492 - Muawiyah ibn Amr narrated to us, saying: Zaa'idah narrated to us, from Asim, from Shaqiq, who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf met al-Walid ibn Uqbah and al-Walid said to him: "What is it with you that I see you have been distant with the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman (ra)?" Abd al-Rahman replied to him: "Tell him that I did not flee on the day of Ainain." Asim said, he meant the day of Uhud, "and I did not lag behind on the day of Badr, nor did I abandon the Sunnah of Umar (ra)." So al-Walid went and informed Uthman (ra) of this. Uthman (ra) then said: "As for his statement, 'I did not flee on the day of Ainain,' how can he reproach me with a sin from which Allah has forgiven?" He then recited: {Indeed, those who turned away among you on the day when the two armies met were caused to stumble by Satan because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155). "And as for his claim that I lagged behind on the day of Badr, I was indeed nursing Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), when she died, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had assigned me a share. Whoever the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) assigned a share to has witnessed it. And as for his statement that I did not leave the Sunnah of Umar (ra), I cannot bear it, nor can he." So he went to him and told him this.

5738 - Athan narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Awaneq narrated to us, saying: Uthman ibn Abdullah ibn Muhaib narrated, who said: A man came from Egypt to perform Hajj of the Kaaba. He saw some people sitting and asked, "Who are these people?" They said, "Quraysh." He then asked, "Who is the elder among them?" They replied, "Abdullah ibn Umar." He said, "O son of Umar, I am going to ask you something, or request something from you, or challenge you, by the sanctity of this House." "Do you know that Uthman fled on the day of Uhud?" He said, "Yes." The man continued, "Do you know that he was absent from Badr and did not witness it?" He said, "Yes." The man asked, "And do you know that he was absent from the Pledge of Ridwan?" He said, "Yes." Then the Egyptian exclaimed, and Ibn Umar said: "Come, I will explain to you what you asked me about. As for his fleeing on the day of Uhud, bear witness that Allah has forgiven and pardoned him." Regarding his absence from Badr, he was married to the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and she was ill. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him, "You have the reward of a man who witnessed Badr and his share." As for his absence from the Pledge of Ridwan, if there had been anyone more esteemed in the heart of Makkah than Uthman, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would have sent him. The Pledge of Ridwan took place after Uthman had departed, and he (the Prophet) struck his hand upon his own hand and said, "This is for Uthman." Ibn Umar also said, "Take this now with you."

737 - Abdullah narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to me, saying: Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, saying: Abu Mu'awiya, meaning Shayban, narrated to us from Uthman ibn Abdullah, who said: A man came from Egypt who had performed the pilgrimage to the House and saw a group of people sitting. He said: Who are these? They said: These are the Quraysh. He said: Who is the elder among them? They said: Ibn Umar. So he went to him and said: O Ibn Umar, if I ask you about something, will you inform me? He said: Yes. He said: I urge you by the sanctity of this House to tell me if you know that Uthman fled on the day of Uhud. He said: Yes. He said: Do you know that he was absent from Badr and did not witness it? He said: Yes. He said: Do you understand that he was also absent from the Pledge of Ridwan and did not witness it? He said: Yes. Then he exclaimed. Ibn Umar said to him: Come, let me tell you and clarify what you asked me about: As for his fleeing on the day of Uhud, I bear witness that Allah has forgiven him and granted him mercy. As for his absence from Badr, it was because he had the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) under his care, and she was ill. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him: "You will have the reward of a man who witnessed Badr, and its share is yours." As for his absence from the Pledge of Ridwan, if there had been anyone more honored in the heart of Mecca than Uthman, he would have sent him. Instead, he sent Uthman. The Pledge of Ridwan took place after Uthman had gone to Mecca. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) raised his right hand and said: "This is the hand of Uthman," and he struck it with his other hand, saying: "This is for Uthman." Ibn Umar said to him: "Take these three with you."

826 - Ibrahim narrated to us, who said: Hajjaj narrated to us, who said: Abu 'Awaneq narrated to us from Uthman ibn Abdullah ibn Muhaib, who said: A man from the people of Egypt came to perform Hajj of the House and saw a group of people sitting. He asked: Who are these people? They said: They are Quraysh. He then asked: Who is the elder among them? They said: Abdullah ibn Umar. He said: So he went to ibn Umar and said, "O ibn Umar, I want to ask you about something." Then he said, "I beseech you by Allah in the sacredness of this House, do you know that Uthman fled on the Day of Uhud?" He replied: "Yes." He continued: "Do you know that Uthman was absent from Badr and did not attend it?" He said: "Yes. Do you know that Uthman was absent from the Pledge of Ridwan and did not witness it?" He said: "Yes." Then he exclaimed: "Allahu Akbar." Ibn Umar said: "Come, I will clarify for you everything you asked me about: As for his fleeing on the Day of Uhud, bear witness that Allah has certainly forgiven and pardoned him." Regarding his absence from Badr, it was because he was married to the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who was ill. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him: 'You will have the reward of a man who witnessed Badr and his share.'" As for his absence from the Pledge of Ridwan, it was that if there had been anyone more honored in the valley of Mecca than Uthman, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would have sent him in his place. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Uthman to Mecca, and he said with his right hand: "This is the hand of Uthman," and he struck it over his (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) hand, saying: "This is for Uthman." Ibn Umar said to the man: "Take this understanding with you now."
