Ibn Sa'd - al-Tabaqat al-Kubra - Mention of Those Who Belonged to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)

- He said: Hishim ibn Bashir narrated to us, from Husayni, from Abu Malik, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was of middle lineage in Quraysh, not from any clan of Quraysh except that they had given him birth. He then said, “So Allah said to him:“Say, ‘I do not ask you for any reward for what I am inviting you to, except that you show me kindness in my family relationship to you and protect me.’”

- He said: Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, Hisham narrated to us, saying: Dawud narrated to us from al-Sha'bi, who said: "They insisted on us regarding this verse: {Say, 'I do not ask of you a reward for it except the affection in kinship}' (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23). So he wrote to Ibn Abbas, and Ibn Abbas replied: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was of the most honored lineage in Quraysh. There was no tribe in Quraysh except that they would have conceived him. Then Allah, blessed and exalted be He, said, 'Say, I do not ask you for a reward for what I am inviting you to, except for the affection you show me for my family and your protection of me in that.'"

- Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Hadhrami narrated to us, and Amr ibn Abi Zai'da narrated to us, saying: I heard Ikrimah say regarding the words of Allah, the Exalted, and Glorious:{Say, "I do not ask of you any reward for it except the companionship in kinship" (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23)}. He said: "There is no tribe from the Quraysh except that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had a birth among them." And he said,"If you do not protect me regarding what I have come with, then protect me for the sake of my kinship."
