- .... Then he mentioned what is to the effect that Hasan and Husayn fell ill, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) visited them, and the other Arabs visited them as well. They said to Ali: "If only you would make a vow." Ali replied: "If they recover from what they are suffering, I will fast for Allah for three days." Fatimah said the same, and Fiddah (the maidservant) said the same. So Allah bestowed upon them health, and they fasted. Ali went to borrow three sa' (a measure) of barley from Shimon the Kheybari and prepared a sa' from it that night. When they set it before them for dinner, a beggar stood at the door and said: "Feed the needy, and Allah will feed you from the tables of Paradise." Ali ordered them to give the beggar that food, and they went hungry. When the second night came, they prepared the second sa' for them. When it was set before them, a beggar stood and said: "Feed the orphan." They gave him that, and they went hungry. On the third night, he said: "Feed the captive," and they gave him that, so they fasted three days and three nights. Then Allah revealed regarding them: {Has there not come over man} (Surah Al-Insan 76:1) to His statement: {We do not want from you any reward or gratitude} (Surah Al-Insan 76:9) And this narration is considered ghareeb (strange), and some of the imams regard it as mawdu' (fabricated), attributing this to the weakness of its wording, noting that this chapter is Meccan, while Hasan and Husayn were born in Medina. And Allah knows best.

Chapter on Mentioning His Male and Female Slaves, His Servants, Scribes, and Trustworthy Ones

- .... He then narrated with a vague chain of narration from Mahbub ibn Humayd al-Basri, from al-Qasim ibn Bahram, from Layth, from Mujahid from Ibn Abbas regarding Allah's statement, the Exalted: {And they feed, for the love of Him, the poor, the orphan, and the captive (Surah Al-Insan 76:8)}. He then mentioned that, in summary: Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn fell ill, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) visited them, as did the majority of the Arabs. They said to Ali: "If only you made a vow." Ali replied, "If they recover from what is afflicting them, I will fast for Allah for three days." Fatimah said the same, and Fidah said likewise. So, Allah granted them both health, and they fasted. Ali then borrowed three sa'a of barley from Shu'ayb al-Khaybari, and they prepared from it, that night, one sa'a. When they placed it before them for dinner, a beggar stood at the door and said, "Feed the poor, and Allah will feed you from the tables of Paradise." So, Ali ordered them to give that food to him, and they went without eating. When the second night came, they prepared the other sa'a for them. When they placed it between their hands, a beggar stood and said, "Feed the orphan." They gave him that and went without eating. On the third night, he said, "Feed the captive." They gave him that and went without eating for three days and three nights. Then Allah revealed concerning them: {Has there not come upon man (Surah Al-Insan 76:1)} to His statement: {We do not want from you any reward or thanks (Surah Al-Insan 76:9)}. This hadith is considered weak, and some of the imams regard it as fabricated, attributing this to the awkwardness of its wording and noting that this surah is Meccan while Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn were born in Medina. And Allah knows best.

844 - Ata said from Ibn Abbas: This was because Ali ibn Abi Talib (may he be pleased with him) once took it upon himself to water some date palms with a little barley for one night until morning. He then collected the barley and ground a third of it, making something called khazirah for them to eat. When it was fully cooked, a needy person came, and they brought out the food to him. Then they prepared the second third, and when it was fully cooked, an orphan came and asked, and they fed him. Then they prepared the remaining third, and when it was fully cooked, a captive from the polytheists came, and they fed him. They went without eating on that day, and this verse was revealed about them.

- .... And in the narration of al-Ja'fi: Then the maidservant stood up and went to a sa' of barley, from which she baked five loaves, one for each of them. When their first fast was complete, bread, salt, and dry broth were placed before them when a poor man stood at the door and said: Peace be upon you, O people of the House of Muhammad.- in the narration of al-Ja'fi - "I am a poor man from the poor of the nation of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and by God, I am hungry. Feed me, and God will feed you from the tables of Paradise." Ali (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) heard him and began to say:
"O Fatimah, possessor of virtue and certainty, daughter of the best of people, all together.
