- .... Al-Mada'ini said: And when Ali (peace be upon him) passed away, Abdullah ibn Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib went out to the people and said: "Indeed, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) has passed away, leaving behind successors. If you wish, their appointed leader will come out to you, and if you do not wish it, then no one is over anyone." The people wept and said: "No, let him come out to us."
So Hasan (peace be upon him) came out and addressed them, saying: "O people, fear God, for we are your leaders and protectors, and we are the Ahl al-Bayt (People of the House) concerning whom Allah, the Exalted, said::{ Allah only wishes to remove the impurity from you, O People of the House, and to make you pure and spotless} (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:33)." So the people pledged allegiance to him.
