Hadith No: 1
Al-Tabari - Tafsir al-Tabari = Jami' al-Bayan 'an Ta'wil Ayae al-Quran - Surah Al-Ahzab (33): 33
And His statement: {And establish prayer and give zakah} means: And establish the obligatory prayers and give the obligatory zakah on your wealth, and obey Allah and His Messenger in what He commands you and forbids you.
{Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's House}
means: Allah only intends to remove evil and immorality from you, O People of Muhammad's House, and to purify you.

- Mention of those who said this: Bashar said: Yazid said: Sa'id narrated to us from Qatadah, regarding His statement: {Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's House, and to purify you completely} (Al-Ahzab 33:33) that they are the People of the House whom Allah has purified from evil and chosen for mercy from Him.

- Yunus narrated to me, saying: Ibn Wahb narrated to us, saying: Ibn Zayd said regarding His statement: {Indeed, Allah only wants to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's House, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Al-Ahzab 33:33): He said that the impurity here is Satan and other forms of impurity: disbelief. The people of interpretation differed on who was meant by His statement, the People of the Prophet's House. Some of them said that it referred to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Ali, Fatimah, and Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them).

- Mention of those who said this: Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to me, saying: Bakar ibn Yahya ibn Zabban al-Anzari narrated to us, saying: Mundhir narrated to us from al-A'mash, from Atiyyah from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "This verse was revealed concerning five: me, Ali (peace be upon him), Hassan (peace be upon him), Hussein (peace be upon him), and Fatimah (peace be upon her and holy progeny)": {Indeed, Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O people of the Prophet's House, and to purify you thoroughly} (Al-Ahzab 33:33).

- Ibn Waki' narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us, from Zakariya, from Mus'ab ibn Shaybah, from Safiyyah bint Shaybah, who said: A'ishah said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went out one morning wearing a black woolen cloak, tightly wrapped, and Hassan came and entered with him. Then he said: {Allah only wants to remove the impurity from you, O inhabitants of the Prophet's household, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Surah al-Ahzab 33:33).

- Ibn Waki' narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Ali ibn Zayd from Anas: that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would pass by Fatimah's house for six months whenever he went out to prayer and say: "Prayer, O people of the house!" {Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O members of the Prophet's household, and to purify you thoroughly} (Al-Ahzab 33:33).

- Musa ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Masruqi narrated to me, saying: Yahya ibn Ibrahim ibn Suwayd al-Nakha'i narrated to us, from Hilal ibn Miqalas, from Zubaid, from Shaher ibn Hawshab from Umm Salamah, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) was with me, along with Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn. I prepared a dish for them, and they ate and then slept, covered by a cloak or quilt. Then he said: O Allah, these are my Ahl al-Bayt; remove the impurity from them and purify them thoroughly.

- Ibn Waki' narrated to us, who said: Abu Nu'aim narrated to us, who said: Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq narrated to us, from Abu Dawud from Abu al-Hamra, who said: I engaged in a military post (muratabit) in Medina for seven months during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He said: I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) when dawn broke come to the door of Ali and Fatimah and say: Prayer, prayer: {Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O people of the Prophet's House, and to purify you thoroughly} (Al-Ahzab 33:33). Abd al-A'la ibn Wasil narrated to me, who said: al-Fadl ibn Dakin narrated to us, who said: Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq narrated to us with a chain similar to that, from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).

- Abd al-A'la ibn Wasil narrated to me, saying: Al-Fadl ibn Dukayn narrated to us, saying: Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq narrated to us, with his chain of narration from the Prophet (peace be upon him) similar to this. Abd al-A'la ibn Wasil narrated to me, saying: Al-Fadl ibn Dukayn narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Salam ibn Harb narrated to us from Kulthum al-Muharibi, from Abu Ammar, who said: I was sitting with Wathila ibn al-Asqa when they mentioned Ali (peace be upon him) and insulted him. When they stood up, he said: Sit until I tell you about this one they insulted. I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn came to him, and he draped a cloak over them, then said: O Allah, these are my people of the household! O Allah, remove from them the impurity and purify them thoroughly. I said, O Messenger of Allah, and me? He said, And you. He said, By Allah, this was the most trustworthy of my deeds in my view.

- Abd al-Karim ibn Abi Umayr narrated to me, who said: Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, who said: Abu Amr narrated to us, who said: Shaddad Abu Ammar narrated to me, who said: I heard Wathila ibn al-Asq' narrating. He said: I asked about Ali ibn Abi Talib in his home, and Fatimah replied, "He has gone to bring the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)," when he came and entered. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sat on the bed, and Fatimah was seated to his right, and Ali to his left, with Hasan and Husayn between his hands. He then wrapped them in his cloak and said: {Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's Household, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Al-Ahzab 33:33}. O Allah, these are my family; O Allah, my family are most deserving!" Wathila said: So I spoke from the side of the house, "And I, O Messenger of Allah, am I not also of your family?" He replied, "You are also of my family." Wathila said: This is one of the most hopeful things I could wish for.

