied: "He ordered me to strike your neck." Ali asked: "Would you have done it?" Khalid said: "Yes, by God! If he had not told me, 'Do not do it before the salutation,' I would have killed you." Ali then took hold of Khalid and threw him to the ground, and the people gathered around him. Umar said: "He will kill him, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!" The people responded: "O Abu Hasan, take care, take care, for the sake of the one in the grave!" So he released him and then turned to Umar, grabbing him by the collar, saying: "O son of a deaf woman! By God, if it were not for a promise from the Messenger of Allah and a written decree from Allah that preceded, I would know which of us is weaker in support and fewer in number." Then he entered his home.

- .... And my words to Ali, peace be upon him: (Indeed, the leaders are conspiring against you to kill you, so go out; I am indeed one of the sincere advisers to you.) Then the maiden came to them and said to Ali, peace be upon him: "Indeed, Asma' bint Umais sends her greetings to you both and says to you: (Indeed, the leaders are conspiring against you to kill you, so go out; I am indeed one of the sincere advisers to you.)" Ali, peace be upon him, replied: "Indeed, Allah will place a barrier between them and what they desire." Then he stood up, prepared for prayer, and went to the mosque, standing behind Abu Bakr. He prayed for himself while Khalid ibn al-Walid was beside him, wielding a sword. When Abu Bakr sat in the tashahhud, he regretted what he had said and feared the tumult and the strength of Ali, peace be upon him, and his fierceness. He continued to think, not daring to greet him in peace, until the people thought he had forgotten. Then he turned to Khalid and said: "O Khalid, do not do what I commanded you, and peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings." The Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, said: "O Khalid, what was it that he commanded you?" Khalid replied: "He commanded me to strike your neck." Ali asked: "Would you have done it?" Khalid replied: "Yes, by Allah! Had he not told me: 'Do not do it,' I would have killed you after the salutation." Ali then took hold of him and struck him to the ground, and the people gathered around him. Umar said: "Kill him now, by the Lord of the Kaaba!" The people said: "O Abu al-Hasan, take care, for the sake of the one in this grave, and leave him be." Umar then turned to Khalid, grasped his collar, and said: "O son of a she-cat, were it not for a promise from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and a written decree from Allah, the Exalted, that preceded, I would have known which of us is weaker in support and fewer in number."

- So, I heard this from Asma bint Umeis, who was married to Abu Bakr. She said to her maid: "Go to the house of Ali and Fatimah (peace be upon them) and give them my salutations, and tell Ali (peace be upon him): ‘Indeed, the assembly is conspiring against you to kill you, so go out; I am indeed one of the sincere advisors to you.’" So, the maid went and did as she was commanded. Ali, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), said: "Tell her that Allah will put a barrier between them and what they desire, and who will kill the renegades, the oppressors, and the transgressors?" Then he stood up, prepared for prayer, went to the mosque, and prayed for himself behind Abu Bakr. Khalid ibn al-Walid - may Allah curse him - was praying beside him, with a sword in hand. When Abu Bakr sat in the state of tashahhud, he regretted what he had said, feared fitnah (tribulation), and recognized Ali's (peace be upon him) severity and strength. He remained deep in thought, not daring to greet him with peace, until the people thought he had forgotten, and the sun was about to rise. Then he turned to Khalid and said: "O Khalid, do not do what I commanded you." - three times - or he said: "Khalid will do what I commanded him." Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings. Then Ali (peace be upon him) turned and saw Khalid clutching the sword beside him, and Ali (peace be upon him) said: "O Khalid, what is it that you were commanded?" Khalid replied: "He commanded me to strike your neck." Ali (peace be upon him) asked: "Would you have done it?" Khalid said: "Yes, by Allah! If he had not told me not to do it before the prayer, I would have killed you." Then Ali (peace be upon him) said: "You lie! Your mother is one who would do it. Is there a tighter circle than this around you?" Khalid replied: "Then Ali (peace be upon him) took him and slammed him to the ground." - In another narration: So he took him by the ends of his garment and struck him against the wall, then grabbed his throat with his index and middle fingers, squeezing and pinching him onto a pillar of the mosque. Khalid let out a terrible scream, and the people were frightened, thinking of their own safety. Khalid began to flail his legs and did not speak, and Abu Bakr said to Umar: "This is your misguided counsel. I feel as if I were looking at this, and I thank Allah for our safety." Whenever someone approached to rescue Khalid from Ali's (peace be upon him) grasp, he would momentarily step back, and Abu Bakr sent Umar to Abbas. Abbas came, interceded with him, and swore an oath to him, saying: "By the one in the grave and those in it, and by his two sons and their mother, you must leave him alone." So, Ali (peace be upon him) did that and Abbas kissed his hands.

