346 - Yazid ibn Hayyan narrated that he said: I went out, and Husayn ibn Subrah and Umar ibn Muslim, to Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him). When we sat down with him, Husayn said to him: "You have certainly encountered much good, O Zayd: you saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), heard his hadith, fought in battles with him, and prayed behind him. You have surely encountered much good, O Zayd. Tell us, O Zayd, what you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." He said: "O son of my brother, by Allah, my old age has become great, and my memory has become weak, and I have forgotten some of what I used to retain from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). So whatever I narrate to you, accept it, and what I do not, do not burden me with it." Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood one day among us, delivering a sermon at a place called Khumm, between Mecca and Medina. He praised Allah, extolled Him, admonished, and mentioned Him, and then said: 'As for what follows, O people, I am only a human being who is soon to be visited by the Messenger of my Lord, and I will answer him,
and I am leaving among you two precious things: the first of them is the Book of Allah, which contains guidance and light. So hold firmly to the Book of Allah and cling to it.' He urged them regarding the Book of Allah and encouraged them to do so. Then he said: 'And the members of my household; I remind you Allah about the members of my household; I remind you Allah about the members of my household.'" Husayn then asked him: "Who are the members of his household, O Zayd? Are not his wives among the members of his household? Rather, the members of his household are those who are forbidden to receive charity after him." He said: "Who are they?" He replied: "They are the family of Ali, the family of Aqil, the family of Ja'far, and the family of Abbas." Husayn said: "Are all of these forbidden to receive charity?" He said: "Yes." This was narrated by Muslim.
- And in another narration:
"Beware, I am leaving among you two precious things: one of them is the Book of Allah; it is the rope of Allah. Whoever follows it is on guidance, and whoever neglects it is in misguidance."
