- Abu Abd Allah al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar narrated to us, saying: Yunus ibn Bukayr narrated to us, saying: Ibn Ishaq said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stayed in what remained of Ramadan and in Shawwal and Dhu al-Qi'dah after his return from Tabuk, and then he sent Abu Bakr as an commander over the Hajj in the ninth year to establish the pilgrimage for the Muslims, while the people from the midst of polytheism remained in their places of pilgrimage. Abu Bakr and those with him from the Muslims set out, and Surah Bara'ah was revealed, annulling what was between the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and the polytheists of the covenant they had been under. Ibn Ishaq said: Ali ibn Abi Talib set out on the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), al-Udba, until he caught up with Abu Bakr on the way. When Abu Bakr al-Siddiq saw him, he said, "Amir or commanded?" to which he replied, "No, rather commanded." Then they both continued, and Abu Bakr remained for the people to perform their pilgrimage until when the Day of Eid al-Adha came, Ali ibn Abi Talib said at the Jamrah: So he (Abu Bakr) announced to the people what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had instructed him to do, saying: "O people, no one who disbelieves will enter Paradise, nor will any polytheist perform Hajj after this year, nor will anyone circumambulate the House in a state of nakedness. And whoever has a covenant with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) has it until its specified time." And the grace period for people is four months from the day they are notified to return to their places of safety in their lands, and then there will be no covenant or protection, except for anyone who has a covenant with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny); it will be honored until its time." And what Muhammad ibn Ishaq mentioned in the Maghazis is found in the connected narrations.

18821 - Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz, Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi, Abu Muhammad ibn Abi Hamid al-Muqri, and Abu Sadiq Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Ittar said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Yaqub narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Marzuq narrated to us, saying: Uthman ibn Umar narrated to us, saying: Shu'bah narrated to us, from al-Mughira, from al-Sha'bi from al-Muhrir ibn Abi Huraira, from his father, who said: I was with Ali (ra) when the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him with al-Bara'ah to the people of Mecca. He said: I kept calling until my voice became hoarse, and it was said to him: What were you calling with? He replied: We were commanded to announce that no one shall enter Paradise except a believer and one who has a covenant with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who will be granted a reprieve of four months. When the months have passed, then Allah is free from the polytheists and His Messenger, and no one may circumambulate the House in the nude, nor perform pilgrimage after this year who is a polytheist. This was also mentioned in the narration of Zayd ibn Yath'i from Ali (may peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in this hadith, and whoever has a covenant, his covenant is until its specified time, and those who do not have a covenant have four months. Al-Shafi'i (may peace be upon him) said: And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) allotted Safwan ibn Umayyah a period of four months after the conquest of Mecca. The Sheikh said: This has been mentioned in the narration of Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri in the Book of Marriage.
