- .... His statement: (When al-Hasan ibn Ali marched to Muawiya with the battalions): This was narrated by Sa'id ibn Mansur and al-Bayhaqi in al-Dala'il, through his chain and through another, with both of their chains to al-Shu'bi, who said: When al-Hasan ibn Ali made peace with Muawiya, Muawiya said to him: "Stand and speak." He stood, praised Allah, and extolled Him, and then said: "As for what follows, the most prudent of the prudent is piety, and the most powerless of the powerless is sinfulness. Know that this matter over which you see me and Muawiya differing is the right of one who was more deserving of it than me or a right that I abandoned for the sake of seeking to reform the Muslims and to preserve their blood." {And I do not know; perhaps it is a trial for you and a enjoyment for a time} (Surah al-Anbiya 21:111)}. Then he sought forgiveness and descended.

4866 - Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq and Ali ibn Hamshad said: Bishr ibn Musa narrated to us, al-Humaydi narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Mujald ibn Sa'id, from al-Shabi, who said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali addressed us at Nakhlah when he reconciled with Mu'awiya. He stood up, praised Allah, and extolled Him, and then said: "The wisest of the wise is the pious, and the most incapable of the incapable is wrongdoing. And this matter over which Mu'awiya and I have differed is true for a person, and he was more deserving of its truth than me or it was a truth for me that I left to Mu'awiya, intending to preserve the unity of the Muslims and protect their blood. {And I do not know; perhaps it is a trial for you and a provision for a time} (Surah al-Anbiya 21:111). I say this, and I seek forgiveness from Allah for myself and for you."

- .... Ibn Abi Adi from Ibn Awn from Anas ibn Sirin said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali said: "Between Jabalqa and Jabalcus is a man whose grandfather was a prophet, except for me and my brother. And I have seen it fitting to reconcile the الأمة (ummah) but I want you to know that we have already pledged allegiance to Mu'awiya, and I do not know, it may be a trial for you and a temporary provision until a time." Ibn Ma'mar said: "Jabalqa and Jabalcus are the East and the West." Hishim from Mujald from al-Shu'bi narrated that al-Hasan delivered a sermon and said: "The wisest of the wise is piety, and the most foolish of fools is debauchery. And indeed, these matters over which you and Mu'awiya have differed were left to Mu'awiya in the hope of reforming the Muslims and preserving their blood."

2559 - Abu Khalaifah narrated to us, he said: Ali ibn al-Madini narrated to us, he said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Mujalid, from al-Sha'bi, who said: I witnessed Al-Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon them) in al-Nakhliah when he made peace with Mu'awiyah (peace be upon him). Mu'awiyah said to him: "If this is the case, then stand up, speak, and tell the people that you have handed this matter over to me." Sufyan might have said: "Tell the people about this matter that you have left to me." So he stood up and addressed the people from the pulpit, praising Allah and extolling Him. Al-Sha'bi said: I heard him, and then he said: "However, the wisest of the wise is one who is conscious of Allah, and the most foolish of fools is one who is immoral. And this matter over which Mu'awiyah and I have differed—was it not a right that I could have claimed, which I left to Mu'awiyah in the interest of bringing about good for this Ummah and preserving their blood? Or could it be a right that belonged to someone more deserving than me, and I acted accordingly?" { "And I do not know, perhaps it is a trial for you and a temporary enjoyment" } (Surah al-Anbiya, 21:111).

Muawiya said: "Stand and tell the people that you have forsaken this matter and handed it over to me." So al-Hasan stood, praised Allah, and extolled Him, and then said: "As for what follows, the wisest of the wise is piety, and the most foolish of the fools is transgression. This matter over which Muawiya and I have differed is either the right of a person, and he is more deserving of it than me, or it is a right that is mine, and I have relinquished it in the desire to reform the ummah and spare their blood." {And I do not know; perhaps it is a trial for you and a provision until an appointed time} (Surah al-Anbiya, 21:111).

