Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani - Fath al-Bari Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari - Book of the Interpretation of the Quran - Surah Bara'ah (Repentance): 3
Chapter on His Statement: {And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the Greater Hajj, that Allah is disassociated from the polytheists, and so is His Messenger}
Volume: (8) - Page Number: (240)
- .... His statement: (And that no polytheist should perform Hajj after this year): Ahmad narrated with a good chain from Anas that the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent [Surah] Bara'ah with Abu Bakr, and when he reached Dhul-Hulaifah, he said, "None should convey it except me or a man from my household," so he sent it with Ali. Al-Tirmidhi said: This is good and strange.
- And it was mentioned in the narration of Ya'la ibn Umayyah in Ahmad that when ten verses from Bara'ah were revealed, the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent them with Abu Bakr to recite to the people of Mecca, then called me and said, "Catch up with Abu Bakr, and wherever you meet him, take the book from him." Abu Bakr returned and said, "O Messenger of Allah, has something been revealed about this?" He replied, "No, except that none will convey it to you except Gabriel." He continued, "None will convey what you need except you or a man from you."

14696 - About 'Amr ibn Maymun - meaning al-Awdi - who said: I was sitting with Ibn Abbas when nine men came to him and said: "O Ibn Abbas, either you stand with us or these ones will be alone with us." Ibn Abbas replied, "I will stand with you," and he was in good health that day, before he became blind.... He then said: Then he brought forward Safiyya, the daughter of Huyayy, and sent someone with a chapter from Surah at-Tawbah, and sent Ali (ra) behind him to take it from him, saying: 'No one will take it except a man from me, and I am from him.'.... Ahmad and al-Tabarani narrated this in al-Kabeer and al-Awsat with brevity, and the men of Ahmad are reliable, except for Abi Balj al-Fazari, who is trustworthy but has some leniency in him.

So those who were present leaned forward in anticipation. He then said, "Where is Ali?" So he called him, and he was suffering from eye inflammation, barely able to see. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then breathed into his eyes and shook the flag three times, handing it to him. He came with Safiyyah bint Huyyi and he sent Abu Bakr with Surah At-Tawbah, and he sent Ali after him, and Ali took it from him. Then Abu Bakr said to Ali, "By Allah and His Messenger!" Ali replied, "No, but only a man who is from me and I am from him will take it."

63 - Ahmad ibn Shaddad al-Tirmidhi narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn Qadim narrated to us, from Israel, from Abdullah ibn Sharīk, from al-Harith ibn Malik, who said: I came to Mecca and met Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas. I said: "Did you hear of any virtue for Ali?" He replied: "I witnessed four for him, and having one of them would be dearer to me than the world, even if I were to live in it for as long as the lifespan of Noah (as): that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Abu Bakr with al-Bara'ah to the polytheists of Quraysh. He traveled with it for a day and a night, and then said to Ali: 'Follow Abu Bakr, take it, and deliver it.' So Ali followed Abu Bakr, reached him, took it, and delivered it, and returned Abu Bakr to me.' Abu Bakr returned and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, was something revealed regarding this?' He replied: 'No, but there is no one who will convey it from me except for me or a man from my family' - or he said: from my Ahlulbayt ....

- .... As for his insinuations: they are like sending Abu Bakr to recite Surah Bara'ah to the people in the mosque and then sending Ali after him to be the one who recites to them and delivers the message on his behalf. He said, "Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to me and said, 'A man from you," or he said, "from your people will convey it to him,'" which indicates his preference for Ali over him. And he was known to appoint Ali over Abu Bakr, Umar, and other companions in military expeditions, and he appointed Amr ibn al-As over them in one expedition and Usama ibn Zayd in another, but he never appointed anyone over Ali.
