- Abu al-Husayn ibn Bushran al-'Adl informed us in Baghdad, saying: Abu Ali Isma'il ibn Muhammad al-Saffar narrated to us, saying: al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Affan narrated to us, saying: Abu Usamah narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Abd al-Malik ibn Maysarah, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas regarding His saying, Almighty and Glorious be He: {Say, "I do not ask of you any reward for it except love for my near relatives" (Surah ash-Shura 42:23)}. He said: There was no tribe in Quraysh except that the Prophet (peace be upon him) had a relation to them. Then he said: {Say, "I do not ask of you any reward for it except love for my near relatives" (Surah ash-Shura 42:23)} He said: "Do not harm me concerning my relatives." He added that this verse was abrogated by the verse: "Say, Whatever reward I have asked of you is for you," and they both narrated it in the sahih from the hadith of Shu'bah.

- Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Harun al-Faqih narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn Abdul Aziz narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn Aun narrated to us, saying: Hisham narrated to us, saying: Daud narrated to us from al-Sha'bi, who said: "Most people have spoken extensively to us about this verse: {Say, 'I do not ask of you any reward for it except the companionship (mawaddah) in kinship' } (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23) So we wrote to Ibn Abbas, asking him about this, and Ibn Abbas wrote back: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was of intermediary lineage in Quraysh; there was no clan among them except that he was born into it." Then Allah, the Exalted, said: {Say, 'I do not ask of you any reward for it except the companionship (mawaddah) in kinship' } (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23) This means: 'What I am calling you to is only that you do not harm me because of my kinship with you and that you protect me in regard to it.'" Hisham said: And Husayn narrated to me from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas something similar.