Do you not see the miserable, needy one standing at the door, filled with yearning,
complaining to God and humbled, complaining to us, hungry and sorrowful?
Every person is bound by their own actions, and the doer of good deeds will be made clear.
Our meeting place is the Garden of Aliyyin, which God has forbidden to the miserly.
For the stingy, there is a humiliating stance, to be cast down by the fire into Sijjin.
His drink will be boiling water and the filth, and whoever does good will find himself well-fed,
and will enter Paradise at any time."
Then Fatimah (peace be upon her and her holy progeny) began to say:
"Your command is, O cousin, obedience to me; there is no meanness or baseness in me.
I will prepare bread for him, feed him, and I will not mind the hour.
I hope that if I satisfy this one in need, I will join the righteous and the gathered."
"And you will have intercession for me in Paradise."
So they fed him food, and they remained that day and night without tasting anything except pure water. When the second day came, she stood up to a sa', ground it, and baked it, and Ali prayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and then came home, placing the food before them. Then an orphan stood at the door and said: "Peace be upon you, O people of the House of Muhammad. An orphan from the children of the emigrants, whose father was martyred on the day of Uhud. Feed me, and God will feed you from the tables of Paradise." Ali heard him and began to say:
"O Fatimah, daughter of the noble lord, daughter of a prophet, not given to baseness.
God has come to the one with the orphan; whoever shows mercy today will be shown mercy.
And he will enter Paradise, sound and whole, for God has forbidden eternity to the miser.
Will he not cross the straight path, stumbling in the fire to the pit?
His drink will be the dregs and boiling water."
Then Fatimah (peace be upon her and her holy progeny) began to say:
"I will feed him today and do not care, and I will prefer God over my children.
They went to bed hungry, and they are my nursing babies; the youngest of them will be killed in battle,
In Karbala, he will be killed by treachery. Woe to the killer, with great burden!
The fire will cast him down to humiliation, and in his hands will be chains and shackles,
A weight that exceeds all bounds."
So they fed him food, and they remained for two days and two nights without tasting anything except pure water. When the third day came, she went to the remaining sa', ground it, and baked it, prayed with Ali and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and then came to the house, placing the food before them. Suddenly, they were met by a captive standing at the door, who said: "Peace be upon you, O people of the House of Muhammad. You capture us and bind us, yet do not feed us. Feed me, for I am a captive of Muhammad." Ali heard him and began to say:
"O Fatimah, daughter of the Prophet Ahmad, daughter of the prophet, lord of the honored.
God named him, and he is Muhammad, adorned by God with a handsome form.
This is a captive of the guided Prophet, weighed down by shackles, confined.
He complains to us of hunger, having lain down; whoever feeds today will find it tomorrow,
With the Almighty, the One, the Unifier. What the sower plants, he will surely harvest.
Give to him; do not make him sit."
Then Fatimah (peace be upon her and her holy progeny) said:
"Nothing remains of what has come except a sa'; my hands have emptied with my arms.
My sons, by God, are hungry; O Lord, do not leave them to perish.
Their father is one inclined to good, showing kindness through original acts.
He has strong arms and a mighty reach, and there is nothing on my head but a veil,
Except a veil woven from narrow cloth."
