- .... Al-Bukhari said: Abdān narrated to us, saying: Abu Hamza narrated to us from 'Uthman ibn Muhbib, who said: A man came to perform Hajj at the Sacred House and saw some people sitting. He said: Who are these seated ones? He was told: These are the Quraysh. He asked: Who is the elder? They replied: Ibn 'Umar. So he went to him and said: I want to ask you about something. Will you talk to me? He replied: I invoke you by the sanctity of this House, do you know that 'Uthman ibn 'Affan fled on the day of Uhud? He said: Yes. The man continued: Do you know that he was absent from Badr and did not witness it? He said: Yes. The man asked: Do you know that he postponed the Pledge of Ridwan and did not witness it? He said: Yes. Then he exclaimed: Ibn 'Umar said: Come, let me tell you and clarify to you about what you asked me: As for his fleeing on the day of Uhud, bear witness that Allah forgave him.....

- .... Al-Bukhari also narrated it in another place, as did Al-Tirmidhi, from the hadith of Abu 'Awaneh, from Uthman ibn Abdullah ibn Muhaqqiq, with the same wording. Al-Umawi said in his account of the battles from Ibn Ishaq: Yahya ibn Ubadah narrated to me from his father, from his grandfather: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say, while people had fled from him until some reached the place of refuge beyond al-Aws, and Uthman ibn Affan had escaped, and Sa'd ibn Uthman, a man from the Ansar, until they reached Jal'ab Mountain, an area near Medina overlooking al-Aws. They stayed there for three days and then returned. It was claimed that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to them: "You have missed a great opportunity," and the point is that some events similar to those that occurred in Badr took place in Uhud.

- .... Imam Ahmad said: Mu'awiya ibn Amr narrated to us, saying: Zaidah narrated to us from Asim from Sufyan, who said: Abdul Rahman ibn Awf met al-Walid ibn Uqbah, and al-Walid said to him: "What is it with you that I see you have become distant from the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman?" Abdul Rahman replied: "Let him know that I did not flee on the Day of Hunayn." Asim said: He means the Day of Uhud, "and I did not fall behind on the Day of Badr, nor did I abandon the Sunnah of Umar." So al-Walid went and informed Uthman of this, and Uthman said: "As for his statement, 'I did not flee on the Day of Hunayn,' how can he hold that against me when Allah has forgiven me?" He then recited: {Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day when the two armies met were stopped by Satan for some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155).

- .... Ibn Umar said: Come, I will tell you and clarify to you about what you asked me. As for his fleeing on the day of Uhud, bear witness that Allah forgave him, and as for his absence from Badr, it was because he was taking care of the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) daughter, who was ill. And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him: You will have the reward of a man who witnessed Badr and his share. As for his absence from the Pledge of Ridwan, if there had been anyone more honored in the Valley of Mecca than Uthman ibn Affan, he would have sent him in his place, but he sent Uthman. The Pledge of Ridwan took place after Uthman went to Mecca, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) raised his right hand and said: This is the hand of Uthman, and he struck it with his hand, saying: This is for Uthman.