In some narrations:
It is mentioned that when Ali (peace be upon him) seized Khalid's throat and pinched him, people gathered around him, and Umar said: "He will kill him, by the Lord of the Kaaba!" The people said: "O Abu al-Hasan, be mindful of Allah for the sake of the one in the grave." So, he released him and then turned to Umar, taking him by the collar and saying: "O son of a cursed one, by Allah! If it were not for a promise from the Messenger of Allah and a written command from Allah that preceded, I would know which of us is weaker in support and fewer in number." Then he went into his house. This incident is one of the well-known events accepted among both the special and general communities, although some opposing figures from the ummah have denied it.

- And in the narration of Misbah al-Anwar, it is mentioned that she (peace be upon her) said to Ali after that: "I have a need from you, O Abu al-Hasan." He replied, "It will be fulfilled, O daughter of the Messenger of Allah." She said, "I beseech you by Allah and by the truth of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), that Abu Bakr and Umar do not pray over me, for I will keep from you a matter." Then she continued: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to me, 'O Fatimah, you are the first of my family to join me.' I would hate to distress you." He said: "So when she passed away, Abu Bakr and Umar came to him and said, 'Would it not be better to bring her out so that we can pray over her?' He replied, 'I see us only as she said. We will see her in the morning.' Then he buried her at night and shaped seven graves around her with his foot." He said: "When they awoke, they went to him and said, 'O Abu al-Hasan, what made you bury the daughter of the Messenger of Allah without us being present?' He (peace be upon him) replied, 'That was her farewell to me.'" Then Abu Bakr fell silent. Umar said, "By Allah, this is something in your heart," and he moved toward Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him). He grasped him by the collar and then pulled him, but he relaxed in his hand and said, 'By Allah, if it were not for a decree from Allah that had already passed and a word from Allah, I would swear that you were afraid on the day of Khaybar and in other situations. Then Allah would not have sent down a repentance for you until now.'" Abu Bakr took hold of Umar and pulled him, saying, "I warned you against it."
- And in the narration of al-Ikhtisas from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), it is mentioned that when her death was near, she called Ali (peace be upon him) and said, "Will you not guarantee me the will, or should I entrust it to Ibn al-Zubair?" Ali (peace be upon him) replied, "I will guarantee your will, O daughter of Muhammad." She said, "I ask you by the right of the Messenger of Allah that when I die, you do not let anyone witness my funeral or pray over me." He said, "That is your wish." So when she (peace be upon her) passed away, Ali (peace be upon him) buried her at night in her house, and in the morning, the people of the city intended to attend her funeral, as did Abu Bakr and Umar. Ali (peace be upon him) went out to them, and they said: "What did you do with the daughter of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)? Have you begun her preparations, O Abu al-Hasan?" Ali (peace be upon him) replied, "By Allah, I have buried her." They said, "What made you bury her without informing us of her death?" He said, "She commanded me." Umar said, "By Allah, I intended to exhume her and pray over her." Ali (peace be upon him) replied, "I swear, as long as my heart is within my chest and Dhul-Fiqar is in my hand, you will not be able to reach exhuming her." You know best." Abu Bakr said, "Go, for he is more deserving of her than we are," and the people dispersed.

