- .... And these verses that we mentioned and similar ones in the Quran indicate the excuse of the people of the interval (fatrah) that no warner came to them, even if they died in disbelief, and with this, a group of scholars agreed.

- Issue: The judgement regarding the parents of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is that they are both saved and not in hell. Many scholars have explicitly stated this, and they have various methods to support it: The first method is that they died before the prophecy, and there is no punishment before it, due to the Almighty's statement: {And We would not punish until We had sent a Messenger (Surah al-Isra: 15)}. Our Ash'ari imams, both from the theologians and those of jurisprudence and fundamentals, have unanimously agreed that whoever dies without receiving the message will die saved, and that he will not be fought until invited to Islam, and if killed, he is to be compensated with blood money and atonement, as stated by Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah be pleased with him) and the other scholars. In fact, some scholars added that it is obligatory to seek retribution for his killing, but the correct view is the opposite, as he is not a true Muslim and the condition for retribution is equivalence. Some jurists have reasoned that if he dies, he will not be punished because he is based on the original nature, and there was no stubbornness or rejection from him, nor did a Messenger come to him to be denied. This method was the first I heard mentioned in this context from our شيخنا, Shaykh al-Islam Sharaf al-Din al-Manawi, when he was asked about the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) father. He vehemently roared at the questioner and, when asked whether his Islam had been established, replied, "He died in the time of trial, and there is no punishment before the prophecy."
- This was also conveyed by Sabt ibn al-Jawzi in his book Mir'at al-Zaman from a number of people, for he narrated his grandfather's comments on the hadith of the mother's (peace be upon her) resurrection and then said the following: And some said: Allah, the Exalted, has said: {And We would not punish until We had sent a Messenger (Surah al-Isra: 15),} and the call did not reach his father and mother, so what was their sin? Al-Abi firmly stated this in his commentary on Sahih Muslim. I will mention his wording. There are also narrations regarding the people of the time of trial that they will be tested on the Day of Resurrection, and verses indicating that they will not be punished.
- To this, the حافظ of the era, Shaykh al-Islam Abu al-Fadl ibn Hajar, inclined in some of his books, saying: And it is presumed that the family of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) - meaning those who died before the prophecy - will obey during the trial in honor of him (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), so that his eyes may find comfort in them. I then saw him say in al-Isabah: It has been reported through several chains concerning the elderly shaykh, those who died in the time of trial, those born mute, blind, deaf, or born insane, or who became insane before maturity, and similar cases, that each of them will present a justification and say, "If I had been able to understand or remember, I would have believed." A fire will be raised before them, and it will be said, "Enter it." Whoever enters it will find it cool and safe, and whoever refuses will be compelled to enter. This is the essence of what has been reported on this matter. He stated that he had compiled its various sources in a separate volume. We hope that Abdul Muttalib and the members of his household will be among those who enter it willingly and be saved, except for Abu Talib, for he witnessed the prophecy and did not believe, and it is established that he is in a shallow place in hell. I have included the story of the trial within this method, although it seems that it is an independent approach. However, I found it serves a subtle purpose that will not be lost on those with deep understanding.

- .... Abd al-Razzaq, ibn Jarir, ibn Mundhir, and ibn Abi Hatim narrated from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: "On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will gather the people of the period of ignorance, the deluded, the deaf, the mute, and the old men who did not experience Islam, and then He will send them a messenger saying, 'Enter the Fire.' They will say, 'How can we enter it when no messengers have come to us?' He will swear by Allah, 'If they had entered it, it would have been coolness and safety for them.' Then He will send to them again, and those who wish to obey Him will obey." Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Read if you wish: {And We would not punish until We sent a messenger.} (Al-Isra 17:15)."

150 - .... The answer may be that what is in the authentic reports was initially the case, then Allah, Mighty and Majestic be He, revived them until they believed in him (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) as a miracle and a special privilege for them, benefiting from their faith in him after death on the understanding that the correct view among the Shafi'is is that the people of the interval (fatrah) will be saved, and many scholars have written about their Islam, thanking Allah for their efforts. Among them is the hafiz al-Sakhawi, who said in al-Maqasid: I have written a part on this topic, and what I believe is that refraining from this discussion is more appropriate, both in affirmation and negation. And he said in al-Durar: Some have narrated it with a weak chain of transmission. How beautiful is the statement of the hafiz of Damascus, Ibn Nasir al-Din:
"May Allah bestow upon the Prophet additional grace upon grace, and he was compassionate towards him.
So he revived his mother and likewise his father as a subtle favor for believing in him."
Thus, the ancient was in this possible, * even if the recent narration of it is weak."

150 - .... Among them is the Hafiz al-Suyuti, who authored several works on this topic, including: (Masalik al-Hunafa fi Islam Waliday al-Mustafa), and the gist of what he mentioned on this matter can be summarized in three approaches. The first approach is: that they died before the Prophethood and there is no punishment before it, due to His قوله تعالى: { وَمَا كُنَّا مُعَذِّبِينَ حَتَّى نَبْعَثَ رَسُولًا (Al-Isra: 15) } And the Ash'arites among the people of theology and principles, as well as the Shafi'is among the jurists, unanimously agree that whoever dies without having received the message will die in a state of salvation.

