This narration indicates that those intended in this verse are the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Ali, Fatima, Hasan, and Husayn.

So she brought them to him, and he covered them with the Kisa (cloak) of Fadak. Then he placed his hand upon them and said: "O Allah, these are the family of Muhammad. Thus, send Your blessings and greet them with peace. You are indeed Praiseworthy and Majestic." 770 - And what Suleiman al-Kaysani narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Rahman ibn Ziyad narrated to us. And what al-Rabi' al-Muradi narrated to us, saying: Asad ibn Musa narrated to us, both said: Abd al-Hamid ibn Bahram narrated to us. Shahr narrated to us, saying: I heard Um Salama when the news of the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali came to her, and she said: "They killed him; may Allah kill them! They stripped him and disgraced him; may Allah curse them!" For I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his holy progeny, when Fatimah came to him in the morning with a large dish she had made, carrying it in a plate until she placed it between his hands. He said to her: "Where is your cousin?" She replied: "He is in the house." He said: "Go and call him, and bring me your sons." So she came back leading her two sons, each one of them, while Ali was following them, walking, until they entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his holy progeny. He seated them in his lap, and Ali sat on his right, while Fatimah sat on his left. Um Salama said: Then he pulled from beneath me a fine mantle that was a mat for us on the bed in Medina, and the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him and his holy progeny, wrapped it around them all, taking hold of the ends of the mantle with his left hand and raising his right hand to his Lord, Almighty and Glorious Be He, saying: "O Allah, remove the impurity from them and purify them with a thorough purification," three times. She said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, are you not one of your family?" He replied: "Indeed, I am." She said: "Then enter the mantle." So I entered after he completed his prayer for his cousin, Ali, and his two sons, and his daughter, Fatimah, peace be upon them all.

771 - And what has been narrated to us by Ibrahim ibn Ahmad ibn Marwan al-Wasiti, Abu Ishaq, who said: Muhammad ibn Aban al-Wasiti narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn al-Isbahani narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Ubayd al-Makki, from Ata ibn Abi Rabah from Umar ibn Abi Salamah, who said: This verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) while he was in the house of Umm Salamah.: {Indeed, Allah only wishes to remove from you, O People of the Prophet's House, any uncleanliness and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Surah al-Ahzab 33:33). Umm Salamah said: Then the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called Hassan and Hussein and Fatimah and placed them between his hands, and he called Ali and placed him behind his back. Then he covered them all with a cloak and said: "O Allah, these are the People of My House; remove from them any uncleanliness and purify them with a thorough purification." Chapter on Clarifying the Ambiguity of What Was Narrated from Him, Peace Be Upon Him, in Relation to the Meaning of Allah's Words, the Exalted:
{“Indeed, Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O people of the Prophet's household, and to purify you with a thorough purification”} (Surah al-Ahzab, 33:33)
Volume: (2) - Page Number: (244)
772 - What has been narrated to us: Fahd narrated to us, saying: Sa’id ibn Kathir ibn Ufir narrated to us, from Ibn Lahi’ah, from Abu Sakhr, from Abu Muawiyah al-Bajali, from Umrah al-Hamdaniyyah, who said: I went to Umm Salamah and greeted her. She replied, "Who are you?" I said, "Umrah al-Hamdaniyyah." She said, "Umrah, O Mother of the Believers, tell me about this man who was killed among us." She meant Ali ibn Abi Talib, with both love and hatred. Umm Salamah said: "Do you love him or hate him?" I replied, "I neither love him nor hate him." She said, "Allah revealed this verse: {“Indeed, Allah only intends to remove the impurity from you, O people of the Prophet's household, and to purify you with a thorough purification”} (Surah al-Ahzab, 33:33) and there were none in the house except Gabriel, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn, peace be upon them all." So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, am I not one of the people of the house?" He replied, "Indeed, you have goodness with Allah." I wished he had said, "Yes," for it would have been dearer to me than anything the sun rises and sets upon. This indicates that what we have narrated in these reports, regarding what was from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) to Umm Salamah, mentioned therein, did not mean that she was one of those intended by what is in the verse being recited in this chapter, and that those intended within it are the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn, peace be upon them, rather than anyone else. Furthermore, this also indicates the intention of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in his words to Umm Salamah in what was narrated in these reports, saying to her: "You are from my family."

