17 - Al-Hakim, the father, narrated to me from Abu Hafs Ibn Shahin, who said: Abdullah ibn Sulayman ibn al-Ashtar narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Hatim al-Askari narrated to us, from Bishr ibn Mihran, who said: Muhammad ibn Dinar narrated to us, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, from al-Sha'bi, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: A delegation from the people of Najran came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the al-Aqib and the Sayyid among them. He invited them to Islam, and they said, "We have already converted before you." He said, "You have both lied. If you wish, I can tell you what will prevent you from accepting Islam." They said, "Speak, inform us." He said, "Love of the cross, drinking wine, and eating pork." Then he invited them to a mubahala (a mutual imprecation), and they promised to meet him in the morning. In the morning, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came, taking the hands of Ali, Fatimah, and Hasan and Husayn, peace be upon them, and then he sent a message to them, but they refused to come and acknowledged him by agreeing to pay tribute. The Prophet said, "By the One who sent me with the truth, if they had acted, the valley would have rained fire upon them." Jabir said: Then this verse was revealed: {So say, 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves' (Al-Imran 3:61)}. Al-Sha'bi said: {Our sons (Al-Imran 3:61)} were Hasan and Husayn (peace be upon them), {and our women (Al-Imran 3:61)} was Fatimah (peace be upon her), {and ourselves (Al-Imran 3:61)} was Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him).

173 - A group narrated to us, including Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Suleiman, while I was reading to him, who said: A group of us, including Abu al-Abbas al-Mikali, narrated to us, saying: Abdān al-Ahwazi narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Hatim al-Askari narrated to us, saying: Bishr ibn Mehran narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Dinar narrated to us, saying: Dawud ibn Abi Hind narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: The 'Aqib and the Sayyid came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he invited them to Islam, but they quarrelled and responded to him. He then invited them to perform a mu'alah (curses), and they agreed to meet him the next morning. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went out in the morning, taking the hand of Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, and Husayn. Then he sent for them, but they refused to come and acknowledged to him the payment (of tribute). And it was concerning them that the verse was revealed: {So say, 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves' (Surah Al-Imran 3:61)} Al-Sha'bi said: Jabir said: {and ourselves' (Surah Al-Imran 3:61)} refers to the Messenger of Allah and Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him); {our sons' (Surah Al-Imran 3:61)} refers to Hasan and Husayn (peace be upon them); {our women' (Surah Al-Imran 3:61)} refers to Fatimah (peace be upon her).

174 - Abu Nu'im al-Fadl ibn Dukayn narrated to us, who said: Yahya ibn Zakariya ibn Abi Zaa'ida narrated to us, from his father, from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from Silah ibn Zafer, from Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman, who said: Al-Aqib and al-Sayyid, bishops of Najran, came to invite the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) to mubahala (a mutual curse). Al-Aqib said to al-Sayyid: "If he curses with his companions, he is not a prophet, but if he curses with the people of his house, he is a prophet." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood up and called Ali (peace be upon him) to stand at his right, then he called Hasan (peace be upon him) to stand at his left, then he called Husayn (peace be upon him) to stand at Ali's (peace be upon him) right, and then he called Fatimah (peace be upon her) to stand behind him. Al-Aqib said to al-Sayyid: "Do not curse him, for if you curse him, neither we nor our descendants will succeed." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "If they were to curse me, there would not remain in Najran a single eye that could blink."

175 - Al-Husayn ibn Ahmad narrated to me, who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad narrated to us, who said: Isma'il ibn Abdullah ibn Khalid narrated to us, who said: Ahmad ibn Harb al-Zahid narrated to us, from Salih ibn Abdullah al-Tirmidhi, who said: Muhammad ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, from al-Kalbi, from Abu Salih, from Ibn Abbas, regarding Allah's statement, exalted be He: {Indeed, the example of Isa in the sight of Allah is like that of Adam} (Surah Al-Imran 3:59). He claimed that a delegation from Najran came to Muhammad, the Prophet of Allah, in Medina, consisting of Sayyid, al-Harith, and Abd al-Masih. They said, "O Muhammad, why do you not mention our companion?" He replied, "Who is your companion?" They said, "Isa ibn Maryam. Do you claim he is a servant?" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "He is a servant of Allah and His messenger." They said, "Have you seen or heard of any servant among Allah's creations like him?" The Prophet of Allah turned away from them, and Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended upon him and said: {Indeed, the example of Isa in the sight of Allah is like that of Adam: He created him from dust} (Surah Al-Imran 3:59). So they went to the Prophet of Allah and said, "Did you hear of anyone like our companion?" He replied, "Yes, the Prophet of Allah, Adam. Allah created him from dust and then said to him, 'Be,' and he was." They said, "It is not as you say." Then Allah revealed about him: {So whoever argues with you about him after knowledge has come to you, say, 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves' } (Surah Al-Imran 3:61). They said, "Yes, we will argue with you." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) took the hands of his cousin Ali, Fatimah, and their children Hasan and Husayn, peace be upon them, and said, 'These are our sons, our women, and ourselves.' They intended to challenge him to a form of mutual cursing, but al-Harith said to Abd al-Masih, "What should we do about cursing him? If he is lying, cursing him will not change anything, and if he is telling the truth, we will be destroyed if we curse him." So they made peace with him on two thousand robes each year. It is claimed that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "By the One in whose hand is the life of Muhammad, if they had cursed me, no year would pass without one of them in their presence being destroyed by Allah, the Almighty." There are other routes from al-Kalbi and from Ibn Abbas. Haban ibn Ali al-Anazi, Muhammad ibn Fadl, and Yazid ibn Zuraiq narrated it from al-Kalbi.

- My father narrated to me, saying: I was present in the gathering of Muhammad ibn Aisha in Basra when a man stood up from the middle of the circle and asked: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, who is the best of the companions of the Messenger of Allah?" Abu Bakr replied: "Umar, Uthman, Talha, and al-Zubair, and the rest of the ten, excluding Ali." I said, "Then where is Ali?" He said, "O you, are you asking me about the companions of the Messenger of Allah or about himself?" I said, "Rather, about his companions." He replied: "Ali is himself the Messenger of Allah. Allah, the Exalted, says: {So say, 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves' } (Al-Imran 3:61). How can his companions be like himself?"
