14696 - From Amr ibn Maymun - meaning al-Awdi - who said: I was sitting with Ibn Abbas when nine men came to him and said: "O Ibn Abbas, either you stand with us or these people will leave us." Ibn Abbas replied: "Ibn Abbas said: Rather, I will stand with you," and he was in good health that day, before he became blind... He (Ibn Abbas) continued: And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) took his cloak and placed it over Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn (ra), and said: {“Indeed, Allah intends to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's House, and to purify you with a thorough purification”} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33).

14973 - Also narrated from Abu Ammar, who said: I was sitting with Wathilah ibn al-Asqah when they mentioned Ali and reviled him. When they stood up to leave, he said: "Sit, and I will tell you about what they insulted." "I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) one day when Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn (peace be upon them) came to him. He draped a cloak over them and then said:
'O Allah, these are the People of My House. Remove from them impurity and cleanse them with a thorough cleansing.'" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, and me?" He replied, "And you." He said: "By Allah, this is the most reassuring of my deeds within myself." In another narration, he said it is the most hopeful of what I hope for. Al-Tabarani narrated it with two chains, and the men in the narration are the men of authenticity, except for Kulthum ibn Ziyad, whom Ibn Hibban trusted, though he was considered weak.

While he was praying with the people, a man jumped at him and stabbed him with a dagger in his thigh. He suffered from this injury for several months, then he stood and delivered a sermon on the pulpit and said: "O people of Iraq, fear Allah concerning us, for we are your leaders and guests, and we are the Ahl al-Bayt whom Allah, the Exalted, has said about: {Indeed, Allah only wishes to remove the impurity from you, O Ahl al-Bayt, and to make you pure and spotless} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33)." He continued speaking that day until you could see no one in the mosque except weeping. This was narrated by al-Tabarani, and its narrators are trustworthy.

15211 - Anas reported that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevents you from marrying Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) ...." When she had finished the preparations and had brought them into a house, he said: "O Ali, do not inform your family of anything until I come to you." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came to them, and Fatimah was veiled while Ali was sitting and Umm Ayman was in the house. He said: "O Umm Ayman, bring me a cup of water." She brought him a large bowl containing water, and he drank from it, then rinsed his mouth in it, and handed it to Fatimah. She drank, and he took some from it and struck her forehead, between her shoulders, and her chest, then gave it to Ali, saying: "O Ali, drink." Ali drank, and then he took some from it and struck his forehead and between his shoulders, and said: "They are my Ahlul Bayt. So purify them and remove any impurity from them." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and Umm Ayman left, saying: "O Ali, your family."

2245 - Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Sallam narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Rahman ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: Al-Walid ibn Muslim and Umar ibn Abd al-Wahid both said: Al-Awzai narrated to us, from Shaddad Abu Ammar, from Wathila ibn al-Asqah, who said: I asked about Ali in his home, and it was said to me: He has gone to bring the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). When he came, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) entered, and I entered as well. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sat on the bed and seated Fatimah to his right and Ali to his left, with Hasan and Husayn between his hands. He then said: {Indeed, Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O People of the House, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Surah al-Ahzab 33:33). O Allah, these are the People of My House. Wathila said: I said from the side of the house, "And am I not, O Messenger of Allah, one of your family?" He replied, "And you are from My family." Wathila said: This is indeed one of the most hopeful things I could hope for.
