- .... Imam Ahmad narrated in al-Manaqib, al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, Ibn Abi Hatim in his Tafsir, and al-Hakim from the chain of al-Shafi'i and al-Wahidi in al-Wasit
from Ibn Abbas, who said: When this verse was revealed, they said, "O Messenger of Allah, who are these relatives of yours whose love has become obligatory upon us?" He replied, "Ali, Fatimah, and their two sons."- .... Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani narrated
from Hasan ibn Ali (peace be upon him) in a lengthy hadith, mentioning his statement: "I am from the Ahl al-Bayt Whom Allah, the Exalted, has made it obligatory to ally with," and he said regarding what was revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): {“Say, 'I do not ask you for it any reward, except the love in kinship'”} (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23).
- .... And in another narration:
"I am from the Ahl al-Bayt whom Allah has made love obligatory upon every Muslim and revealed concerning them: {“Say, 'I do not ask you for it any reward, except the love in kinship, and whoever performs a good deed, We will increase for him therein a good"”} (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23), and performing a good deed is our love, the Ahl al-Bayt.
- ....
And His statement, the Almighty, {“Say, 'I do not ask you for it any reward, except the love in kinship'”} (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23), was one of the distinctions that Allah, the Exalted, granted to His Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). The messengers said to their nations: {“Say, 'Whatever reward I have asked of you is yours. My reward is only with Allah'”} (Surah Saba 34:47). It became obligatory for his nation - as Professor Maltawi says - to fulfill what Allah had commanded them concerning the reward for conveying
that they must love the relatives of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and He designated it as the name of love, which is steadfastness in affection.