- I heard Asma bint Umays, who was married to Abu Bakr, say to her maid: "Go to Ali's (peace be upon him) house, give him my regards, and say: 'The leaders are conspiring against you to kill you, so come out. I am one of those who advise you sincerely.'" So she went, and Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said to her: "Tell her: (Indeed, Allah will prevent them from achieving what they desire)." Then he (peace be upon him) stood up, prepared for prayer, and went to the mosque, where he found Khalid ibn al-Walid praying beside him with a sword. When Abu Bakr sat down for the Tashahhud, he regretted what he had said, remembered Ali's (peace be upon him) intensity and strength, and feared fitnah. It crossed his mind that the Banu Hashim would kill him if he killed Ali (peace be upon him). He remained lost in thought, unable to bring himself to greet him, until the people thought he was distracted. He could not control himself, but turned and said: 'O Khalid, do not do what I commanded you, and peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings.' Then Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) said: 'O Khalid, what did your companion order you to do?'" Khalid replied, "He ordered me to strike your neck." Ali (peace be upon him) responded, "Would you have done it?" Khalid said, "O yes, by Allah! He told me not to do it before the greeting, or I would kill you." So Ali (peace be upon him) seized him and threw him to the ground, and the people gathered around him. Umar said, "He is going to kill him, by the Lord of the Ka'bah!" The people said, "O Allah, O Allah! Abu Hasan, by the right of the owner of this grave, leave him alone." So he released him, and Khalid fled from before him, saying, "I will kill you, if Allah wills!" Then he turned to Umar, grabbed him by the collar, and shook him, saying: "O son of a sod, by Allah! If it were not for the promise of the Messenger of Allah and a written decree from Allah, I would know which of us is weaker in support and fewer in number." Then he went home.
- And in another narration:
it is mentioned that he (peace be upon him) reached for Khalid's neck and began to choke him with his finger, so that his eyes nearly bulged out, and he squeezed him tightly. Khalid let out a dreadful scream, and the people were alarmed, fearing for themselves. Khalid then defiled his clothes and began to stomp his feet on the ground, unable to speak. Abu Bakr said to Umar, "This is your misguided counsel. It is as if I could see this happening." And he praised Allah for their safety. Whenever someone approached to free him from Ali's (peace be upon him) grasp, Ali would give them a warning glance, and they would step back. So Umar went to Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, who came and swore an oath to him. Then he began to watch for an opportunity or surprise, hoping to kill Ali (peace be upon him) in a treacherous manner. Later, Abu Bakr sent Khalid with an army to a location. When they left the city, Khalid was armed, and people were with him who had been instructed to do as he wished. Khalid saw Ali (peace be upon him) coming from a garden, alone and unarmed, and considered it a chance. He charged at Ali (peace be upon him), and when he was close, he raised a heavy iron rod that he had with him to strike Ali (peace be upon him) on the head. However, Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) confronted him, seized the rod from his hand, placed it around his neck, and twisted it like a necklace. Khalid returned to Abu Bakr, and the group plotted to break the rod, but they could not. They brought a number of blacksmiths who said, "It cannot be removed unless it is placed in fire, and in it is your destruction." Umar said, "Ali will be the one to free it." They interceded with Ali (peace be upon him), and he took the rod, disentangled some parts with his finger, and showed them a miracle of Dawud (peace be upon him). I say: The story of him placing a collar around Khalid ibn al-Walid's neck is also mentioned in Rashad al-Daylami's book, may Allah have mercy on him.

He ignited it at the door [and burned the door] and then pushed it, entering. Fatimah (peace be upon her) met him and cried out: O my father! O Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)! Umar raised the whip, still in its sheath, and struck her side with it. She screamed: O my father! He raised the whip and struck her arm with it, and she called out: O Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), how vilely Abu Bakr and Umar have left you! Then Ali (peace be upon him) jumped up, grabbed him by the collar, and shook him, throwing him to the ground, striking his nose and neck, and he was about to kill him, but he remembered the words of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and what he had commanded him. (Until he said) And Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood between them and him at the door of the house, and the accursed Qunfudh struck her with the whip, and she died when she died, and there was something like a bracelet on her arm. Umar [and Abu Bakr] sent word to him that if Fatimah was between you and him, to strike her, so Qunfudh cornered her to a doorpost and pushed her, breaking a rib from her side, causing her to miscarry a fetus in her womb.

