- Muhammad ibn Ali narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Urobah al-Harwani narrated to us, saying: Sulayman ibn Umar ibn Khalid narrated to us, saying: Ibn 'Aliyah narrated to us, from Ibn Awn, from Umayr ibn Ishaq, who said: I and a man entered upon al-Hasan ibn Ali to visit him while he was ill. He said, "O so-and-so, ask me." The man replied, "No, by Allah, we will not ask you until Allah grants you health, and then we will ask you." He said: Then the man went in (to another room) and came out to us, saying, "Ask me before you can no longer ask me." The man replied, "Rather, may Allah grant you health, and then I will ask you."
He then said: "I have been given a portion of my liver, and I have been poisoned several times, but I have not been poisoned like this time." Then I entered upon him the next day, and he was breathing his last, with al-Husayn at his head. He said, "O my brother, whom do you suspect?" Al-Hasan replied, "Who would want to kill you?" He said, "Yes." Al-Husayn continued, "If it is what I think, then Allah is more formidable in might and more severe in punishment. If it is not, I would not want an innocent person to be killed because of me." Then he passed away, may Allah, the Exalted, be pleased with him.
