5031 - Shayban ibn Furukh narrated to us, who said: Hammad, meaning Ibn Zayd, narrated to us from Mujalid, from al-Shu'bi, from Masruq, who said: We were sitting with Abdullah after the Maghrib prayer, and he was reciting the Quran to us, when a man asked him: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, did you ask the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny):
How many caliphs will this ummah have?" Abdullah ibn Mas'ud replied: "No one has asked me about this since I came to Iraq before you." He then said: "Yes, and I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny),
and he said: Twelve, like the leaders of the Children of Israel."