So they gave him food, and they remained for three days and nights without tasting anything except pure water. When the fourth day came, Allah willed to fulfill the vow. He took the right hand of Hasan and the left hand of Husayn and approached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who were trembling like chicks from extreme hunger. When he saw them, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "O Abu al-Hasan, how severe is what I see distressing about you!" "Let us go to my daughter Fatimah." So they went to her, and she was in her prayer niche, her belly pressed to her back, and her eyes sunken from severe hunger. When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) saw her and recognized the signs of deprivation on her face, he wept and said: "Woe to me! O Allah, the family of Muhammad are dying of hunger!" Then Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and said: "Peace be upon you. Your Lord sends you greetings of peace, O Muhammad. Take this as a gift for you and your family." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) asked: "What should I take, O Gabriel?" So he was given the revelation: {Has there [not] come upon man a time when he was nothing to be mentioned? (Surah al-Insan 76:1)} to his statement: {And they give food in spite of [their] desire for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [saying], "We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We do not want from you or reward or gratitude." (Surah al-Insan 76:8-9)} Al-Tirmidhi, al-Hakim Abu Abdullah in al-Nawadir al-Usool, said: "This is a fabricated and counterfeit hadith. Its narrator has gone to extremes until it resembles the truth to the listeners, for the ignorant of this hadith may bite their lips in regret at its absence, not knowing that the one who performs this act is blameworthy...."

Ibn al-Athir - Asad al-Ghabah fi Ma'rifat al-Sahabah
Book of Women - Letter Fa - 7202: Fiddah the Nubian
Volume: (6) - Page Number: (236/237)
7202 - Fiddah the Nubian was a maidservant of Fatimah al-Zahra, daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Abu Musa wrote to us, saying: Abu al-Fadl Ja'far ibn Abdul-Wahid al-Thaqafi informed us, saying: Abu Othman Isma'il ibn Abdul-Rahman al-Sabuni granted us permission to narrate, saying: Abu Sa'id Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Hamdun and Abu Tahir ibn Khuzaimah both said: Abu Hamid ibn al-Sharafi informed us, saying: Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Khwarizmi, cousin of the Ahnaf ibn Qais, informed us in Shawwal in the year 258 AH. (H) Abu Othman said: Abu al-Qasim al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Nuba informed us, saying: My father narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Khwarizmi narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Hammad al-Maruzi narrated to us, saying: Mahbub ibn Humaid al-Basri narrated to us and he was asked about this hadith by Ruuh ibn Ubadah, saying: Al-Qasim ibn Bahram narrated to us from Layth from Mujahid from Ibn Abbas, who said regarding the words of Allah, the Almighty: {And they give food in spite of their desire for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive. @ We only wish to satisfy you for the sake of Allah. We do not want from you any reward or thanks} (Surah al-Insan 76:8-9). He said: Al-Hasan and al-Husayn fell ill, and their grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), visited them, as did most of the Arabs. They said, "O Abu al-Hasan, if you would vow something for your children." So Ali said, "If they recover from what they are suffering, I will fast for the sake of Allah, the Almighty, for three days in gratitude." Fatimah said the same, and a maidservant named Fiddah the Nubian said, "If my two masters recover, I will fast for the sake of Allah, the Almighty, in gratitude." Both boys were dressed in health, and there was nothing little or big with the family of Muhammad. Then Ali went to Sham'un al-Khaybari and borrowed three sa's of barley from him. He came back with it and placed it down. Fatimah stood up to one sa, ground it, and baked it. Ali prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and then came to the home, placing the food between them when a needy person came to them and stood at the door, saying, "Peace be upon you, O people of the House of Muhammad! I am a needy person from the children of the Muslims. Feed me, and Allah, the Almighty, will feed you at His tables in Paradise." Ali heard him and commanded them to give him the food. They spent their day and night without tasting anything but water. When the second day came, Fatimah stood up to one sa, baked it, and Ali prayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He placed the food between them when an orphan came to them and stood at the door, saying, "Peace be upon you, O people of the House of Muhammad! An orphan is at the door from the children of the emigrants whose parents were martyred. Feed me." They gave him food, and they remained for two days without tasting anything but water. When the third day came, Fatimah stood up to the remaining sa, ground it, and baked it. Ali prayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and placed the food between them when a captive came to them and stood at the door, saying, "Peace be upon you, O people of the House of Prophethood! You capture us and bind us but do not feed us. Feed me, for I am a captive." They gave him food, and they remained for three days and nights without tasting anything but water. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) came to them and saw what they were suffering from hunger. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {Has there not come over man a period of time when he was nothing to be mentioned?} (Surah al-Insan 76:1) to His words: {We do not want from you any reward or thanks} (Surah al-Insan 76:9). Abu Musa narrated this.

