3712 - Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Harun al-Faqih narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn Aun narrated to us, saying: Hisham narrated to us, from Dawud from al-Shu'bi, who said: "Many people spoke to us about this verse: {Say, 'I do not ask of you any reward for it except affection in [my] family'} (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23). So, we wrote to Ibn Abbas asking him about this, and Ibn Abbas wrote back: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was in the middle of a household in Quraysh; there was no clan among them except that he had given birth to a child.' Then Allah, Exalted and Mighty be He, said: {Say, 'I do not ask of you any reward for it except affection in [my] family'} (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23), to which you invite me, unless you show me affection through my kinship with you and protect me for it.'" Hisham also informed me that Husayn narrated to me from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) something similar to this. This is a hadith, and they did not narrate it with this addition, and it is صحيح على شرطهما (true on their criteria). Indeed, the hadith of Ikrimah is صحيح على شرط البخاري (true on the criteria of al-Bukhari), and the hadith of Dawud ibn Abi Hind is صحيح على شرط مسلم (true on the criteria of Muslim).

4855 - Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya, the nephew of Tahir al-Aqiqqi al-Hasan, narrated to us, saying: Isma'il ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to me, from my uncle Ali ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad, who said: Al-Husayn ibn Zayd narrated to me, from Umar ibn Ali, from his father Ali ibn al-Hasan, who said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali addressed the people when Ali was killed, and he praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "On this night, a man has been taken who will not be surpassed by those who came before him in deeds, nor will those who come after him ever attain to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) used to give him his banner, and he would fight with Gabriel on his right and Michael on his left, among those who returned, until Allah opened [victory] for him. He left no yellow or white [wealth] on the inhabitants of the earth except for seven hundred dirhams, which remained from his gifts. He intended to use it to buy a servant for his family." Then he said: "O people, whoever knows me has known me, and whoever does not know me, I am al-Hasan ibn Ali, I am the son of the Prophet, I am the son of the Legatee, I am the son of the Herald, I am the son of the Warner, I am the son of the Caller to Allah by His permission, I am the son of the Illuminating Lamp, and I am from the Ahl al-Bayt (People of the House) from whom Gabriel used to descend and ascend from among us. I am from the Ahl al-Bayt whom Allah has removed impurity from and made pure, and I am from the Ahl al-Bayt upon whom Allah has made the love obligatory for every Muslim." Allah, Exalted and Glorified, said to His Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): {“Say, ‘I do not ask of you any reward for it except for the love in my near relatives,’ and whoever performs a good deed, We will increase for him in it a good.”} (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23) So, performing a good deed is our love, the Ahl al-Bayt.
