1608 - As for what follows, O you people present or perhaps more generally, I am only a human being who is soon to be visited by the Messenger of my Lord, meaning the Angel of Death, and I will respond, that is, die. He alluded to this with the term "respond," implying that it is appropriate to receive him with acceptance, as if he is responding to it by his own choice. And I am leaving among you two weighty matters, which are termed as such due to their great importance and honor. The first of them is the Book of Allah, which He has placed before you due to its right to be given precedence, offering guidance from misguidance and light from darkness. Whoever holds fast to it and acts upon it will be on guidance, and whoever disregards it will go astray, that is, miss the path of happiness and perish in the arenas of confusion and misery. So hold fast to the Book of Allah and cling to it, for it is the means that leads to the highest ranks and eternal happiness. The second are the People of My House. They are those from whom charity is forbidden, being among His close relatives.

2631 - "I am leaving among you, after my death, two successors: one of them is greater than the other." It was added in one narration that instead of two successors, he referred to two heavy things, naming them thus due to their significant stature: the Book of Allah, the Qur'an, which is a stretched rope between heaven and earth." It was said that he meant by this his covenant, and others said it is the means to attain His pleasure, "and my family," a detailed explanation after a general one, "instead of or as a clarification," and they are the People of the Cloak, from whom Allah removed impurity and purified them completely. It is also said that they are those upon whom almsgiving (zakat) is forbidden. Al-Qurtubi preferred this interpretation, meaning that if you adhere to the commands of His Book and abstain from its prohibitions, and you are guided by the guidance of my family and follow their example, you will be rightly guided and not go astray." Al-Qurtubi said: "This is a will, and this significant emphasis implies the obligation of respecting, fulfilling the promises to, venerating, and loving them—an obligation of confirmed duties for which no one has an excuse to neglect." This is alongside what is known of their special status with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and that they are part of him, as they are his roots from which he grew and his branches that grew from him.