Chapter on the Succession of Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him)
Volume: (1) - Page Number: (376)
- Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl al-Qattan informed us, as did Abdullah ibn Ja'far, who said: Ya'qub ibn Sufyan narrated to us, and al-Humaydi narrated to us, and Sufyan narrated to us, and Isra'il, Abu Musa, said: I heard al-Hasan say: I heard Abu Bakrah say: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on the pulpit, and Hasan ibn Ali was with him, beside him. He was turning to the people once and then to him again, and he said: "My son this is a lord, and perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two factions of Muslims." Sufyan said: His mention of two factions of Muslims was very pleasing to us. The Sheikh said that they were pleased because the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) referred to both as Muslims. And this is a statement from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) regarding what occurred with Hasan ibn Ali after the death of Ali in his handing over of authority to Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan. And he said in his sermon: "O people, Allah has guided you by our first and protected your blood through our last, and this matter that I and Muawiyah have differed about is not the right of anyone who was more deserving of it than me but a right of mine that I left for Muawiyah in an effort to restore the Muslims and protect their blood. Rather, { AND I DO NOT KNOW, PERHAPS IT IS A TRIAL FOR YOU AND a provision for a time } (Surah al-Anbiya, 21:111)." The Sheikh, the Imam (may Allah have mercy on him), said: This which we have recorded in the book is the belief of the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah and their statements. We have dedicated a separate book to each chapter, containing explanations illuminated with their proofs and arguments. We have limited ourselves in this book to mentioning its foundations and alluding to the outlines of its evidence, intending the benefit of those who reflect upon it. And Allah grants us success in following the Sunnah and avoiding innovation, and makes the outcome of our affairs lead to righteousness and happiness, by His grace and the vastness of His mercy. Indeed, He is the Most Merciful, the Most Generous, the Expansive Forgiver.

So he praised Allah and extolled Him, and then said: "Indeed, the most discerning of the discerning is the pious, and the most incapacitated of the incapacitated is wrongdoing. Verily, this matter over which Mu'awiyah and I have differed is rightful for anyone who was more deserving of it or rightfully mine that I have left for Mu'awiyah, intending to mend the Muslims and preserve their blood." {And I do not know; perhaps it is a trial for you and a provision for a time} (Surah al-Anbiya 21:111). Then he sought forgiveness and descended.

90 - .... that Ali ibn Abi Talib was struck by Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam al-Muradi on Friday, three days before the 13th of Ramadan, in the year 40 AH. He remained in this condition from Friday until Saturday night and passed away on Sunday night, eleven nights before the 13th of Ramadan, in the year 40 AH. His son al-Hasan was pledged allegiance to the caliphate in Ramadan of that year. Al-Hasan remained for several days pondering his situation, but then he saw the people's division: a faction supporting him and another supporting Muawiya, and that the matter could not be resolved. He believed that focusing on the reform of the Muslims and protecting their blood was more important than considering his own rights, so he relinquished the caliphate to Muawiya. This occurred on the fifth of Rabi' al-Awwal in the year 41 AH, and it is said to have been in the later Rabi' or on the first of Jumada al-Awwal. His caliphate lasted for six months, minus a few days, and this year was termed the Year of Gathering. This was what the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) informed him about, saying, "Perhaps Allah will reconcile the two great factions through him." End of his statement. This is a hadith that is حسن صحيح (hasan sahih) and was narrated by al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud, and al-Nasa'i. Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi said: By mentioning al-Hasan ibn Ali, he means (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is referring to this al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib.

Behold, this matter over which you see me and Mu'awiya differing is not about the rightful claim of anyone who was more deserving of it than me, or a rightful matter that I chose to leave to Mu'awiya in order to promote the reconciliation of Muslims and to preserve their lives." {And I do not know, perhaps it is a trial for you and a temporary enjoyment until a time} (Surah al-Anbiya, 21:111).
