3772 - Hassan ibn Musa narrated to us, saying: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from al-Mujalid, from al-Sha'bi, from Masruk, who said: We were sitting with Abdullah ibn Mas'ud while he was reciting the Quran to us, and a man said to him: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, did you ask the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) how many caliphs this ummah would have? Abdullah ibn Mas'ud replied: No one has asked me about this since I arrived in Iraq before you. Then he said: Yes, and we did ask the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he said: there will be twelve, like the number of the leaders among the Children of Israel.

He wrote back to me: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on a Friday, in the evening of the stoning of the Aslami, saying: "The religion will remain established until the Hour comes, or there will be twelve caliphs over you, all of them from Quraysh." He continued: My father was closer to the mount of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) than I was, so I said: "O father, what is it that is unclear to me from the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" He said: "He is saying that all of them are from Quraysh." He said: So I bear witness to my father's understanding, as he said: "All of them are from Quraysh."

20458 - Isma'il ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, from Ibn Aun, from al-Sha'bi, from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said: I was with my father or my son, he said, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was mentioned. He said, "This matter will remain strong and formidable, and they will be supported against those who oppose them, until twelve caliphs have passed." Then he spoke a word that I could not hear, and I said to my father or my son, "What was the word that I could not hear?" He replied, "They are all from Quraysh."

20545 - 'Umar ibn Ubayd Abu Hafs narrated to us, from Samak, from Jabir, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: "There will be twelve commanders after me." He then spoke, but what he said became unclear to me. So, I asked some of the people, or one near me, what he said. They replied: "All of them will be from Quraysh."