1042 - Ahmad ibn al-Walid ibn Ahmad narrated to us, reading from his original copy, who said: My father, Abu al-Abbas al-Wa'izh, narrated to me, saying: Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn al-Fadl al-Nahwi narrated to us in Baghdad, in the al-Rusafah district, by dictation in the year 431 AH, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Zakariya al-Basri narrated to us, saying: Al-Haytham ibn Abdullah al-Rummani narrated to us, from Ali ibn Musa al-Ridha, who said: My father Musa narrated to me, from his father Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father Muhammad, from his father Ali, from his father al-Husayn, from his father Ali ibn Abi Talib, who said: When Hasan and Husayn fell ill, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) visited them. He said to me: O Abu al-Hasan, if you were to make a vow to Allah for your children, I hope Allah would benefit them through it. I said: I will make a vow to Allah that if my beloveds recover from their illness, I will fast for three days. Fatimah also said: And I will make a vow to Allah that if my children recover from their illness, I will fast for three days. Their maid, Fiddah, said: And I too will make a vow to Allah that if my masters recover from their illness, I will fast for three days. So Allah clothed the two boys in health, and they woke up the next day, and there was nothing with the family of Muhammad, neither little nor much. They fasted their day, and Ali went out to the market. There he saw Shim'un the Jew, who was a friend of his, in the market. Shim'un said to him: O Shim'un, give me three sa's of barley and a fleece of wool for Fatimah to spin. Shim'un gave him what he wanted, so he took the barley in his cloak and the fleece under his arm and entered his home. He emptied the barley and tossed aside the fleece. Fatimah then got up to one sa of barley, ground it, kneaded it, and baked five loaves from it. Ali prayed the Maghrib prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and entered his home to break his fast. Fatimah presented to him bread made from barley, along with a little salt and fresh water. As they were about to eat, a beggar stood at the door, saying: Peace be upon you, O people of the House of Muhammad. I am a beggar from the children of Muslims. Feed us, and Allah will feed you from the tables of Paradise. Ali said: O Fatimah, woman of sound judgment and certainty, daughter of the best of all people, do you not see that this wretched beggar has come to us, hungry and sad? He stands at the door, yearning, complaining to Allah, and being humble. Each person is held accountable for their own earnings. Fatimah replied to him, saying: Your matter is with me, O cousin, obedience. There is no meanness in me, nor any humility. Give to him and do not let him wait. We hope for him relief in this famine, and we can join the righteous and the community and enter Paradise through intercession. So they gave him their loaves, and they spent that night without tasting anything except fresh water. When morning came, Fatimah took the other sa of barley, ground it, kneaded it, and baked five loaves, and they fasted their day. Ali prayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) the Maghrib prayer and entered his home to break his fast. Fatimah presented to him bread made from barley, with a little salt and fresh water. As they were about to eat, an orphan stood at the door, saying: Peace be upon you, O people of the House of Muhammad. I am an orphan from the children of Muslims. My father was martyred with the Messenger of Allah on the day of Uhud. Feed us, and Allah will feed you from the tables of Paradise. When the third day came, Fatimah took the third sa of barley, ground it, kneaded it, and baked five loaves from it. So they gave him their loaves, and they spent three days and nights without tasting anything except fresh water. When the fourth day came, Ali, Hasan, and Husayn were trembling as chicks tremble, and Fatimah and Fiddah were with them, unable to walk (thus) from weakness. They went to the Messenger of Allah, who said: My Lord, these are the people of my House, and they are dying of hunger. Have mercy on them, O Lord, and forgive them. My Lord, these are the people of my House. Protect them and do not forget them. Then Jibril descended and said: O Muhammad, Allah sends you peace and says: I have accepted your prayer for them, thanked you for them, and be pleased with them, and I grant you: {Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup whose mixture is camphor} (Surah al-Insan 76:5} to His words: {Indeed, this is for you a reward, and your effort is appreciated} (Surah al-Insan 76:22).

