- .... The second position:
That no polytheism was established from either of them, but they were on the Hanifiyyah, the religion of their grandfather Ibrahim (peace be upon him), just as Zayd ibn Amr ibn Nufayl and his peers were in ignorance.
This position was inclined toward by Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (may he be rewarded), who added that all the fathers of (peace be upon him) were unified in belief up to Adam. He stated in his book (Asrar al-Tanzil) the following: It is said that Azar was not the father of Ibrahim but his uncle, and they argued this with several points, including:
that the ancestors of the prophets were not disbelievers. This is supported by several indications, one of which is His (Exalted be He) statement: {Indeed, those who see you turning your face in the sky, We will turn you to a Qiblah that will please you} (Surah al-Baqarah 2:144).
It was said that this means: he was transferring his light from one prostrator to another, and with this understanding, the verse indicates that all the fathers of Muhammad (peace be upon him) were Muslims. Therefore, it must be concluded that the father of Ibrahim was not among the disbelievers; he was, rather, his uncle. The most that can be said in this regard is that His statement: {and your turning among those who prostrate} (2:144) could be understood in other ways. If narrations come mentioning all of them with no contradiction among them, the verse must be understood in this broader sense. Whenever this is established, it confirms that the father of Ibrahim was not among the worshippers of idols. He also mentioned that the ancestors of Muhammad (peace be upon him) were not polytheists, stating (peace be upon him):
"I have always transferred from the loins of the pure to the wombs of the pure." And Allah, the Exalted, said: {Indeed, the polytheists are impure} (Surah At-Tawbah 9:28),
so it must be that none of his (peace be upon him) ancestors were polytheists.