Chapter on Clarifying the Ambiguity of What Was Narrated from Him, Peace Be Upon Him, regarding the Meaning of God's Words, Exalted and Almighty be He:
{Indeed, Allah only wants to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's House, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33) - who they are
Volume: (2) - Page Number: (245)
773 - What has been narrated to us by Muhammad ibn al-Hajjaj al-Hadrami and Sulayman al-Kaysani, both said: Bishr ibn Bakr al-Bajjali narrated to us from al-Awza'i, who said: Abu Ammar informed me, and Wathila ibn al-Asqa told me: I went to Ali but did not find him. Fatimah said, "Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny); he will summon him." So he came with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and they entered, and I entered with them. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called for Hassan and Hussein and seated each of them on his thigh, bringing Fatimah closer to his lap, along with her husband, and then he wrapped them all in a cloak while I was sitting at a distance. Then he said: {Indeed, Allah only wants to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's House, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33). Then he said, "O Allah, these are my family; they are the people of truth." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, am I not one of your family?" He replied, "You are one of my family." Wathila said, "This is one of the most hopeful things I hope for." Wathila was farther from him, peace be upon him, than Umm Salamah, because he was merely a man from Banu Laith, not from Quraysh, and Umm Salamah's position in relation to Quraysh was the same as hers in relation to him. Thus, his statement to Wathila, "You are one of my family," meant due to your following me and believing in me. You have thereby entered into my overall community. We have found that Allah mentioned in His Book something that indicates this meaning with His words: And Noah called to his Lord and said, "My Lord, indeed my son is of my family." So He answered him in that by saying, "Indeed, he is not of your family; he has acted unlawfully" (Surah Hud 11:45-46). Just as it was possible for Him to exclude him from his family, even though he was his son, due to his disagreement with him in faith, it was also possible to include in his family one who is in agreement with him in faith, even if he is not of his kin. This is also what occurred with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in His response to Umm Salamah: "You are of my family," which may also be understood in this sense. His saying that to her was similar to what He said to Wathila, as well as the hadith of Sa'd and what we have mentioned along with it from the hadiths at the beginning of this chapter, is understood as being among the people of the verse recited therein. We have complete knowledge that when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called those he called from his family at the time of its revelation, there was no one left from among the intended people of his family except for them. If that is the case, it would be impossible for anyone other than them to be included in what was meant with them. What we have mentioned clarifies what we have described. If someone were to say, "The Book of Allah indicates that the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) are the ones intended by that verse," because He said before it in the chapter that contains it: {O Prophet, say to your wives...} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:28) to His statement: {O Women of the Prophet, you are not} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:32) to His saying: {the first ignorance} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:32). All of this could indicate that they are the ones being referred to, as it is all addressed to women, not to men. Then He said, {Indeed, Allah only wants to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's House, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33). Our response to him would be that what followed that statement, up to the end of what He said: {Indeed, Allah only wants to remove the impurity from you}, is a discourse to His wives, and then that was followed by His address to His family with His words, Exalted and Almighty be He: {Indeed, Allah only wants to remove the impurity from you} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33). Thus, it came as an address to men, as He said in it: {to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's House, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33). This is how the address to men and what came before it was, and it was presented in the form of the plural. We also understand that His statement: {Indeed, Allah only wants to remove the impurity from you} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33) is an address to those He intended from among the men, to make it known to them His honor for them and the elevation of their status, by showing that He made the women of their community worthy of the description He gave them, with what is in the recited verses before the address He had with them, Exalted be He, and also what indicates this.

774 - And what Ibn Murzuq narrated to us, saying: Abu Asim al-Nabeel narrated to us from Ubadah, who said: Abu Ja'far, who was Ibn Muslim al-Fazari from the people of Kufa, hadith narrated from him by Abu Nu'aym, who said: Abu Dawud narrated to me. Abu Ja'far, who was Nufay' al-Hamdani the blind, also from the people of Kufa, said: Abu al-Humaira narrated to me, saying: I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) for nine months. Whenever he woke up in the morning, he would go to Fatimah's (peace be upon her) door and say: "Peace be upon you, O People of the House!": {Indeed, Allah only wishes to remove the impurity from you, O People of the Prophet's House, and to purify you with a thorough purification} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33). This also serves as evidence regarding who the people of this verse are. And with Allah is success.
