649 - Muhammad ibn Ubayd narrated to us, who said: Sharhabil ibn Mudarik narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Naji, from his father, that he traveled with Ali (ra), who was the caretaker of his purification. When they reached Nineveh while he was en route to Siffin, Ali (ra) called out: "Be patient, Abu Abdullah, be patient, Abu Abdullah, by the bank of the Euphrates." I said, "What did he say?" He replied: "I entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) one day, and his eyes were overflowing with tears. I said, 'O Prophet of Allah, has someone made you angry? Why are your eyes overflowing with tears?'" He said: "No, but Gabriel rose from me before and informed me that Hussein would be killed by the bank of the Euphrates." He then said: "Would you like me to let you smell his soil?" I replied, "Yes." So he stretched out his hand, took a handful of soil, and gave it to me, and I could not help but have my eyes overflow as well.

They deceived him and humiliated him; may Allah kill them!" For I saw Fatimah (peace be upon her and her holy progeny) come to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in the morning with a pot she had made containing a type of porridge, which she carried in a dish. She set it down between his hands, and he said to her: "Where is your cousin?" She replied: "He is in the house." He said: "Go and call him, and bring me his sons." So she came back, leading her two sons, each by the hand, with Ali walking behind them until they entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He seated them in his lap, and Ali sat on his right, while Fatimah sat on his left. Umm Salamah said: Then he took from beneath me a Khayyabri cloak that was our blanket over the bed in the city of Medina and wrapped it around them all. He held the ends of the cloak in his left hand and raised his right hand to his Lord, the Almighty, and He said: "O Allah, my family! Remove from them the impurity and purify them entirely." O Allah, my household! Remove from them the impurity and purify them entirely. O Allah, my household! Remove from them the impurity and purify them entirely." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, are you not one of your family?" He replied: "Yes, so enter the cloak." She said: So I entered the cloak after he finished his prayer for his cousin, Ali, and his sons, and his daughter, Fatimah (peace be upon her and her holy progeny).
