9 - And in the virtues (manaqib) from Abdullah ibn al-Hasan al-Muthanna ibn al-Hasan al-Mujtabi ibn Ali al-Murtadha (peace be upon them) from his father, from his grandfather al-Hasan al-Sabti, who said: My grandfather (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) addressed the people one day and said: "Praise be to Allah and may He be exalted." O assembly of people, I am being called, and I will respond, and I am leaving among you the two precious things: the Book of Allah and my Ahlul Bayt, my family. If you hold fast to both of them, you will not go astray, and they will not separate until they come to me at the cistern (hawd). Therefore, learn from them and do not teach them, for they are more knowledgeable than you, and the earth will never be devoid of them; if it were, it would sink with its inhabitants."

5 - Also: From Sulaym ibn Qays al-Hilali, who said: While I was with Habayish ibn al-Mu'tamir in Mecca, Abu Dharr stood up and took hold of the latch of the Kaaba's door and said: "Whoever knows me, knows me, and whoever does not know me, I am Junayd ibn Junadah, Abu Dharr.... And he says: 'I am leaving amongst you something that if you hold onto it, you will not go astray: the Book of Allah and my Itirati, and they will not separate until they return to me at the cistern.'"

7 - In Sahih Muslim: Zuhair ibn Harb and Shu'ja ibn Makhlad both narrated to me from Ibn Uyayna, who said: Zuhair narrated to me: Isma'il ibn Ibrahim narrated to me, who said: Abu Hayyan narrated to me, who said: Yazid ibn Hayyan narrated to me, that I went to Zayd ibn Arqam along with Husayn ibn Subra and Umar ibn Muslim. When we sat down with him, Husayn said to Zayd: "You have certainly encountered much good, Zayd. You saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), heard his hadith, fought in battles with him, and prayed behind him. Tell us, Zayd, what you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." He replied: "O son of my brother, by Allah, my age is advanced, my memory has faded, and I have forgotten some of what I used to remember from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). So whatever I narrate to you, accept it, and what I do not, do not burden me with it." Then he said: "One day, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood up among us to deliver a sermon at a place called Khum, between Mecca and Medina. He praised Allah, exalted Him, and admonished and reminded us, then said: 'Afterward, O people, I am only a human being. Soon, a messenger from my Lord will come to me, and I will respond, and I am leaving among you the two weighty things: the first of them is the Book of Allah, which contains guidance and light. Hold firmly to the Book of Allah and cling to it.'" He encouraged [us] regarding the Book of Allah and expressed its importance, then said: "And my family, I remind you of Allah concerning my family. I remind you of Allah concerning my family. I remind you of Allah concerning my family." Husayn then said to him: "Who are his family, Zayd? Are not his wives among his family?" He replied: "His wives are part of his family, but the people of his family are those from whom charity is forbidden after him." Husayn asked: "Who are they?" He replied: "They are the family of Ali, the family of Aqil, the family of Ja'far, and the family of Abbas." I said: "Are all of these not allowed to accept charity?" He said: "Yes."

9 - Muslim: Narrated to us Muhammad ibn Bakr ibn al-Rayan, who said: Hossan ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, from Sa'id, who was ibn Masruq, from Yazid ibn Hayyan, from Zayd ibn Arqam, who said: We entered upon him and said: "You have seen something good; you accompanied the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and prayed behind him...." And he continued the hadith similarly to the hadith of Abu Hayyan except that he said: "Beware, I am leaving among you two precious things: one of them is the Book of Allah (Almighty and Glorious be He), which is the cord of Allah. Whoever clings to it will be guided, and whoever ignores it will be in error, and my family, my Ahlul Bayt." And in it, we said: "Are his family not his wives?" He replied: "Not at all, by Allah! A woman may be with a man for a time, then he divorces her, and she returns to her father and her people. The family of his (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is his root and his close relatives who were forbidden to receive charity after him."

You are soon to be brought to the Pond, and I will ask you about the two precious things. How did you leave me regarding them?" A man from the Emigrants stood up and said: "What are the two precious things?" He replied: "The larger of them is the Book of Allah, the cause of one end in the Hand of Allah and the cause of the other end in your hands. The smaller is my Ahlul Bayt. They all said: We bear witness that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said this.

- .... And he (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, clarifying through his family: "I am leaving among you two precious things, one of which is greater than the other: the Book of Allah, a rope stretched from the heavens to the earth, and my family, my Ahlulbayt. The Gentile, All-Knowing Prophet has informed me that they will never separate until they both return to me at the cistern (Kawthar)." If they were like others, Umar would not have said when he sought to marry off his daughter to Ali: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'Every bond or lineage will be severed on the Day of Resurrection, except for my bond and my lineage.'"

187 - Then, after this: O people, I am but a human being who is about to be called away by my Lord, and I will respond and I am leaving among you two precious things: the first of them is the Book of Allah, which contains guidance and light. Whoever holds fast to it and follows it will be on guidance, and whoever neglects it will go astray. So hold fast to the Book of Allah, the Almighty, and cling to it. And I remind you of Allah concerning my Family; I remind you of Allah concerning my Family; I remind you of Allah concerning my Family. This is narrated by Ahmad, Abd ibn Humayd, and Muslim from Zayd ibn Arqam.

