Abu Bakr attacks the Prophet

Hadith No: 1

Narrated Ibn Abi Mulaika:

The two righteous persons were about to be ruined. They were Abu Bakr and `Umar who raised their voices in the presence of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) when a mission from Bani Tamim came to him. One of the two recommended Al-Aqra' bin Habeas, the brother of Bani Mujashi (to be their governor) while the other recommended somebody else. (Nafi`, the sub-narrator said, I do not remember his name). Abu Bakr said to `Umar, "You wanted nothing but to oppose me!" `Umar said, "I did not intend to oppose you." Their voices grew loud in that argument, so Allah revealed: 'O you who believe! Raise not your voices above the voice of the Prophet.' (49.2) Ibn Az-Zubair said, "Since the revelation of this Verse, `Umar used to speak in such a low tone that the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) had to ask him to repeat his statements." But Ibn Az-Zubair did not mention the same about his (maternal) grandfather (i.e. Abu Bakr).

Narrated Ibn Abi Mulaika:

Once the two righteous men, i.e., Abu Bakr and `Umar were on the verge of destruction (and that was because): When the delegate of Bani Tamim came to the Prophet, one of them (either Abu Bakr or `Umar) recommended Al-Aqra' bin H`Abis at-Tamimi Al-Hanzali, the brother of Bani Majashi (to be appointed as their chief), while the other recommended somebody else. Abu Bakr said to `Umar, "You intended only to oppose me." `Umar said, "I did not intend to oppose you!" Then their voices grew louder in front of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) whereupon there was revealed: 'O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet..a great reward.' (49.2-3) Ibn Az-Zubair said, 'Thence forward when `Umar talked to the Prophet, he would talk like one who whispered a secret and would even fail to make the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) hear him, in which case the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) would ask him (to repeat his words).

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Az-Zubair:

"Al-Aqra' bin Habis arrived to meet the Prophet (s.a.w.a.)" - he said - "so Abu Bakr said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Appoint him over his people.' 'Umar said: 'Do not appoint him O Messenger of Allah!' They continued talking before the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) until they raised their voices. Abu Bakr said to 'Umar: 'You only wanted to contradict me.' So ['Umar] said: 'I did not want to contradict you.'" He said: "So this Ayah was revealed: 'O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet (49:2).'" He said: "After that, when 'Umar spoke before the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), his speech could not be heard until he told him he could not understand him." He (one of the narrators) said: "And Ibn Az-Zubair did not mention his grandfather" meaning Abu Bakr.

15700 - Waki' narrated to us, saying: Nafi' ibn Umar al-Jumahi narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Mulayka, who said: The two good men, Abu Bakr and Umar, were almost destroyed when the delegation of Banu Tamim came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). One of them was signaling with his hand towards al-Aqra' ibn Habas al-Hanzhali, the brother of Banu Mujashi', while the other was indicating towards someone else. Abu Bakr said to Umar: "I only intended to differ with you." Umar replied: "I did not intend to differ with you." Their voices were raised in front of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and then the following was revealed: {O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:2) until His statement: {is great} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:3). Ibn Abi Mulayka said, Ibn al-Zubayr narrated that Umar, after that, did not mention this incident regarding his father, meaning Abu Bakr, when he narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny); he would relate it in a manner similar to that of a close confidant, not having heard it until he was asked for clarification.

- .... His statement, Almighty Allah said: {O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:2). Al-Bukhari and at-Tirmidhi narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, who said: Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr narrated to me that al-Aqra' ibn Habib came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, appoint him over his people." Umar said, "Do not appoint him, O Messenger of Allah." They both spoke in the presence of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) until their voices were raised. Then Abu Bakr said to Umar, "You only wanted to oppose me." Umar replied, "I did not want to oppose you." Then this verse was revealed: {O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:2). Ibn Abi Mulaykah continued: After that, if Umar spoke in the presence of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), his words would not be heard until he was asked to clarify. He also noted that Ibn az-Zubayr did not mention his grandfather, meaning Abu Bakr. He said, "This is a strange and good narration."
- .... I said: It is Al-Bukhari who narrated from Ibn Abi Mulaykah that the two good ones were on the verge of disaster, Abu Bakr and Umar, raising their voices in the presence of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) when a delegation from Banu Tamim came to him. One of them gestured towards al-Aqra' ibn Habib, the brother of Banu Mujashi', and the other towards another man. Nafi' said, "I do not remember his name." Then Abu Bakr said to Umar, "You only wanted to oppose me." Umar replied, "I did not want to oppose you." Their voices were raised in this matter, so Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:2). Ibn az-Zubayr concluded, "After this verse, Umar would not hear the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) until he sought clarification," and he did not mention this about his father, meaning Abu Bakr al-Siddiq.

- .... Al-Bukhari said: Yusrata ibn Safwan al-Lakhmi narrated to us, saying: Nafi ibn Umar narrated to us from Ibn Abi Miliaka, who said: The two good ones, Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), were about to perish. They raised their voices in the presence of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) when a delegation from Banu Tamim came to him. One of them gestured towards al-Aqra ibn Habib (may Allah be pleased with him), the brother of Banu Mujashii, and the other gestured towards another man. Nafi said: I do not remember his name. Abu Bakr said to Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): "You only wanted to contradict me." Umar replied: "I did not intend to contradict you," and their voices were raised over this, so Allah, the Exalted, revealed: {O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, or be audibly voicing him like one of you does to another, lest your deeds become invalid while you perceive not} (Al-Hujurat 49:2). Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After this verse, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) would not hear the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) without seeking clarification, and he did not mention this regarding his father, meaning Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was uniquely associated with this, unlike Muslim.
