{Say, "I do not ask of you any reward for it except for love in kinship" (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23)}
Volume: (1) - Page Number: (656)
- .... What was narrated to us: Aliyyil ibn Ahmad said: Muhammad ibn Hisham narrated to us, saying: Asim ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Juwair ibn Absar, from al-Duhhak
from Ibn Abbas: {Say, "I do not ask of you any reward for it" (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23)} he said: "I do not ask you for a wage for believing, except that you love me for my kinship and be truthful to me and protect me." And the Ansar did this, defending him with their own lives and children. Then it was abrogated by {Say, 'Whatever reward I have asked of you is yours. My reward is only upon Allah'" (Surah Saba 34:47)} and the view of Ikrimah is that it is not abrogated. He said: They used to maintain family ties, but when the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was sent, they severed him, and he said, "Say, I do not ask you for any reward on it except that you love and protect me for my kinship and not lie to me." In another narration, Qays from al-A'mash, from Sa'id ibn Jubair
from Ibn Abbas: When Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {Say, "I do not ask of you any reward for it except for love in kinship" (Surah Ash-Shura 42:23)},
they said, "O Messenger of Allah, who are these that we should love?" He replied, "Ali, Fatimah, and their children (peace be upon them all)." And the fourth statement is among the most comprehensive and clear.
