6594 - Abu Khalaifah narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn al-Madini narrated to us, saying: Abu Dawood narrated to us, saying: Faliih ibn Sulayman narrated to us, saying: Salim Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, from Basar ibn Sa'id and Ubayd ibn Hunayn, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) delivered a sermon and said: "Indeed, Allah offered a servant the choice between granting him whatever he wished of the adornments of this world and meeting Him, and he chose to meet his Lord." Abu Bakr wept and said, "Rather, we would ransom you with our fathers and sons."
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied, "Silence, O Abu Bakr." Then he said, "The most trustworthy of people in regard to me in his companionship and wealth is Abu Bakr. If I were to take a close friend from among the people, I would have taken Abu Bakr. However, the bond of Islam and affection is sufficient. Let there be no one left in the mosque with an open door except that it be closed, except for the door of Abu Bakr." Abu Sa'id said: I was astonished that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was informing us that a servant was given the choice by Allah between this world and the Hereafter, and this one is weeping, while the one given the choice is the Messenger of Allah, and the weeper is Abu Bakr. And Abu Bakr is informing us with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) of a matter that might mislead those who are not well-versed in the field of knowledge into thinking that the Chosen One (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was, in the appearance he described, giving a sign to the people by praying over the martyrs of Uhud before the sermon he mentioned.