- Umar said to Abu Bakr: "What prevents you from sending for him so he can pledge allegiance? There is no one left who has not already pledged allegiance to someone else, except for these four." Abu Bakr was the more gentle and accommodating of the two men, the more modest and the less deep-reaching, while the other was the harsher, more rigid, and more abrasive. Abu Bakr replied: "Who shall we send to him?" Umar said: "We will send Qunfudh to him. He is a coarse, heavy-handed man from the former tribes, one of the Banu Adi ibn Ka'b." So he sent him to Ali and also sent aides with him. Qunfudh went and sought permission to enter Ali's house, but Ali refused to grant it. Qunfudh's companions returned to Abu Bakr and Umar, who were sitting in the mosque with people around them, and they said: "We were not allowed to enter." Umar replied: "Go back, for he will either grant you permission, or you can enter without it." So they went to seek permission again, and Fatimah (peace be upon her) said: "Is it not embarrassing for you to enter my house without permission?" They returned, and Qunfudh remained, saying: "Fatimah said this and that, and we found it embarrassing to enter her house without permission." Umar was angry and said: "What do we have to do with women?" Then he ordered some people around him to gather firewood, and they did so, with Umar carrying wood as well. They piled the firewood around Ali and Fatimah's home. Then Umar called out, so that Ali and Fatimah could hear: "By God, you will come out, Ali, and you will pledge allegiance to the Khalifah of the Messenger of God, or I will set your house on fire!" Fatimah said: "O Umar, what is it to you and to us?" He replied: "Open the door, or I will burn your house!" She said: "O Umar, do you not fear God, to enter my house?" But he refused to leave and Umar called for fire. He set the fire ablaze at the door and pushed it, forcing his way in. Fatimah confronted him and cried out: "O my father, O Messenger of God!" Umar raised his sword, still in its sheath, and struck it against her side. She screamed: "O my father!" He raised his whip and struck her arm with it. She cried out: "O Messenger of God, how vilely you are being succeeded by Abu Bakr and Umar!" Then Ali jumped up, seized Umar by the collar, yanked him, and threw him to the ground, crushing his nose and neck, and was about to kill him when he remembered the words of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and what he had instructed him. He said: "By the One who honored Muhammad with prophethood, you son of a worthless woman, if it were not for a decree from God that has already been established and a promise made to the Messenger of God, I would know that you will not enter my house." And Umar sent for help. People came until they entered the house, and Ali sprang to his sword, while Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr, fearing that Ali would come out to him with his sword, knowing well his might and severity.

- Umar said to Abu Bakr: "What is preventing you from sending someone to him so he can pledge allegiance? There is no one left who has not pledged allegiance except him and these four." Abu Bakr was the more gentle and accommodating of the two men, the more inclined to call them, and the one further removed from harshness, while the other was the more severe, rough, and abrasive. Abu Bakr replied to him, "Whom shall we send?" Umar said, "Send Qunfudh; he is a harsh, coarse, and austere man from the former tribes, one of the Banu Adi ibn Ka'b." So he sent him and also sent helpers along. Qunfudh went and sought permission to see Ali (peace be upon him), but he refused to grant them permission. The companions of Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr and Umar, who were sitting in the mosque with people around them, and said, "He did not allow us to enter." Umar replied, "Go back; if he permits you, then fine, otherwise enter without permission." So they went and sought permission again. Fatimah (peace be upon her) said, "I find it troubling that you enter my home without permission." They returned, and Qunfudh the cursed remained. They said, "Fatimah said this and that, and we left because we feared to enter her house without permission." Umar became angry and said, "What is it with us and women?" Then he ordered some people around him to gather firewood. They collected the wood, and Umar carried it with them, placing it around the house of Ali and Fatimah and their children (peace be upon them). Then Umar called out to make sure Ali and Fatimah could hear, "By God, you will come out, O Ali, and you will pledge allegiance to the Khalifah of the Messenger of God, or I will set your home on fire!" Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood and said, "O Umar, what is it between you and us?" He replied, "Either open the door, or we will burn your house down." She said, ‹Page 98› "O Umar, do you not fear God entering my home?" But he refused to leave and called for fire. Umar set fire to the door and then raised it to enter. Fatimah (peace be upon her) confronted him and cried out, "O my father, O Messenger of God!" Umar raised his sword while it was still in its sheath and struck it against her side, and she screamed, "O my father!" He raised the whip and struck her arm with it. She called out, "O Messenger of God, wicked is what Abu Bakr and Umar have left behind!" Ali jumped up and grabbed Umar by his collar, throwing him to the ground, and struck his nose and neck, preparing to kill him. But he remembered the words of the Messenger of God and what he had instructed him. He said, "By the One who honored Muhammad with prophethood, O son of a slanderer, if it were not for a decree from God that had preceded and a promise made to the Messenger of God, you would know that you cannot enter my home." Umar sent for help.People came until they entered the house, and Ali (peace be upon him) sprang towards his sword, but Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr, fearing that Ali (peace be upon him) would come out with his sword, given what he knew of his might and intensity. Abu Bakr said to Qunfudh, "Go back. If he comes out, confront him in his home. If he resists, set fire to their house." So Qunfudh the cursed went back and, with his companions, entered without permission, and Ali sprang to his sword, but they reached it before him and overwhelmed him. They grabbed some of their swords, overwhelming him, and threw a rope around his neck, with Fatimah (peace be upon her) standing at the door of the house, trying to protect him. Qunfudh struck her, and she died at that moment. There was a mark on her arm like a bracelet from his blow. May God curse him. Then they took Ali (peace be upon him) away, it is said, until they brought him to Abu Bakr and Umar, who were standing with their swords raised over him, along with Khalid ibn al-Walid, Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, Salim, the freedman of Abu Hudhayfah, Mu'adh ibn Jabal, al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba, Usaid ibn Khudayr, Bashir ibn Sa'd....

