[The text is lengthy, so only the relevant excerpt is provided here]
- .... It is said: that his wife, Ja'da bint al-Ash'ath ibn Qays, was instructed by Mu'awiya to poison him, and that when he died, she would be given forty thousand and married to his son Yazid. So when al-Hasan died, he fulfilled his promise to her with the money and said to her: "This is what you have done to the son of Fatima. What will you do to the son of Mu'awiya?" And she lost out and gained nothing. This is a matter known only to Allah, and Mu'awiya is far from it....
- .... And it was said that Yazid instructed Ja'da to do this. Both accounts were mentioned by the historians.
- .... Qasim ibn Asbagh al-Bayani narrated, saying: Abdullah ibn Ruh narrated to us, saying: Uthman ibn Umar ibn Fars narrated to us, saying: Ibn Aun narrated to me from Umayr ibn Ishaq, who said: We were with al-Hasan ibn Ali when he entered the restroom and then came out, and he said: "I have been poisoned many times, but I was never poisoned like this time, and I have indeed expelled a part of my liver." I saw him turning it over with a stick in his hand. Al-Husayn said to him, "O my brother, who poisoned you?" He replied, "What do you want with it? Do you want to kill him?" Al-Husayn said, "Yes." He replied, "If it is as I think, then Allah is more severe with a gumption. And if it is not, I do not wish to be killed by a cure." When the news of his death reached Mu'awiya, he went to Ibn Abbas and said to him: "O son of Abbas, be patient with al-Hasan; may Allah not sadden you or displease you." Ibn Abbas replied: "As for what Allah has left for you, O commander of the faithful, it will not sadden me or displease me." He gave him, in return for his words, a thousand and gifts and other things, saying: "Take this and divide it among your family."
- .... It was mentioned that when Mu'awiya heard of al-Hasan's death, he rejoiced, and those who were in his assembly with him rejoiced. Fakhta bint Qarzah, the wife of the officiant, heard the rejoicing. When she entered upon him, she said: "O commander of the faithful, I heard a loud rejoicing in your assembly. What is the news?" He replied: "Al-Hasan has died." She wept and said: "Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him, we shall return! The master of the Muslims and son of the Messenger of Allah is rejoiced over his death!" Mu'awiya said to her: "By Allah, it is as you said. So spare me your blame, woe to you!" Then Ibn Abbas entered upon him on the evening of the day of this incident and said: "O Ibn Abbas, did you hear of al-Hasan's death?" Ibn Abbas wept and said: "His death has not increased your lifespan...."