1047 - Isma'il ibn Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Wa'iz narrated to us, who said: Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Ahmad al-Jawhari narrated to us in Merv in the year 666, Mahmud ibn al-Walan narrated to us, who said: Jamil ibn Yazid al-Hanuhardi narrated to us, as did al-Qasim ibn Bahram, from Layth ibn Abi Sulaym, from Mujahid from Ibn Abbas regarding Allah's statement, the Most High: {They fulfill their vows}(Surah al-Insan 76:7) who said: Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn fell ill, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) visited them, as did the uncles of the Arabs. They said, "O Abu al-Hasan, if you were to make a vow for your sons..." Ali replied, "If they recover, I will fast three days in gratitude." Fatimah said the same, and a handmaid of theirs, a Nubian girl named Fidda, said likewise. So, Allah clothed the two boys in wellness, and there was nothing in the household of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), whether little or much. Then Ali went to Shimon al-Khaybari - who was a Jew - and borrowed three sa's of barley from him. He came back with it, and Fatimah got up and took one sa, ground it, and baked it. Ali prayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), then came to the house and placed the food between them. Ali prayed with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), then came to the house and placed the food between them. Just then, an orphan came to them and he continued the hadith at length, and I have shortened it. They said: "O Abu al-Hasan, if you were to make a vow to Allah?" Ali replied: "If Allah heals the two grandchildren of His Prophet Muhammad from the ailment they are suffering, I will fast for three days as a vow to Allah." Fatimah overheard him and said: "And I have a similar vow to Allah." Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn also overheard and said: "O Father, we too have a vow to Allah like what you mentioned." They woke up the next day, and Allah had healed them both, so they fasted. Ali went to a neighbor of theirs and said: "Give us a handful of wool that Fatimah will spin for you, and you can give us whatever you wish in return." So he gave him a handful of wool and three sa's of barley and mentioned the rest of the hadith in detail with poetry, up to the point where he said: Then Jibril descended and said: "O Muhammad, rejoice in what has been revealed to you concerning you and your Ahl al-Bayt: {Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup} (Surah al-Insan 76:5)}" to the end of it. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called Ali and began to recite it to him, and Ali was weeping, saying: "Praise be to Allah who has favored us with this." The narration has been shortened.

They will drink in the Hereafter from a cup of wine whose mixture is from a spring of water called Camphor. Then he described them, saying: {They fulfill their vows} (Surah al-Insan 76:7), meaning they complete the fulfillment of it, and they fear a day whose evil was a widespread torment, severe and overwhelming. This was revealed concerning Ali, Fatimah, Hassan, and Hussain, as they fell ill with a serious illness, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Abu Bakr, and Umar, along with the notable ones of his companions, visited them. He said, "O Ali, you and Fatimah, make a vow that if Allah heals your children, you will fulfill it." And he narrated it in full.

When morning came and he had finished the barley, he ground one-third of it and they made something from it to eat, called harirah. When it was fully cooked, a needy person came, and they brought out the food to him. Then they prepared the remaining third. When it was fully cooked, an orphan came and asked, so they fed him. Then they prepared the last third, and when it was fully cooked, a captive from among the polytheists came and asked, and they fed him, and they spent that day in fasting.
