22484 - Zayd ibn al-Habbab narrated to us, he said: al-Husayn ibn Waqid narrated to me, he said: Abdullah ibn Buraydah narrated to me from my father, Buraydah, who said: "We besieged Khaybar, and Abu Bakr took the flag and went out, but he returned without having conquered it. Then he took it the next day, went out again, and returned and was not able to conquer it." The people experienced difficulty and hardship that day. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Tomorrow I will hand the flag to a man whom Allah and His Messenger love, and who loves Allah and His Messenger. He will not return until he has conquered it." We spent the night with our hearts content that victory would come tomorrow. When the morning came, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) prayed the dawn prayer, then stood, called for the flag, and the people were in their rows. He called Ali, who was suffering from eye inflammation, and he `spat` in his eyes and handed him the flag, and he was able to conquer it." Buraydah said: "And I was among those who hoped to be part of it."

1009 - Abdullah narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us, from Zayd ibn al-Habbab, who said: al-Husayn ibn Waqqad narrated to me, from Abdullah ibn Buraydah, who said: I heard my father say: "We besieged Khaybar, and Abu Bakr took the banner and returned without having opened it." Then Umar took it the next day and went out, but he too returned without having opened it. The people faced hardship and difficulty that day, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "I will pass the banner tomorrow to a man whom Allah and His Messenger love, or who loves Allah and His Messenger, who will not return until it is opened for him." We went to bed with our hearts at ease that victory would come tomorrow. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) woke up, he prayed the morning prayer, then stood, calling for the banner while the people were in their ranks. He called Ali, who had sore eyes, and he (the Prophet) spat in his eyes and gave him the banner, and it was opened for him." Buraydah said: "And I was among those who stretched forward to see it."

10201 - And from Buraydah who said: "We besieged Khaybar, and Abu Bakr took the flag and went out, but it was not opened for him." When morning came, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) prayed the dawn prayer, then stood up, called for the flag, and the people were arranged in their rows. He called Ali, who had sore eyes, and he (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) spat in his eyes and gave him the flag, and it was opened for him. - Al-Bayhaqi said: Al-Hakam al-Asamm informed us, saying: Al-Attaradi informed us, from Yunus ibn Bakir, from al-Husayn ibn Waqid from Abdullah ibn Buraydah, who said: My father told me: On the day of Khaybar, Abu Bakr took the banner and returned, but it was not opened for him. And when the next day came, Umar took it and also returned, but it was not opened for him, and Mahmoud ibn Muslimah was killed, and the people turned back. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "I will surely give my banner tomorrow to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him; he will not return until Allah opens it for him." We spent the night with our hearts at ease, hoping that the victory would be tomorrow. So, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) prayed the morning prayer, then called for the banner and stood, and there was not a man among us who had a rank with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) except that he hoped to be that man, until I began to stretch myself for it and raised my head for a position I had with him. Then he called Ali ibn Abi Talib, who was complaining of his eyes. He (the Prophet) wiped them, then handed him the banner, and it was opened for him.

- .... And Yunus ibn Bakir said from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, and Buraydah ibn Sufyan ibn Furwah al-Aslami narrated to me from his father Sufyan from Salamah ibn Amr ibn al-Akwa' who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) with his flag, which was white according to what ibn Hisham said, to one of the fortresses of Khaybar. He fought there and returned without having achieved a conquest, although he had exerted himself. Then on the following day, he sent Umar ibn al-Khattab, who also fought and then returned without having achieved a conquest, although he too had exerted himself. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "I will give the flag tomorrow to a man who Allah and His Messenger love, and through whose hands Allah will grant victory. He is not one to turn back in flight." Salamah says: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), while he had sore eyes, and he breathed into them, saying: "Take this flag and march on with it until Allah grants you victory." Salamah says: He went out, by Allah, with it, stooping and jogging, and we were following behind him, tracking his steps, until he planted his flag in a mound of stones under the fortress. A Jewish man looked out at him from the top of the fortress and said: "Who are you?" He replied: "I am Ali ibn Abi Talib." The Jewish man said: "You have prevailed over us and over what was revealed to Moses," or something to that effect. Salamah said he did not return until Allah had granted victory at his hands ....

