Chapter on the Statement Regarding the Ahl al-Bayt of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and His Wives
Volume: (1) - Page Number: (325)
- Abu Muhammad Jinah ibn Nadheer ibn Jinah al-Qadi al-Kufi narrated to us, saying: Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Duhaim narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Ishaq al-Zuhri narrated to us, from Ja'far, meaning Ibn Awn, and Ya'la, from Abu Hayyan at-Tamimi, from Yazid ibn Hayyan, who said: I heard Zayd ibn Arqam say: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood up among us, delivering a sermon. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Indeed, I am just a human being. Soon a messenger from my Lord will come to me, and I will respond to him.
I am leaving among you two weighty things: the first of them is the Book of Allah, which contains guidance and light. Hold fast to the Book of Allah and adhere to it." He urged them regarding the Book of Allah and expressed his desire for it, then said: "And the Ahl al-Bayt of mine, I remind you of Allah regarding the Ahl al-Bayt of mine," three times.
Husayin said to him: "O Zayd, are not his wives also part of his Ahl al-Bayt?" He replied: "Yes, his wives are part of his Ahl al-Bayt, but the Ahl al-Bayt of mine are those who are forbidden to receive alms after him."
He asked: "Who are they?" He replied: "The family of Ali, the family of Ja'far, the family of Abbas, and the family of Aqil."
He said: "All of these are forbidden to receive alms?" He replied: "Yes."
The master, the imam (may Allah be pleased with him and grant him peace), said: Zayd ibn Arqam made it clear that his wives are part of his Ahl al-Bayt. The term Ahl al-Bayt for women is a precise one and also encompasses the family (Aal), while the term family (Aal) refers to anyone forbidden to receive alms from the descendants of Hashim and the descendants of al-Muttalib, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): "Almsgiving is not lawful for Muhammad or the family of Muhammad," and his granting them the fifth (khums), which is a substitute for almsgiving, to the Banu Hashim and the Banu al-Muttalib. He said: "Indeed, the Banu Hashim and the Banu al-Muttalib are one and the same."
The term "wives" could refer to his wives only in the sense of resemblance by lineage. Zayd intended to specify the family from among the Ahl al-Bayt in his mention, and the wording of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in his will concerning them is general, encompassing both the family and the wives. We have been commanded to pray for all of them."
