The year of grief

Hadith No: 1
Ibn Sa'd - al-Tabaqat al-Kubra - al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah
Mentioning Abu Talib and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) embracing him, and his departure with him to Syria on the first occasion
Volume: (1) - Page Number: (125)
- He said: Muhammad ibn Umar al-Aslami narrated to us, saying: Abu Talib passed away on the fifteenth of Shawwal in the tenth year after the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was appointed as a prophet. He was then over eighty years old. Khadijah also died a month and five days after him, and she was then sixty-five years old. Thus, two great tragedies befell the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): the death of Khadijah bint Khuwailid and the death of his uncle, Abu Talib.

8613 - Abu Talib ibn Abd Manaf, also known as Shaybah ibn Abd al-Muttalib, Shaybah al-Haml ibn Hashim .... Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi narrated to us, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Ali narrated to me, saying: Abu Umar ibn Hayyuwiya narrated to me, saying: Ahmad ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, saying: Al-Husayn ibn Fahm narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Umar al-Aslami, who said: Abu Talib passed away on the 15th of Shawwal in the tenth year after the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) proclamation, and he was then eighty-two years old. Khadijah died a month and five days later, at that time fifty-five years old. Thus, two significant losses befell the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): the death of Khadijah and the death of his uncle, Abu Talib.

- .... And in the words of some of them: They used to wash their dead in the Age of Ignorance, and they would shroud them and pray over them. It was the duty of the deceased's guardian to stand after the body was placed on the bier and mention all their good qualities, praising them, and then say: "May the mercy of Allah be upon you," before burying them. It is as if the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) referred to that year as the Year of Sorrow, and he secluded himself in his home, minimizing his outings. Their time together (peace be upon him and her) lasted twenty-five years, according to the correct view.

- .... And when it was said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that Abu Talib had died, it greatly distressed him and his grief for it intensified. Then he entered and wiped his right forehead four times and his left forehead three times, and then he prayed for him, wishing him well. The death of Abu Talib weighed heavily on his nephew, so much so that he named that year the Year of Sorrow.

- .... His statement: "and the Year of Grief": It is recorded in the original and in al-Qāmūs with a د (dā) followed by a س (sīn) and the commentator of al-Qāmūs explicitly stated this. It is recorded in al-Muḥkam with a marked vowel. "the year in which Khadijah (may she be pleased with her) and Abu Ṭālib died, and which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called the Year of Grief." Tha'lab narrated this from Ibn al-A'rābi, who said: They both died three years before the Hijrah.