- Abu Kuraib narrated to me, saying: Waki' narrated to us, from Abd al-Hamid ibn Bahram, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, from Fudayl ibn Marzuk, from Atiyyah, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri from Umm Salamah, who said: When this verse was revealed: {Indeed, Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O inhabitants of the Prophet's household, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Al-Ahzab 33:33), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn and covered them with a Khaybari cloak, and said: O Allah, these are the people of my household. O Allah, remove the impurity from them and purify them with a thorough purification. Umm Salamah said: "Are you not one of them?" He replied: "You are to good."

- Abu Kuraib narrated to us, who said: Musab ibn al-Muqdam narrated to us, who said: Sa'id ibn Zurbi narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Abu Huraira from Umm Salama, who said: Fatimah came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) with a large pot she had prepared, containing a porridge, which she was placing in a dish before him. He asked, "Where is your cousin and your two sons?" She replied, "They are in the house." He said, "Call them." So she went to Ali and said, "The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is calling you and your two sons." Umm Salama continued: When he saw them approaching, he reached out to a cloak that was on the bedding, stretched it out, and spread it out, then seated them on it. Then he took the four corners of the cloak in his left hand and gathered it over their heads, and gestured with his right hand to his Lord, saying: "These are the people of the household; remove the impurity from them and purify them completely."

- Abu Kuraibr narrated to us, who said: Hasan ibn Atiyyah narrated to us, who said: Fudayl ibn Marzuq narrated to us, from Atiyyah, from Abu Sa'id from Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), that this verse was revealed in her house: {Indeed, Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O inhabitants of the Prophet's House, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Al-Ahzab 33:33). She said: And I was sitting at the door of the house, and I said: Am I not, O Messenger of Allah, one of the People of the House? He replied: You are on the right path; you are one of the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). She said: And in the house were the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Ali, Fatimah, Hassan, and Hussein (peace be upon them all).

- Abu Kuwayb narrated to us, saying: Khalid ibn Makhlad narrated to us, saying: Musa ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, from Hashim ibn Hashim ibn Utbah ibn Abi Waqqas, from Abdullah ibn Wahb ibn Zum'ah, who said: Umm Salamah informed me that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) gathered Ali and the two Hasanins, then he brought them under his cloak and began to fervently pray to Allah, and then said: "These are the People of my House." Umm Salamah said, "O Messenger of Allah, include me among them." He replied, "You are indeed one of my family."

- Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Tusi narrated to me, who said: Abdul Rahman ibn Salih narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Isbahani narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Ubayd al-Makki, from Ata' from Umar ibn Abi Salamah, who said: This verse was revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) while he was in the house of Umm Salamah: {Allah only intends to remove the uncleanness from you, O People of the Prophet's House, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Al-Ahzab 33:33). Then he called Hasan, Husayn, and Fatimah and seated them in front of him, and called Ali and seated him behind him. Then he and they were covered with a cloak, and he said: These are my Ahlulbayt. Allah has removed the uncleanness from them and purified them with a thorough purification. Umm Salamah said: I am with them in your place, and you are on goodness.

- Muhammad ibn Umara narrated to me, who said: Isma'il ibn Aban narrated to us, who said: al-Sabah ibn Yahya al-Mari narrated to us from al-Suddi from Abu al-Daylam, who said: Ali ibn al-Husayn said to a man from Sham: Have you not read in Al-Ahzab:{Indeed, Allah only wishes to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's House, and to purify you thoroughly} (Al-Ahzab 33:33) He said, And you are they? He replied, Yes.

- Ibn al-Munthir narrated to us, who said: Ibn al-Munthir narrated to us, from Abu Bakr al-Hanafi, who said: Bukayr ibn Musmar narrated to us, who said: I heard Amer ibn Sa'd say: Sa'd said, "When the revelation descended upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he took Ali, his two sons, and Fatimah, and gathered them under his cloak, then said, 'My Lord, these are my family and the people of my household.'"

- Ibn Humayd narrated to us, who said: Abdullah ibn Abd al-Quddus narrated to us, from al-A'mash from Hakim ibn Sa'd, who said: We mentioned Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) in the presence of Um Salamah. She said: This was revealed about him: {Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's Household, and to purify you completely} (Al-Ahzab 33:33). Um Salamah said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came to my house and said: Do not let anyone in. Then Fatimah came, and I could not prevent her from her father. Then Hassan came, and I could not stop him from entering to his grandfather and mother. Then Husayn came, and I could not hinder him. They all gathered around the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on a mat, and the Messenger of Allah covered them with a cloak that he had on. Then he said: These are my People of the Household; they are free from impurity, and I have purified them completely. This verse was revealed when they were gathered on the mat. She said: So I said, O Messenger of Allah, and me? She said: By Allah, he did not respond. He said: You are to good. Others said: Rather, he meant the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) by this.

- .... and Abu al-Hamra narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): Abd al-Ala ibn Wasil and Sufyan ibn Waki both said: Abu Nu'im al-Fadl ibn Dukin narrated to us, saying: Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Abu Dawud told me from Abu al-Hamra, who said: "I remained in a state of watchfulness (murabita) in Medina for seven months during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) come to the door of Ali and Fatimah (peace be upon them) whenever dawn broke. He would say: 'Prayer, prayer!': {Allah only wishes to remove the impurity from you, O Ahl al-Bayt, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Surah al-Ahzab 33:33)."