- Abu Bakr said to him, "Who shall we send to him?" (Umar) replied, "We will send Qunfudh to him," and he is a rude, harsh, and austere man from the former idolaters, one of the Banu Adi ibn Ka'b. So he sent him (to Ali) and sent along some helpers. Qunfudh went and sought permission to enter (Ali's house). Ali (peace be upon him) refused to grant them permission, so the companions of Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr and Umar, who were sitting in the mosque with people around them, and said, "He did not permit us to enter." Umar replied, "Go away, for he will either permit you, or you may enter (his house) without permission." So they went and sought permission again. Fatimah (peace be upon her) said, "I find it regrettable that you wish to enter my house (without permission)." They returned, but Qunfudh (the cursed) stayed and said, "Fatimah said this and that, and we found it inappropriate to enter (her house) without permission." Umar became angry and said, "What do we have to do with women?" Then he ordered some people (around him) to gather firewood, and they gathered it, with Umar also carrying wood. They placed it around Ali's house, which contained Fatimah and Ali and their two sons (peace be upon them), and then Umar called out so that Ali and Fatimah (peace be upon them) could hear: "By Allah, you will come out (O Ali) and you will pledge allegiance to the Caliph of the Messenger of Allah, or I will set your house on fire!" (Fatimah, peace be upon her, said:) "O Umar, what is it to you?" He replied, "Open the door, or I will burn your house!" She said, "O Umar, do you not fear Allah, to enter my home?" But he refused to leave and Umar called for fire. He ignited it at the door and pushed it, then entered. Fatimah (peace be upon her) confronted him and cried out, "O my father, O Messenger of Allah!" Umar raised his sword - still in its sheath - and struck her side with it, and she screamed, "O my father!" He raised the whip and struck her arm with it. She cried out: "O Messenger of Allah, wretched is what Abu Bakr and Umar have left behind you!" Ali (peace be upon him) jumped up and grabbed him by his cloak, then jerked him and threw him to the ground, striking his nose and neck, and he was about to kill him when he remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and what he had advised him. He said, "By the One who honored Muhammad with prophecy, O son of a she-cat, if it were not for a decree from Allah that had been issued and a pledge He had entrusted to the Messenger of Allah, you would know that you cannot enter my house." Then Umar sent for help. People came until they filled the house, and Ali (peace be upon him) stood up to his sword, while Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr, fearing that Ali (peace be upon him) would come out to him with his sword, given what he knew of his strength and severity. Abu Bakr said to Qunfudh, "Go back, and if he comes out, or else you may enter his house. If he resists, set his house on fire." So Qunfudh (the cursed) went back and he and his companions entered without permission, and Ali (peace be upon him) seized his sword. They reached him before he could draw it (and overwhelmed him), for they were many. They took some of their swords and surrounded him (restraining him), throwing a rope around his neck, and Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood at the door of the house, shielding him. Qunfudh (the cursed) struck her with a whip (he had with him) on her arm, and she died, blessings of Allah be upon her, (when she died), and there was on her arm the size of a bracelet from his strike (may Allah curse him). Then they took Ali, dragging him along, until they brought him to Abu Bakr and Umar, who were standing at Abu Bakr's head with their swords drawn, along with Khalid ibn al-Walid, Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, Salim, the freedman of Abu Hudhayfah, Mu'adh ibn Jabal, al-Mughira ibn Shu'bah, Asid ibn Hudhayr, Bashir ibn Sa'd, and the rest of the people around Abu Bakr, all armed.

