I have left among you two precious things, one of which is greater than the other: the Book of Allah, the Exalted, and my progeny. So look how you will treat me in both of these, for they will not be separated until they return to me at the Pond." Then he said: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is my Patron, and I am the Patron of every believer." He then took the hand of Ali (r) and said: "Whoever I am his Patron, this Ali is his Patron." O Allah, befriend those who befriend him and oppose those who oppose him." And he mentioned the hadith in full. This is a narration that is sahih (authentic) according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, and they did not narrate it in full, and a supporting narration is the hadith of Salamah ibn Kuhayl from Abu al-Tufayl, which is also sahih according to their criteria.

People gathered what was beneath the trees, and then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went for a walk in the evening and prayed, then stood up to deliver a sermon. He praised Allah, extolled Him, mentioned Him, and admonished the people, saying: "Allah wills that you say this." Then he said, 'O people, I am leaving behind two matters among you. If you follow them, you will never go astray. They are the Book of Allah and my Ahl al-Bayt, my progeny.' Then he asked: "Do you know that I am more rightful to the believers than their own selves?" He repeated this three times. They said: "Yes." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Whoever accepts me as his master, Ali is his master," and the Hadith of Buraidah al-Aslami is authentic according to the criteria of the two shaykhs.

He ordered that a rug be spread on that day, a day unlike any other we had experienced, one of the hottest days. He praised Allah and extolled Him, and said: "O people, no prophet has ever been sent except that he lived half the time of the one who came before him. I am nearing the time when I will be called and I must respond and I am leaving among you something that you will not go astray after: the Book of Allah, the Almighty." Then he stood up, took Ali's (ra) hand, and said: "O people, who is more worthy of you than yourselves?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best."
