Omar was the last to leave drinking wine

Hadith No: 1

Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab:

When the prohibition of wine was declared, Umar said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine.

So the following verse of Surah al-Baqarah revealed (verse 219); "They ask you concerning wine and gambling. Say: In them is a great sin." Umar was then called and it was recited to him.

He said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine.

Then the following verse of Surah al-Nisaa' (verse 43) was revealed: "O you who believe! Do not go near prayers when you are intoxicated until you know what you say." Thereafter the herald of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) would call when the (congregational) prayer was performed: Beware, one who is drunk should not come for prayer. Umar was again called and the verse was recited for him.

He said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. This verse was revealed (Surah Maaedah: verse 91): "Will you not then abstain?" Umar said: We abstained.