- So Umar said, "We will send to him a Qunfudh, for he is a rude and harsh man, one of the former polytheists, one of Banu Adi ibn Ka'b." So he sent him and sent with him helpers. He went and sought permission to enter upon Ali (peace be upon him), but Ali (peace be upon him) refused to grant them permission. The companions of Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr and Umar, who were sitting in the mosque with people around them, and said, "We were not given permission to enter." Umar said, "Go, for either he will permit you, or you may enter without permission." So they went and sought permission again. Fatimah (peace be upon her) said, "I find it inappropriate for you to enter my house without permission." They returned, and the cursed Qunfudh remained. They said, "Fatimah said such and such, so we found it inappropriate to enter her house without permission." Umar became angry and said, "What do we have to do with women?" Then he ordered some people around him to gather firewood. They gathered firewood and Umar carried wood with them, placing it around Ali's house, where Ali, Fatimah, and their two sons (peace be upon them) were. Then Umar called out loudly enough to make Ali and Fatimah (peace be upon them) hear: "By Allah, you, Ali, will come out and pledge allegiance to the Khalifah of the Messenger of Allah, or I will set fire to your house!" Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood up and said, "O Umar, what do we have to do with you?" He replied, "Open the door, or we will burn your house down!" She said, "O Umar, do you not fear Allah, to enter my house?" But he refused to leave and Umar called for fire. He set it ablaze at the door and pushed it, entering. Fatimah (peace be upon her) confronted him and cried out, "O my father, O Messenger of Allah!" Umar raised his sword, still in its sheath, and struck her side with it. She screamed, "O my father!" He raised the whip and struck her arm with it, and she called out, "O Messenger of Allah! Evil is what Abu Bakr and Umar have left behind you." Then Ali (peace be upon him) jumped up, grabbed Umar by his collar, and threw him to the ground, smashing his nose and neck, and was about to kill him. But he remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and what he had instructed him, so he said, "By the One who honored Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) with prophethood, O son of a falsehood, if it were not for a decree from Allah that had already been made and a covenant that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) entrusted to me, you would know that you cannot enter my house." And he sent Umar to seek help. People came until they entered the house, and Ali (peace be upon him) rushed to his sword. Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr, fearing that Ali (peace be upon him) would emerge with his sword, knowing what he had recognized of his strength and fierceness. Abu Bakr said to Qunfudh, "Return, for if he comes out, do not let it deter you. Instead, confront him in his home. If he resists, set fire to their house." So the cursed Qunfudh went and, without permission, barged in with his companions. Ali (peace be upon him) rushed to his sword, but they got to it before him and overwhelmed him, although they were many. They threw a rope around his neck and stood between him and Ali (peace be upon him), with Fatimah (peace be upon her) at the door of the house. Qunfudh, the cursed one, struck her with the whip, and she died at that moment, with a mark like a bracelet on her arm from his blow. May Allah curse him! Then they began to take Ali (peace be upon him) away, dragging him until they brought him to Abu Bakr and Umar, who were standing with a sword over his head, along with Khalid ibn al-Walid, Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, Salim, the freedman of Abu Hudhayfah, Muadh ibn Jabal, al-Mughira ibn Shu'bah, As'id ibn Hudhayr, Bashir ibn Sa'd, and the rest of the people around Abu Bakr, all armed.