1057 - Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Muhammad al-Jawhari narrated to us, reading from his original in Baghdad, saying: Abu Ubaydullah Muhammad ibn Imran ibn Musa ibn Ubayd al-Marzbani narrated to us, reading to us in Sha'ban in the year 381,
from Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ubaydullah al-Hafiz, reading to us in the partition of Ja'far, who said: Al-Husayn ibn al-Hakim al-Habri narrated to me, saying: Hasan ibn Husayn narrated to us, saying: Hiban ibn Ali narrated to us, from al-Kalbi, from Abu Salih from Ibn Abbas regarding Allah's statement, Almighty and Glorious be He: {And they give food, despite their love for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive (Surah Al-Insan 76:8)} and the following verses: {We only feed you for the sake of Allah. We do not want from you reward or thanks. Indeed, we fear from our Lord a Day of severe displeasure (Surah Al-Insan 76:9-10)} he said: These were revealed concerning Ali ibn Abi Talib, who fed them his dinner and broke his fast on water.

1061 - Abu al-Qasim al-Qurashi and al-Hakim both narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Qasim al-Masurjasi narrated to us, who said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Yunus al-Kudaymi narrated to us, from Hammad ibn Isa al-Juhani, from al-Nahas ibn Qahm, from Qasim ibn Uff al-Shaybani, from Zaid ibn Arqam, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) used to tie a stone to his abdomen from hunger, and he remained a day fasting with nothing with him. He then went to the house of Fatimah, and Hasan and Husayn were crying. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: O Fatimah, feed my two sons. She said: There is nothing in the house except a small amount of food, the blessing of Allah and His Messenger. The Messenger of Allah met them with his saliva until they were satisfied and fell asleep. They had borrowed three small loaves of barley from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and when he broke his fast, he placed them between his hands. Then a beggar came and said: Feed me from what Allah has provided you. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: O Ali, stand up and give it to him. Ali said: So I took one loaf and gave it to him. Then a second beggar came, and the Messenger of Allah said: Stand up, O Ali, and give it to him. So I stood and gave it to him. A third beggar came and said: Stand up, O Ali, and give it to him. So I gave it to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) spent the night hungry, and we spent the night hungry. When morning came, we woke up exhausted, and this verse was revealed: {And they give food, despite their hunger, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive} (Surah al-Insan 76:8). The full hadith is lengthy, but I have summarized it in several places.

- .... Among them are the verses of Surah al-Insan. Allah, the Exalted, said: {And they give food, despite their desire for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the prisoner (Al-Insan 76:8)} .... to His statement: {Gardens and silk (Al-Insan 76:12)}.
- .... Ibn Marduyah narrated from Ibn Abbas: that these verses were revealed concerning Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatima, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).
- .... Al-Wahidi narrated in his al-Tafsir al-Basit, al-Zamakhshari in his Tafsir al-Kashaf, al-Baydaqi in his Tafsir, and al-Fakhr al-Razi in his al-Tafsir al-Kabir: that Ibn Abbas reported that Hasan and Husayn (peace be upon them) fell ill, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) visited them with some people. They said, "O Abu al-Hasan, if you would vow something for your children." So Ali, Fatima, and their maidservant, Fidzah, vowed that if Allah, the Exalted, healed them, they would fast three days. They were healed, but they had nothing with them. Ali borrowed three sa's of barley from Shim'un al-Khaybari, a Jew, and Fatima ground one sa and baked five flatbreads, one for each of them, and placed them before them to break their fast. Then a beggar stood before them and said, "Peace be upon you, O People of Muhammad! I am a needy one from the needy of the Muslims. Feed me, and Allah will feed you from the tables of Paradise." They preferred him and spent the night without tasting anything but water. They woke up fasting. When evening came and they placed the food before them, the same beggar stood before them, and they preferred him again. An enslaved person came to them in the third evening, and they did the same. When they woke up, Ali (peace be upon him) took the hands of Hasan and Husayn and entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). When he saw them trembling like chicks from severe hunger, he said, "What a great sorrow it is for me to see what you are experiencing." He stood up and went with them. He saw Fatima in her prayer niche, her stomach pressed against her back, and her eyes sunken. This saddened him, and Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and said, "Take it, O Muhammad! Allah is with you in your Ahlul Bayt." Then he revealed to her the chapter.