1379 - Ubaydullah ibn Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us from Awf, from Maymun Abu Abdullah, from Abdullah ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) descended at the fortress of Khaybar, the people of the fortress were agitated, some among them in confusion and fear. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "When we descend in the courtyard of a people, evil will befall the morning of those who are warned." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Tomorrow, I will give the standard to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him." When the next day came, Abu Bakr and Umar rushed to take it. He called Ali, who had sore eyes, and he spat into his eyes and gave him the banner. Ali then shook it at the people and encountered Marhab, who was saying:
"Know that Khaybar is mine, I am Marhab,
Wielding my weapon, a proven hero.
When the lions charge, fierce and ablaze,
I strike sometimes, and at times, I am struck."
Ali met him, and they exchanged two blows. Ali struck him on the head with a blow that the people in the army heard, and he bit his sword to the ground. He said, "The last of the people did not arrive until Allah granted victory to the first of them."

36879 - Hudhah ibn Khalifah narrated to us, who said: 'Uf narrated to us, from Maymun Abu Abdullah, from Abdullah ibn Buraydah al-Ansari al-Aslami, from his father, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) camped at the outskirts of Khaybar, the people of Khaybar were alarmed and said: "Muhammad has come with the people of Yathrib." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Umar ibn al-Khattab with the people, and he encountered the people of Khaybar, but they drove him back and overwhelmed him, he and his companions. They returned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who was disheartening his companions and they were disheartening him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Tomorrow, I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him." So when the next day came, Abu Bakr and Umar both vied for it. Then he called Ali, who was then suffering from eye irritation. He (the Prophet) spitted in his eye and gave him the banner. Ali set out with the people and encountered the people of Khaybar and Marhab al-Khaybari, who was reciting verses and saying:
"Khaybar knows that I am Marhab,
A wielder of weapons, a proven warrior.
When the lions approach, fierce and blazing,
I strike sometimes and occasionally thrust."
Then he and Ali met, and Ali struck him a blow on his helmet with his sword, causing the sword to bite through to the gums. The sound of his strike was heard by the people in the camp. The last of the people did not finish arriving until the first of them was granted victory.

36388 - Narrated from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said: Ali used to go out in winter wearing an izar (wrap) and a mantle of two light garments, and in summer in a stuffed qabaa (cloak) and a heavy robe. So the people said to Abd al-Rahman: "Would you not speak to your father, for he would stay up late with him?" So I asked my father and said: "The people have seen something from the Commander of the Faithful that they found strange." He said: "And what is that?" I said: "He goes out in the intense heat wearing a stuffed qabaa and a heavy robe, not minding it, and he goes out in the intense cold in two light garments and a shawl, not minding it, and does not protect himself from the cold. Did you hear anything about this?" He said: "They commanded me to ask you to inquire if you stay up late with him." So I stayed up late with him and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, the people have noticed something from you." He said: "And what is it?" I said: "You go out in the intense heat wearing a stuffed qabaa and a heavy robe, and you go out in the intense cold in two light garments and a shawl, not minding it, and not protecting yourself from the cold." He said: "Were you not with us, O Abi Layla, at Khaybar?" I replied: "Yes, by Allah, I was with you." He said: "Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Abu Bakr, and he led the people, but they were defeated and returned to him. He then sent Umar, and he led the people, but they were also defeated until they reached him." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: 'I will give the standard to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him. Allah will grant him victory, and he will not be fleeing.'" So he sent for me and called me, and I went to him, blind in one eye and unable to see anything. He then spat in my eye and said: "O Allah, protect him from heat and cold." After that, neither heat nor cold harmed me.
