8104 - Ibn Humayd said: Salamah reported from Ibn Ishaq, his statement: {Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met were caused to stumble by Satan because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly pardoned them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing (Al-Imran 3:155)}. And those whom Satan caused to stumble included Uthman ibn Affan, and Sa'd ibn Uthman, and 'Uqbah ibn Uthman, the two Ansaris, and then the two from the Banu al-Zurqah. As for his statement: {And Allah had certainly pardoned them (Al-Imran 3:155)}, its meaning is: And Allah had certainly overlooked those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met, allowing them not to be punished for their turning away from their enemy.

- .... Abu Ja'far said: And the people had indeed scattered in defeat from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) until some of them reached the outcrop before the Uhud and Uthman ibn Affan managed to escape, as did Uqbah ibn Uthman and Sa'd ibn Uthman, two men from the Ansar, until they reached the Jal'ab, a mountain in the vicinity of Madinah facing Uhud. They stayed there for three days before returning to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). They claimed that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to them: You have indeed missed a great opportunity.
