- .... Ibn Abi Hatim said: My father narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Walid narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Awaneq narrated to us, from Husayn ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Ibn Jumayla, who said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed as a successor when Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed. He said: While he was praying, a man pounced on him and stabbed him with a dagger. Husayn claimed that he heard it was a man from Bani Asad who stabbed him, and Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) was in the position of prostration. He said they claimed that the stab landed in his thigh, and he was ill from it for several months before recovering. Then he sat on the pulpit
and said: "O people of Iraq, fear Allah regarding us, for we are your leaders and guests, and we are the People of the House concerning whom Allah, the Exalted, said::{Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O People of the House, and to make you pure and holy}"
(Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33). He said he kept repeating this until there was no one among the people of the mosque except that he was weeping and longing.
- .... And al-Suddi said, from Abu al-Daylam, who said: Ali ibn al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said to a man from the people of Sham: "Did you not read in Al-Ahzab":
(Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O People of the House, and to make you pure and holy) (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33). The man replied, "Yes, and you are indeed those (People of the House)." He said, "Yes."
