- .... The second position:
That there is no evidence of polytheism from either of them, but they were both on the Hanifiyyah, the religion of their grandfather Ibrahim (peace be upon him), just as Zayd ibn Amru ibn Nufayl and his peers were in the Jahiliyyah.
This position was favored by Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (may he rest in peace), who added that all of his (peace be upon him) ancestors up to Adam were upon monotheism, as stated in his book Asrar al-Tanzil, in which he wrote: It is said that Azar was not the father of Ibrahim but rather his uncle, and they argued this with several points, including:
that the fathers of the prophets were not kafirun (disbelievers). This is supported by several indications, one of which is Allah's statement: {Indeed, you see him when he stands, and your gaze shifts among those who prostrate} (Ash-Shu'ara: 218-219).
It is said that this means he was transferring his light from one prostrator to another, and with this interpretation, the verse indicates that all the fathers of Muhammad (peace be upon him) were Muslims. Therefore, it must be concluded that the father of Ibrahim was not among the disbelievers; he was, rather, his uncle. The most that can be said is that his statement, {and your gaze shifts among those who prostrate} (Ash-Shu'ara: 219), could be understood in other ways. If narrations come regarding all of this, and there is no contradiction between them, the verse should be understood in light of all of them. Once this is established, it confirms that the father of Ibrahim was not one of the idol-worshippers. He (al-Razi) said, and what indicates that the ancestors of Muhammad (peace be upon him) were not polytheists is his (peace be upon him) statement:
"I have always transferred from the loins of the pure to the wombs of the pure." And Allah, the Exalted, said: {Indeed, the polytheists are unclean} (At-Tawbah: 28),
so it is necessary that none of his (peace be upon him) ancestors were polytheists.