Then He will send them a messenger saying, 'Enter the Fire.' They will say, 'How can we enter it when no messenger has come to us?' He will reply, 'By God, if they had entered it, it would have been coolness and safety for them.' Then He will send to them again, and those who want to obey Him will obey." - .... It is established that no messenger was sent to the Arabs after Ishmael, for Ishmael’s prophethood ended with his death, like that of the other prophets, because the continuation of prophethood after death is a characteristic of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Thus, there is no punishment upon the people of the period of ignorance among the Arabs, even if they changed, altered, or worshipped idols, and the reports regarding the punishment of those mentioned, that is, those who changed, altered, or worshipped idols, are to be interpreted or understood as warnings, urging them to adhere to Islam.

- .... As for the statement of al-Fakhr al-Razi that the call of the messengers to monotheism was always known, its answer is that each messenger was only sent to a specific people, so those to whom he was not sent will not be punished. And the answer to what is sound regarding the punishment of the People of the Interval is that they are isolated reports, so they do not contradict what is certain, or the punishment may be limited to that particular individual, specifically in cases where no interpretation is acceptable, as mentioned earlier. This is his statement. It has been reported that they, meaning the People of the Interval, will be tested on the Day of Resurrection.

- .... Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said: Therefore, it is likely that his family (peace be upon him), meaning those who died before the Prophethood, will obey during the trial out of honor for him (peace be upon him) so that his heart may find peace, and he hopes that Abdul Muttalib will enter Paradise among a group who enter it willingly.
- .... Among the evidence that Al-Hafiz al-Suyuti used to argue that his (peace be upon him) parents are not in the Fire was his statement: Because if they were in the Fire, they would have a lighter punishment than Abu Talib, since they are closer to him and have a simpler excuse, as they did not witness the Prophethood nor was Islam presented to them for them to refuse, unlike Abu Talib. And the truthful one (peace be upon him) informed that he is the least punished of all people, so his parents (peace be upon him) are not among the inhabitants of the Fire. He said that this is referred to among scholars of fundamental beliefs as an indication of meaning.

- .... Some of the Malikis interpreted the authentic Hadiths regarding the punishment of the people of the interim (fatrah) in a way that differs from those among them who did not associate others with Allah or affirm His oneness, but rather spent their lives in ignorance of all this. There is disagreement among them, as well as with those who guided themselves with their intellect, such as Qus ibn Sa'idah and Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufayl. However, there is no disagreement regarding their salvation. In light of this, it is plausible to assume in the generosity of Allah, the Exalted, that the parents of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) were from one of these two categories. It has even been said that all of his (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) ancestors were monotheists, due to the Almighty's statement: {And your Lord is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful} (Ash-Shu'ara: 219). However, Abu Hayyan rejected this in his Tafsir, stating that it is the belief of the Shi'a, and the meaning of the verse is: Your Lord is Most Knowing of the rightful, and you are among them.

23 - And His statement, Glorified and Exalted be He: {And We would not punish until We had sent a Messenger} (Al-Isra 17:15), Mu'mar reported from Ibn Tawus, from his father, from Abu Hurairah, who said: "On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will gather the people of the age of ignorance, the insane, the deaf, the mute, the speechless, and the elderly who did not witness Islam, and He will send them a Messenger saying, 'Enter the Fire.' They will say, 'How can we enter it when no Messenger has come to us?' He will reply, 'Even if they entered it, it would be coolness and safety for them.' Then Allah will send them a Messenger, and those who wish to obey him will obey." Then Abu Hurairah recited: {And We would not punish until We had sent a Messenger} (Al-Isra 17:15). Others said: "The Day of Resurrection is not a day of worship or trial, and no Messenger will be sent to anyone." But the meaning of the verse is: "And We would not punish anyone in the world by destruction until We had sent a Messenger."

And there have been many hadiths reported regarding the people of the period between prophets that they will be suspended until they are tested on the Day of Resurrection, and whoever obeys will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys will enter Hell, and three of these hadiths are considered authentic: the first is the hadith of al-Aswad ibn Sari' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Four will present excuses on the Day of Resurrection: a deaf man who cannot hear anything, a foolish man, an elderly man, and a man who died in a period between prophets."

Al-Hafiz Imad ad-Din ibn Kathir (may he be pleased with him) also mentioned the story of the trial concerning the parents of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and all others of the interval, saying: "Some of them will respond, and some will not respond," but he did not say that it is assumed the parents of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would respond. However, there is no doubt that it is reasonable to think that God Almighty would grant them success at that time to respond, due to the intercession of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." This was reported by Tammam in his Fawa'id with a weak chain of narration from the hadith of Ibn Umar, raised to the Prophet: "On the Day of Resurrection, I will intercede for my father and my mother."
