4738 - Al-Hasan ibn Ya'qub and Ibrahim ibn Ismat al-Adalan both said: Al-Sari ibn Khuzaymah narrated to us, saying: Ma'li ibn Rashid narrated to us, saying: Wahib ibn Khalid narrated to us, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father, from Ali ibn al-Husayn, that Umar ibn al-Khattab (r) proposed marriage to Ali (r) for Umm Kulthum, saying: "Marry her to me." Ali replied: "I am intending her for my nephew, Abdullah ibn Ja'far." Umar said: "Marry her to me, for by Allah, there is no one among the people who is observing her matter as closely as I am." So Ali married her to him. Then Umar went to the emigrants and said: "Will you not congratulate me?" They said: "With whom, O Commander of the Faithful?" He replied: "With Umm Kulthum, the daughter of Ali and Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (p)."
"I heard the Messenger of Allah (p) say: 'Every kinship and connection will be severed on the Day of Resurrection, except for that which is from my kinship and connection.'" So I wanted there to be a bond between me and the Messenger of Allah (p). This is a hadith with a sound chain of narration, and they did not narrate it.
