- Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Ya'qub ibn Sufyan narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Abd al-Hamid narrated to me, saying: Qais narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Abayah ibn Rub'i, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic be He, divided creation into two parts and made me in the better of the two parts. This is His statement: 'And the companions of the right' and 'the companions of the left.' So I am among the companions of the right, and I am the best of the companions of the right." Then He divided the two parts into three, and made me in the better three. This is His statement, the Exalted: (Surah al-Waqi'ah 56:8) (Surah al-Waqi'ah 56:10) "So the companions of the right are those who will be in the right, and the forerunners, the forerunners." Thus, I am among the forerunners, and I am the best of the forerunners." Then He made the three into tribes and made me in the best of the tribes. This is the statement of Allah, the Exalted: {And We made you into nations and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:13). "And I am the most righteous of the children of Adam and the most honored before Allah, without pride." Then He made the tribes into houses and made me in the best of the houses. This is His statement, the Mighty and Majestic be He: {Indeed, Allah wants to remove the impurity from you, O people of the Prophet's house, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Surah al-Ahzab 33:33). So I and the people of my house are purified from sins.

In the narration of the Qadi and al-Sulami, it states: "These are my family." She added: "So I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, am I not also from the People of the House?' He said: 'Yes, you are, if Allah wills.'" Abu Abdullah said: "This is a sound hadith, and its chain is reliable." The Sheikh observed: "There have been narrations reported in support of it, and then in opposition to it, but none that are as strong. In the Book of Allah, there is clarity concerning what we intended in the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) use of the term 'the family' and what he meant by it—whether it be his wives or if they are included within it."