314 - And from Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) marfu'an, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "I am leaving among you two precious things, and if you hold fast to them, you will not go astray after me. One of them is greater than the other: the Book of Allah, Almighty and Majestic be He, a rope extended from the heaven to the earth, and my Ahlulbayt (peace be upon them). They will not separate until they return to me at the Pond, so see how you will fare in them." This was narrated by al-Tirmidhi.
315 - And from him, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood among us, delivering a sermon. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Now, O people, I am but a human being. Soon a messenger from my Lord, Almighty and Majestic be He, will come to me, and I will respond to him, leaving among you two precious things. The first of them is the Book of Allah, containing guidance and light. So hold fast to the Book of Allah, take it seriously, encourage others regarding it, and show them its importance." He added, "And my Ahlulbayt, I remind you of Allah concerning my Ahlulbayt three times." Then Zayd was asked, "Who are his Ahlulbayt?" He replied: "The Ahlulbayt of him upon whom almsgiving is prohibited after him are: the family of Ali, the family of Ja'far, the family of Aqil, and the family of Abbas." It was said, "Are all of these prohibited from receiving almsgiving?" He said, "Yes." This was narrated by Muslim.

316 - And from Abu Sa'id, narrated as a marfu' (elevated saying of the Prophet), that he said: "I am near to being summoned, and I will respond, and I am leaving among you the two precious things, the Book of Allah and my Troupe (Ahl al-Bayt). The Book of Allah is a stretched rope from the heavens to the earth, and my Troupe (Ahl al-Bayt) are my family. And the All-Subtle, All-Aware has informed me that they will not part until they come to me at the Pond (al-Hawd)." So look at what you will be left with after me." Ahmad narrated it in his Musnad.

200 - Muslim's narration from Zaid ibn Arqam, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood among us delivering a sermon. He praised and thanked Allah, then said: "Afterwards .... O people, I am only a human being like you. Soon a Messenger from my Lord, Mighty and Majestic be He, will come to me, and I will answer him. And I am leaving among you two precious things: the first of them is the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic be He. In it is guidance and light, so hold fast to the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic be He. Take it seriously, encourage others regarding it, and show them its importance." Then he said: "And my family, I remind you of Allah regarding my family three times."" Zaid was asked, "Are not his wives part of his family?" He replied, "Yes, his wives are part of his family, but the members of his family are those from whom charity is forbidden." He was asked, "Who are they?" He said, "They are the family of Ali, the family of Ja'far, the family of Aqil, and the family of Abbas." It was asked, "Are all these not allowed to receive charity?" He answered, "Yes."

201 - Al-Tirmidhī narrated and said it is Hasan Gharib: "He (peace be upon him) said, 'I am leaving among you something that if you hold onto, you will not go astray after me. One is greater than the other: the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic be He) is a rope stretched from the heavens to the earth, and my ʿitrāh, the people of my household. They will not separate until they come to me at the Pool (of al-Kawthar).'" So look at how you will be left to me regarding them both.
202 - Aḥmad narrated something similar in his Musnad, with the wording: "I am close to being called away, so I will respond, and I am leaving among you the two heavyWeights: the Book of Allah, a rope stretched from the heavens to the earth, and my ʿitrāh, the people of my household. And the All-Subtle, the All-Aware, has informed me that they will not separate until they come to me at the Pool, so look at how you will be left to me regarding them." Its chain is acceptable, and in another narration, it is mentioned that this occurred during the Farewell Pilgrimage... on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm, as in the hadith of Muslim from Zayd ibn Arqam.
203 - And in a reliable narration: "I am leaving among you two things; you will not go astray if you follow them, and they are: the Book of Allah and my ʿitrāh, the people of my household." Al-Ṭabarānī added: "I asked for this for both of them, so do not precede them, or you will be destroyed; do not fall short of them, or you will be destroyed; and do not teach them, for they are more knowledgeable than you." Know that the hadith on holding onto the two heavyWeights has many chains narrated from more than twenty companions, and in some of those chains, it is stated that he said this during the Farewell Pilgrimage in ʿArafah, in another that he mentioned it at Ghadīr Khumm, in another that he said it in Medina during his illness while his chamber was full of his companions, in a final one that he spoke it in a sermon that was one of his last sermons during his illness, and another that it was when he stood up to deliver a sermon after returning from Ṭāʾif. There is no conflict, as there is no reason he would not have repeated this to them in those occasions and others, emphasizing the importance of the Glorious Book and the Pure ʿitrāh.

14 - And in al-Manāqib from Jaʿfar al-Sādiq, from his father Muḥammad al-Bāqir, who said: I went to Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh and said to him: Tell me about the Farewell Pilgrimage. So he mentioned a lengthy hadith then said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: I am leaving among you two precious things. If you hold fast to both of them, you will not go astray after me: the Book of Allah and my Ītrah, my Ahl al-Bayt. And they will not be separated until they return to me at the Pond. Then he said: O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness! O Allah, bear witness! three times. Imam Ali al-Riḍa also narrated this from his forefathers (peace be upon them).