- .... Sheikh al-Hafiz Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Musa ibn Marduyah ibn Furak al-Isbahani narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Salim narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Abi Talib al-Nishapuri narrated to me, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Nu'man ibn Shabl narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Abi Zawq al-Hamdani narrated to us from his father, from al-Dahhak from Ibn Abbas regarding Allah's statement, {And they give food in spite of their love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive} (Surah al-Insan 76:8) said: This verse was revealed about Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) and Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). They remained in fasting until the end of the day when iftar was near. Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood up to prepare something from the flour she had, and she baked it into a dry loaf. There was also a small container with a little butter or oil in it, and she soaked the dry loaf in it, waiting for iftar together with Ali (peace be upon him and her). Then a needy man approached, raising his voice and calling out to the needy, the hungry, and the needy one. He called out at their door. Ali (peace be upon him) said to Fatimah, "Do you have anything to give this needy man?" Fatimah replied, "I prepared a loaf, and there is some butter in the container, which I intended for our iftar." Ali (peace be upon him) said to her, "Give it to this needy, hungry man." Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood with the soaked loaf and handed it to the needy man. He placed it in his embrace and left, turning away from them, eating from what was in his arms. Then a woman came with a small child, calling out: "The orphan, the needy one, who has no father, no mother, and no one!" When the woman saw the orphan, the needy one, eating from his embrace, she approached with the orphan and said: "Servant of Allah, feed this orphan, the needy one, from what you are eating." The needy man replied to her, "By your life, I swear, I would not feed you from the provisions that Allah, the Exalted, has provided for this needy, orphaned one. However, I can direct you to someone who fed me." The woman said, "Then direct me to him." He replied, "To the people of that house you see," and he pointed to it from a distance, "for in that home are a man and a woman who fed me." The woman said: "One who guides to good is like one who does it." The needy man replied: "I hope they will feed your orphan just as they fed me." The woman went with the orphan until she reached Ali and Fatimah's (peace be upon them) door and knocked, calling out: "O people of the house, feed the orphan, the needy one, who has no father, no mother, from the surplus of what Allah has provided you!" Ali (peace be upon him) said to Fatimah, "Do you have anything?" She replied, "I have some flour, and I found a few dates, so I separated them from the pits, squeezed some water into a container, dripped it on the dates, and crushed what little I had of leftover curds, making it into a date mixture. There is nothing else we can use for iftar." Ali said to her, "Prefer this needy orphan, and what is with Allah is better and lasting." Fatimah (peace be upon her) stood with the mixture and poured it into the woman's embrace, and the woman left, feeding the child orphan from what was in her arms. They did not remain far away until a captive from the captives of the polytheists approached, calling out: "The captive, the stranger, the needy, hungry one!" When the captive saw the woman feeding the child from her embrace, he approached her and said: "O servant of Allah, feed me from what you are giving this child." The woman replied, "By your life, I swear, I could not feed you from the provisions that Allah has provided. This orphan, the needy one, but I can direct you to someone who fed me, just as I was directed by someone before you." The captive said: "And one who guides to good is like one who does it." She replied: "To the people of that house you see, where there is a man and a woman who fed a needy asker and this orphan." So the captive went to Ali and Fatimah's (peace be upon them) door and called out loudly: "O people of the house, feed the captive, the stranger, the needy one, from the surplus of what Allah has provided you!" Ali said to Fatimah: "Do you have anything?" She replied: "I have no flour, but I found some leftover date stones, and I separated them from the pits and made some with water, but there is nothing else we can use for iftar." Ali (peace be upon him) said: "Prefer this captive, the needy stranger." Fatimah (peace be upon her) went to the date mixture and handed it to the captive, and they spent the night in extreme hunger, without iftar, dinner, or pre-dawn meal, then they woke up fasting again until Allah, the Exalted, granted them His provision at nightfall. They patiently endured the hunger, and regarding this, it was revealed: {And they give food in spite of their love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive} (Surah al-Insan 76:8), meaning in their deep desire for it, they gave a needy one a dry loaf, an orphan a date mixture, and a captive a