Abu Bakr laments himself

Hadith No: 1
Al-Bayhaqi - Sha'b al-Iman - 11: Fear of Allah, the Exalted
Section: Al-Halimi, may Allah have mercy on him, said: People may find fear in themselves of many things.

767 - Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Ismat ibn Ibrahim al-Adl narrated to us, from my father, who said: Yahya ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Sufyan ibn Uyayna narrated to us from a man from al-Hasan, who said: Abu Bakr saw a bird on a tree and said: "Blessed are you, O bird, eating dates and perching on trees. I wish I were a date that the birds could peck."

768 - He said: Yahya ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Abu Mu'awiya narrated to us, from Juwaybir from al-Dahhak, who said: Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by a bird that had landed on a tree and said: "Blessed are you, O bird, that you can fly and land on trees, then eat from the fruits, and fly again, with no حساب (accountability) or عذاب (punishment) upon you. I wish I were like you!" By Allah, I would prefer to be a tree beside the road, so that a camel might pass by, take me, and come to its mouth, swallow me, and then regurgitate me, leaving me in lumps, not as a human being." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I wish I were a ram among my family, whom they would fatten as it pleased them, until I was as fat as could be. Then, some of those they loved would visit them, and they would slaughter me for them, making some of me roasted and some dried, then eat me, and I would not be a human being." Al-Bukhari also narrated that Abu al-Darda said: "I wish I were a tree, supported and whose fruits were eaten, and not a human being."

769 - Abu Nasr ibn Qutayda narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Ayyub al-Sabghi narrated to us, saying: Sahl ibn Ammar narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah ibn Musa narrated to us, saying: Musa ibn Ubaydah narrated to us, from Yaqub ibn Zayd and Umar ibn Abdullah, the freedman of Gufrah, who said: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at a bird when it landed on a tree and said: "How blissful you are, O bird! You eat and drink without accountability upon you. I wish I were like you."

449 - Abu Muawiya narrated to us, from Juwaybir from al-Dhahak, who said: Abu Bakr passed by a bird perched on a tree and said: "Blessed are you, O bird, that you can land on the tree, eat the fruit, and then fly away, with no account or punishment upon you. I wish I were like you! By Allah, I would prefer that Allah had created me a tree by the roadside, so that a passing camel might take me, put me in its mouth, crunch me, then swallow me, and finally spit me out in a heap, without me having been human." Umar also said, "I wish I were a ram in my flock, whom they would fatten as they pleased, until I was the fattest I could be. Then, when some of what they love visits them, they would make some of me roast and some of me dried meat, and then eat me, expelling me as dung, without me having been human." Abu al-Darda also said, "I wish I were a tree being supported, not having been human."

34432 - Abu Muawiya from Juwaybir from al-Dahhak, who said: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq saw a bird perched on a tree and said: "Blessed are you, O bird! By Allah, I wish I were like you, landing on the tree, eating from the fruits, then flying away, with no accounting or punishment upon you. By Allah, I wish I were a tree by the side of the road, a camel passing by me, taking me, and bringing me into its mouth, swallowing me, then regurgitating me, and I would not be a human."

"Blessed are you, O bird, how fortunate you are on this tree, eating from this fruit, then dying, and then being nothing."

9 - Ishaq ibn Isma'il and Khalaf ibn Salim both said: Abdullah ibn Numayr narrated to us, and Abdullah ibn Muslim narrated to us from Muhammad ibn Ata ibn Khabbab, from his father, from his grandfather Khabbab, that Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him) was in his home when a bird came to him and landed on a tree, either a dove or a sparrow. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him) looked at it and said: "Blessed are you, O bird, how wonderfully you are cared for on this tree, eating from this fruit, then dying, and then being nothing. I wish I were in your place."

No reckoning is upon you, nor any punishment. I wish I were like you."

It sighed deeply and then said: "Blessed are you, O bird, that eats from the fruits, basks in the shade of the trees, and returns to no reckoning. Would that Abu Bakr were like you."

125 - Muhammad ibn Ubayd ibn Musa narrated to me, saying: Zayd ibn al-Habab narrated to us from Musa ibn Ubayda, who was informed by Umar ibn Abdullah, a client of Ghufra, that Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may he be pleased with him) saw a bird flying and landing on a tree. He said: "O bird, how blissful you are, with no reckoning upon you and no punishment! Oh, that I were like you! If only it were so."

35699 - From al-Duhhak who said: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq saw a bird perched on a tree and said, "Blessed are you, O bird! By Allah, I wish I were like you, able to land on trees, eat from fruits, then fly away without any reckoning or punishment. By Allah, I wish I were a tree by the roadside, over which a camel passes, takes me, and puts me in its mouth, then chews me, swallows me, and finally spits me out, all while I am not a human."
35700 - From Abu Bakr al-Siddiq who said: "I wish I were a hair on the side of a believing servant."

35701 - Narrated from Mu'adh ibn Jabal who said:Abu Bakr entered a garden and saw a doves-like bird in the shade of a tree. He sighed deeply and then said, "Blessed are you, O bird, that eats from the trees, finds shade in the trees, and goes on without any account. I wish Abu Bakr were like you."
35702 - Narrated from Qatadah who said:I have been informed that Abu Bakr said, "I wish I were a green plant that animals could eat."
35703 - Narrated from al-Duhhak ibn Muzahem who said:Abu Bakr al-Siddiq said while looking at a small bird: "Blessed are you, O small bird, that eats from the fruits and flies among the trees. You have no accounting over you, nor punishment. By Allah, I wish I were a ram that my family could fatten. Then, when I was the largest and fattest I could be, they would slaughter me and make some of me roasted meat and some dried meat, then eat me and throw me out as droppings in the yard, and that I had never been created as a human."
