1168 - Abdullah narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us, from Quthna, Yahya ibn Hammad narrated to us, from Quthna, Abu 'Uwanah narrated to us, from Quthna, Abu Balj narrated to us, from Quthna, Amr ibn Maymun narrated, saying: I was sitting with Ibn Abbas when nine men approached him and said: O Abu Abbas, will you not stand with us, or will you not speak with us alone, away from these? Ibn Abbas replied: Rather, I will stand with you. He was in good health that day, before he became blind. So they began to talk, but we did not know what they said. Then he came, dusting off his garment and saying: Ugh! Ugh! They spoke ill of a man whom ten others would support. They spoke ill of a man the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him: "I will send a man whom Allah will never disgrace, who loves Allah and His Messenger." Then those who were eager for this stood in anticipation. He asked: Where is Ali? They said: He is at the mill, grinding. He said: Could any of you not grind? Then Ali came, his eyes swollen, barely able to see. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then spat into his eyes and shook the flag three times, handing it to him. Ali came back with Safiyyah, the daughter of Huyayy. Then he sent someone with a chapter from Surah At-Tawbah and sent Ali after him to take it from him. He said: "No one will take it except a man from me, and I am from him." He also said to his cousins: Which of you will be my ally in this world and the Hereafter? Ali was sitting with them, and he replied: I will be your ally in this world and the Hereafter. He then blessed him and turned to each of the men individually, saying: Which of you will be my ally in this world and the Hereafter? They all refused. He said: You will be my ally in this world and the Hereafter. And it was Ali who was the first to believe among the people after Khadijah (peace be upon her).
And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) took his robe and placed it over Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn, saying: {Indeed, Allah intends to remove from you the impurity, O People of the Prophet's House, and to make you pure and holy} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33). Ali then protected himself by wearing the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) robe, sleeping in his place. The polytheists were throwing stones at the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and Abu Bakr came, finding Ali asleep. Abu Bakr thought he was the Prophet of Allah. He said: O Prophet of Allah! Ali replied: The Prophet of Allah has gone towards the well of Maimun; follow him. So Abu Bakr went and entered the cave with him. Ali continued to be pelted with stones, just as the Prophet of Allah had been, and he was flinching, his head wrapped in the robe, not uncovering it until morning. Then he uncovered his head, and they said: You are indeed unreasonable! Your companion was being attacked, yet he did not flinch, while you do, and we find that strange. The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) led the people in the Battle of Tabuk. Ali said to him: Will you not take me with you? The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: No. Ali wept, and the Prophet said to him: Does it not please you to be to me in relation, as Aaron was to Moses, except that you are not a prophet? It is not right for me to leave except that you are my successor. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) also said to him: You are the guardian of every believer, man or woman, after me. Abu Bakr closed all the doors of the mosque, except for Ali's door. He would enter the mosque in a state of ritual impurity, as this was his only path, and he had no other way. He said: Whoever I have been a friend to, Ali is his friend. And Allah informed us in the Quran that He was pleased with them, with the companions of the tree, knowing what was in their hearts. He did not tell us that He became angry with them afterwards. The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Umar when he said: Give me permission to strike his neck: I would do so, and what do you know? Perhaps Allah, the Almighty, looked at the people of Badr and said: "Continue to do what you wish."
