- .... and make him a leader of a mighty nation. This is also a glad tiding of this great Ummah, and these twelve leaders are the twelve rightly-guided caliphs who were prophesied in the narration of Abd al-Malik ibn Umair from Jabir ibn Samurah from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who said: "There will be twelve princes." Then he said a word that I did not understand, so I asked my father: What did he say? He replied, "They are all from Quraysh." Both narrated it in the Sahihayn.

- .... It is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari from the narration of Shu'bah and in Sahih Muslim from the narration of Sufyan ibn Uyaina, both of them from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: "There will be twelve caliphs." Then he said a word that I did not hear, so I said to my father: "What did he say?" He replied: "They will all be from Quraysh."
- .... A similar report has been narrated from Abdullah ibn Umar, Hudhayfah, Ibn Abbas, and Ka'b al-Ahbar, in statements attributed to them. Abu Dawud said: 'Amr ibn Uthman narrated to us, saying: Marwan ibn Muawiya narrated to us from Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid, from his father from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: "This affair will remain established until there are twelve caliphs or commanders over them, all of whom the nation will unite upon." I heard the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) words, but I did not understand them, so I said to my father: "What is he saying?" He replied: "He is saying they will all be from Quraysh."

- .... It is established in the two Sahihs from the narration of Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr from Jabir ibn Sumra, from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who said: "There will be twelve leaders, all of them from Quraysh." Abu Dawud also narrated it from another route from Jabir ibn Sumra, who said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'This religion will continue to stand firm until there are twelve leaders.'" In one narration: "This community will continue to have a straightened order, manifest over its enemies, until twelve leaders pass away, all of them from Quraysh." They asked, "What will happen after them?" He said, "There will be turmoil."

- .... And Imam Ahmad said: Al-Hasan ibn Musa narrated to us, narrating from Hammad ibn Zayd, from Mujalid, from al-Shabi, from Masruq, who said: We were sitting with Abdullah ibn Mas'ud as he was reciting the Quran to us, when a man said to him: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, did you ask the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) how many will rule this Ummah as Khalifahs? Abdullah replied: No one has asked me about this since I came to Iraq before you. Then he said: Yes, and we did ask the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he said: Twelve, like the number of the leaders among the Children of Israel. This is a strange narration from this angle.
- .... And the essence of this hadith is established in the two Sahihs from the narration of Jabir ibn Samurah, who said: I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: "The affairs of the people will continue as long as they are ruled by twelve men." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) spoke a word that was unclear to me, so I asked what the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said. He replied: "All of them are from Quraysh."
