363 - Abu Khaythamah narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ubayd narrated to us, saying: Sharhabil ibn Mudrik narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Najji, from his father, that he traveled with Ali, who was the custodian of his purification, and when he passed by Nineveh while on his way to Siffin, Ali called out: "Be patient, Abu Abdullah! Be patient, Abu Abdullah!" He said, "What is it, Abu Abdullah?" Ali replied: "I entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) one day, and his eyes were overflowing with tears." I said, "O Prophet of Allah, has someone made you angry? What is the matter with your eyes overflowing?"
He said: "No, rather Gabriel rose from beside me before and informed me that Hussein will be killed by the bank of the Euphrates." He then said, "Would you like me to let you smell his soil?" I said, "Yes." So he extended his hand, took a handful of soil, and gave it to me, and I could not help but have my eyes overflow with tears."