date mixture. "We only feed you," they spoke of their inner thoughts, "for the sake of Allah," saying "wanting what is with Allah in reward, we do not want (anything) from you in this world (as a reward)," meaning a reward, "or gratitude," indicating "a praise you may give us." They continued: "Indeed, we fear," expressing their inner thoughts, "from our Lord a day of grimness and anguish." The grimness, they explained, "is the frowning of the face, what is held between the eyes from its terrors and fears, and the anguish is the intensity above them." Allah will protect them from "the evil of that day," and they will meet "with bliss," expressing "the joys of Paradise and serenity," saying "their tranquility from the delight of the eye in Paradise." Allah will reward them, "and recompense them for their patience in hunger, until they preferred food for their iftar over the orphan, the needy, and the captive—a date mixture and a savory dish." They will be reclining in it on sofas, al-arayik, "elaborate thrones woven with pearls, rubies, and emeralds in the highest heavens, covered with canopies." They will not see in them "the sun, which would harm them with its heat or extreme cold," meaning "it will not harm them with its chill," and "the shadows," which are close, "will be near them, and the branches will be within reach," meaning "the fruits will be made accessible to them," allowing them to eat "standing, sitting, reclining, and lying on their backs." None will be able to do so as they are "not able to do so," whether standing or reclining, "and they will be served by immortal boys of pure nature." These boys "will be adorned with garments of gold and silver." It is said, "They are immortal, never having tasted death," for they were created "as servants for the people of Paradise." When you see them, "you would think, from their whiteness and beauty, they are pearls scattered," due to their "abundance." They will resemble "the whiteness and beauty of pearls," and their "abundance will be like scattered pearls."

4 - Al-Ḥamawīnī also narrated it: He reported it from Mujahid from Ibn Abbas regarding the Almighty's statement: {They fulfill their vows and fear a day whose evil will be widespread @ and they give food, despite their desire for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the prisoner (Surah al-Insan 76:7-8)}. He said: Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) fell ill, so their grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), visited them, and some of the Companions visited them. They said, "O Abu Hassān, if you were to vow something for your sons..." Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "If my sons recover from what is afflicting them, I will fast three days for Allah in gratitude." Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said the same, and a servant girl of theirs, a Nubian named Fadja, said the same. The children said, "We will fast three days." Allah granted them both health, but there was nothing, neither little nor much, with them. So Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went to a man from the Jews named Shim'on ibn Habba, and said to him, "Will you give me a small amount of wool that the daughter of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) can spin for you in exchange for three handfuls of barley?" He said, "Yes," and gave it to him. Then Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) got up to her companion, ground it, and baked five flatbreads from it, one for each of them. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed the Maghrib prayer with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and then came to place the food before them when a needy person came to them and stood at the door, saying, "Peace be upon you, O family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). I am a needy person; feed me something." So they gave him the food, and they spent their day and night without tasting anything except plain water. On the second night, an orphan came to them and said, "Feed me." They gave him the food. On the third night, a prisoner came to them and said, "Feed me." They gave him, and they remained for three days and nights without tasting anything except plain water. Then, on the fourth day, when they had fulfilled their vow, Ali took Al-Hasan's hand in his right hand and Al-Husayn's hand in his left (may Allah be pleased with them) and went towards the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and they were trembling like chicks from extreme hunger. When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) saw them, he said, "Go to my daughter Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her)." So they went to her, and she was in her prayer niche, praying, with her stomach pressed to her back from severe hunger, and her eyes had bruised. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) saw her, he said, "O Allah, I seek Your help! The family of Muhammad is dying of hunger." Then Jibril (peace be upon him) descended and conveyed to him, {Has there not been over man a period of time when he was not a thing worth mentioning?} (Surah al-Insan 76:1) to the end of the chapter. This narration is mentioned in the Tafsir al-Baidaawi, Ruh al-Bayan, and al-Musaamara.
