- .... Ahmad and Ibn Mundhir narrated from Shaqiq who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf met al-Walid ibn Uqbah, and al-Walid said to him: "What is it with you that I see you being aloof with the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman?" Abd al-Rahman replied to him, "Tell him that I did not flee on the Day of Ain Ein," referring to the Day of Uhud, "nor did I neglect to attend Badr, nor have I abandoned a practice of Umar." So al-Walid went and informed Uthman of this, who said: "As for his statement that I did not flee on the Day of Ain Ein, how can he hold that against me when Allah has forgiven me?" He then recited: {Indeed, those who turned away among you on the day when the two armies met were only enticed by Satan with some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly forgiven them. Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Al-Imran 3:155). "And as for his statement that I neglected to attend Badr, I was indeed caring for Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), until she died, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had earmarked a share for me. Whoever the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) earmarked a share for has witnessed [the event]. And regarding his statement that I did not abandon a practice of Umar, I cannot bear it, nor can he." And he informed him of this.
