- .... Ahmad, Abd ibn Humayd, al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Jarir, and Ibn Marduyah narrated from the path of Tawus from Ibn Abbas who said that he was asked about the verse: {except for affection in kinship} (Ash-Shura 42:23) and Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: "The kinship of the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." Ibn Abbas then said, "You are hastening, for the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) did not belong to a tribe in Quraysh except that he had relatives among them," and he continued, "But you should connect what is between me and you of kinship."
- .... Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Tabarani, and Ibn Marduyah narrated from the path of Sa'id ibn Jubayr from Ibn Abbas, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to them, 'I do not ask you for any reward for this except that you show love for me in myself, due to my kinship with you, and preserve the relations of kinship between us.'"
- .... Sa'id ibn Mansur, Ibn Sa'd, Abd ibn Humayd, al-Hakim, who deemed it authentic, Ibn Marduyah, and al-Bayhaqi in al-Dala'il narrated from al-Sha'bi, who said: "Many people spoke to us about this verse: {Say, 'I do not ask you for a reward except for affection in kinship'} (Ash-Shura 42:23) So we wrote to Ibn Abbas asking him, and Ibn Abbas wrote back: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was of intermediary lineage in Quraysh; there was no clan of theirs except that he had relatives born to them." Then Allah said: {Say, 'I do not ask you for a reward'} (Ash-Shura 42:23) for what I invite you to, except affection in kinship, so you should love me for my kinship with you and protect me through it."
