- .... Al-Tahdhib: And it is narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that he said in the last year of his life: "I am leaving among you the two weighty things, the Book of Allah and my Sunnah." So he made them the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and his Sunnah. It has been mentioned earlier regarding the Sunnah. Tha'alab said: They are called weighty things because adhering to both of them is heavy, and acting according to them is burdensome.

Ibn Manzur - Lisān al-ʿArab - Letter ʿAyn - ʿItrah
Volume: (10) - Hadith Number: (25)

- .... And in the hadith of Zayd ibn Thābit, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "I am leaving behind me in you two precious things, the Book of Allah and my ʿitrah, and they will not separate until they return to me at the Pond." And he said: Muhammad ibn Isḥaq said, "And this is a sound hadith," and Zayd ibn Arqam and Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī also raised it similarly.
- .... And in some versions: "I am leaving behind in you the two precious things, the Book of Allah and my ʿitrah, the people of my Household." Thus, he equated the ʿitrah with the people of the House. Abū ʾUbayd and others said: A man's ʿitrah, family, and clan are his closest relatives. Ibn al-Atheer stated: A man's ʿitrah refers to his nearest relatives. Ibn al-ʿArabī said: The ʿitrah is the children and descendants of a man, his offspring from his loins. He added that the ʿitrah of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is the children of Fatimah al-Batūl (peace be upon her). It was narrated from Abū Saʿīd that he said: "The ʿitrah is the trunk of the tree." He also said that the ʿitrah of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) includes the children of ʿAbd al-Muṭtalib. It was said that his ʿitrah consists of his close family members, and those who are considered close and distant from them. It was also said that a man's ʿitrah includes his relatives from his uncle's children. This is reflected in the hadith of Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) when he said to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) while the Prophet was consulting his companions about the captives of Badr: "Your ʿitrah and your people," intending by ʿitrah, al-ʿAbbās and those among the Banī Hāshim with him, and by people, the Quraysh. The widely known and accepted view is that his ʿitrah is the people of his Household, namely, those upon whom zakāt (alms) and obligatory charity are prohibited and who are the near ones entitled to the fifth of the spoils, as mentioned in Surah al-Anfāl.