- "I find it indelicate for you to enter my house without permission," he said, and they turned away. Qunfudh stood firm and said: "Indeed, Fatimah said such and such," so we found it indelicate to enter her house without permission. Umar became angry and said: "What do we have to do with women?" Then he ordered some people around him to gather firewood, and they carried the firewood, and Umar carried it with them. They placed it around Ali's (peace be upon him) home - and in it were Ali, Fatimah, and their two sons (peace be upon them) - then Umar called out - so that Ali and Fatimah could hear: "By God, you will come out, O Ali, and you will pledge allegiance to the successor of the Messenger of Allah, or I will set fire to your home." Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood up and said: "O Umar, what do we have to do with you?" He replied: "Open the door, or I will burn your house down." She said: "O Umar, do you not fear Allah, to enter my home?" But he refused to turn away and Umar called for fire. He ignited it at the door and pushed it, then entered. Fatimah (peace be upon her) confronted him and cried out: "O my father! O Messenger of Allah!" Umar raised his sword, still sheathed, and struck her side with it. She cried out: "O my father!" He raised the whip and struck her arm with it, and she called out: "O Messenger of Allah! Worst is what Abu Bakr and Umar have left behind you!" Ali (peace be upon him) jumped up, grabbed him by the collar, and threw him down, striking his nose and neck, and was about to kill him. Then he remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and what he had urged him to do, and said: "By the One who honored Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) with prophethood, O son of a worthless woman, if it were not for a decree from Allah that had already been decreed and a covenant entrusted to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), you would know that you cannot enter my home." Umar sent for help, and people came until they entered the house. Ali (peace be upon him) rose to his sword, and Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr, fearing that Ali (peace be upon him) would emerge with his sword - as he knew well his might and fierceness. Abu Bakr said to Qunfudh: "Return, for if he comes out, then attack him in his home. If he resists, set fire to their house." Qunfudh went and attacked, he and his companions, without permission, and Ali (peace be upon him) rose to his sword, but they reached it before him and overwhelmed him. They threw a rope around his neck and Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood at the door of the house, preventing them from him. Qunfudh struck her with the whip, and she died then and there. There was a mark on her arm like a bracelet from his blow. Then they took Ali (peace be upon him) captive, struggling, until they brought him to Abu Bakr and Umar, who were standing with swords over him, and Khalid ibn al-Walid, Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, Salim, the freedman of Abu Hudhayfah, Mu'adh ibn Jabal, al-Mughira ibn Shu'bah, Usayyid ibn Khudhayr, Bishir ibn Sa'd, and the rest of the people around Abu Bakr, all armed.

- So the companions of Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr and Umar - both of whom were (sitting) in the mosque with people gathered around them - and said: "We were not given permission to enter." Umar replied: "Go, for you will either be given permission, or else enter (upon him) without permission." So they set off to seek permission, but Fatimah (peace be upon her) said: "Is it not a shame for you to enter my home (without permission)?" They returned, and the accursed Qunfudh remained, saying: "Fatimah said such and such, and we felt it was inappropriate to enter her house without permission." Umar became angry and said: "What do we have to do with women?" Then he ordered some people around him to gather wood, and they collected wood, with Umar carrying it as well. They placed it around the house of Ali and Fatimah and their sons (peace be upon them). Then Umar called out in a voice loud enough for Ali and Fatimah (peace be upon them) to hear: "By God, you will come out, O Ali, and you will pledge allegiance to the Khalifah of the Messenger of God, or I will set your (house) on fire!" Fatimah (peace be upon her) said: "O Umar, what do we have to do with you?" He replied: "Open the door, or I will burn your house down!" She said: "O Umar, do you not fear God, to enter my home?" But he refused to leave. Umar called for fire and set it ablaze at the door, then pushed it open and entered. Fatimah (peace be upon her) confronted him, crying out: "O my father, O Messenger of God!" Umar raised his sword, still in its sheath, and thrust it into her side. She screamed: "O my father!" He then raised the whip and struck her arm with it, and she called out: "O Messenger of God, how vilely your successor, Abu Bakr and Umar, have acted!" Ali (peace be upon him) jumped up, grabbing him by the collar, then shook him and threw him to the ground, injuring his nose and neck, and was about to kill him. But then he remembered the words of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and what he had instructed him. He said: "By the One who honored Muhammad with prophethood - O son of a she-camel, had it not been for a prior decree from God and a covenant entrusted to him by the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), you would know that you cannot enter my house." Then Umar sent for help. People came until they entered the house, and Ali (peace be upon him) rose to his sword. Qunfudh returned to Abu Bakr, fearing that Ali (peace be upon him) would come out to him with his sword, due to what he knew of his strength and severity. Abu Bakr said to Qunfudh: "Return, for if he comes out, it will be better, or else storm into his home. If he resists, set their house on fire." So the accursed Qunfudh went and stormed in, he and his companions, without permission, until it is said: Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood at the door of the house, blocking them from him, and Qunfudh, the accursed, struck her with the whip, and she died at that moment. There was a mark on her arm like a bracelet from his strike, and the curse of God be upon him, until it is said: Then Ali (peace be upon him) was taken, struggling, until he was brought to Abu Bakr and Umar, standing with a sword over his head, surrounded by Khalid ibn al-Walid, Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, Salim, the freedman of Abu Hudhayfah, Mu'adh ibn Jabal, al-Mughira ibn Shu'bah, As'id ibn Hudhayn, Bishir ibn Sa'ad, and all the other people (sitting) around Abu Bakr, armed.
